I originally posted this question last December and didn't get much of a response. So, maybe this thread is a better place to post this question:
<< <i>.... Why is it that so many Morgans have a broken 4th star and always the same point (i.e. leftmost horizontal starpoint on the 4th right obverse star). I expect there must be a technical reason having to do with coin design and die strike/wear/pressure. Having just gotten into VAMs I've found the broken 4th star to be a very common trait of many VAM Morgans.
Thanks!
Edited for clarification: For perspective, the orientation of the star with respect to the rim; If the downward point of the star is at the very bottom nearest the rim, then the leftmost horizontal star * is the broken one. And not just on any single date or mint but on many in the series although maybe more prevalent on some dates. >>

I am a neophite at this VAM thing, but I am learning. The first place to "find" 'em is within your existing collection. I've found several, but here are two real cherries that I discovered recently:
1891-O VAM 1B - Pitted Reverse, URS-4, R-7 equivalent, (Raw), XF to borderline AU? 1926-S VAM 4 - Dot or Extra Berry variety, URS-8, R-4 equivalent, (Raw), AU?

Here's a few goodies that I picked up in Baltimore: 1878 V-30 (raw AU) 1878 V-33 (NGC MS63 unattributed) 1878 V-81 (raw, low MS) 1878 V-220 (raw XF) 1880O V-21 (raw MS63) 1880S V-8 (raw MS63+) 1880S V-11 (raw MS64+) 1880S V-12 (PCGS MS64 and a NGC MS66 PL) 1885 V-22(raw MS63+) 1887O V-11A (raw MS63) 1899O V-6 (raw AU) 1901O V-1A (raw dbl clashed, not the super CD in MS63) 1904O V4-B (ANACS MS63 unattributed) Also one 78, a couple of 81O's and (3) 02O's that I haven't attributed
Going through a box that I had back in Ca and never attributed......whole bunch of goodies in this one.

This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
I found and placed a bid on 2 VAMS at a local B&M that has a bid board. I was the only bidder and won both for the opening bid. One was a nice BU 21-D VAM 1-AH (Die Break 1st S in STATES to RIM, Scribbling Die Scratches) with crackled orange-red toning on the reverse and the other was a BU 22-D VAM-17A (Doubled IN GO, Die Break Below N, Die Scratch Wing). The 17A was realy wierd looking because of the pitting from the rusted die. It looked like a whizzed coin or like it somehow had artificial luster because of the totally pitted surface. I took some pictures of the 17A, but because of the wierd surface I ended up having to use diffused light. I'm still not satisfied with the pictures, but here is what I came up with:
Edited to add new pictures. Do you like these pics better? I redid the obverse and reverse (but not the enlarged cutout) by using direct light and slightly tilting the coin to gut down on the wierd luster glare.
As a neophyte "VAM enthusiast" this thread is much more useful with pics, close-up pics, and a brief, if only very brief description of the VAM attributes. I recognize this is a very specialized pursuit in coin collecting. I've purchased the Cherry's Pickers Guide, 4th edition and I am constantly looking at vamworld.com for clues. But for those experts out there who just post date/mm/vam #/price to this thread, it doesn't really help us newcomers. I realize you all want to score "rips" and that's probably about 2/3rds of those who post and I congratulate you all. But your own holdings won't increase in value without renewed interest from neophytes like me. So howzabout making this thread a little more educational (like MrSpud's pix and descriptions in the previous post for example)? And a little lest drab, with nothing but the date/mm/vam#/price paid in your posts?
And if this isn't the educational thread that I'm looking for, then howzabout pointing me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Here's a die-cracked-up '23-D image. I couldn't find a VAM attribution, but I suppose it's because die cracks don't count for VAMs unless there's something else unique about them like MrSpud's 22-D DDO "IN GO". Fact is I think MrSpuds all cracked up '22-D is much more intriguing w/o the DDO "IN GO" that I can't make out in those images anyways. At least the diecracks standout!
Sorry for the crappy image! And thanks for hearing my pleas.

Yeah, if I didn't read about it at Vamworld.com I wouldn't have noticed it, reminds me more of machine doubling with the G being the most visible on the bottom left of the round part of the G. In hand, under a microscope it doesn't show up much better, but it also doesn't show up better on the pictures at Vamworld.com Vamworld Link . The cracks, the pitted surface from the rusted die along with the little bitty die crack underneath IN are much more noticable on this one.
As for people just putting up the dates and Vam numbers, I think the hardcore VAMmers find so many they don't have the time to put up pictures of all of them. I'm just a little bit into them so each one I find is still a big deal to me. Vamworld.com is the best educational site, but I find it more useful to ID coins with than actually being able to read it and retain much. I just keep an eye out for die breaks or anything unusual then look it up at Vamworld and try and attribute them.
What you seek is on the VAMWorld discussion pages and supporting pages of Morgan and Peace dollars. This thread is to list latest acquisitions and garner the infamous "YOU SUCK" award. It takes time and effort to post up pics. Posters sometimes include a pic of a truly outstanding find to "validate" their claim, but that's the exception rather than the rule. In-depth discussions of vams including pictures are scattered in the threads and usually focus on a single coin or VAM. Do a search for "vam" and they will appear. Conversely, if a coin is posted on the VAMWorld discussion page without a picture, the poster is advised to include a picture if they want assistance.
If you see something here that piques your interest, go ahead and ask the poster to include a pic. They may or may not accommodate your request.

I just brought home an AU 1921-S VAM-1B4A Thornhead. I picked it up from the Bid Board at the local B&M. It is raw and was unattributed and I was the only bidder. I thought it was just going to be the 1B6 until I brought it home and looked at it closer and then compared it to the pictures at Vamworld. I'll probably post pictures of it in a separate thread when I get a chance.
