There are two fundamental flaws in your understanding:
The CAC is really not going after the $500 coin market.
Collectors are already paying a premium for nicer coins. Some of these coins are not really nice, however, but are being sold as nice coins to collectors who do not know better.
With the benefit of hindsight, it seems that market came to them.
It is interesting to see the positions back then. I had left the forum/hobby about a year before CAC was formally announced. So my memories are all about the speculation and intrigue about who was involved, the “in” club of who knew what was happening, and the statements that it was going to be like a consumer watchdog. The latter certainly didn’t come about as a primary goal.

It’s like the first CAC thread like... ever!
This was before I even joined.
There were earlier ones. They were referred to as the coin posse before CAC became a thing. For some old reading, and similar arguments even earlier in 2005...
And the earliest I could find on the Coin Posse (that would end up becoming CAC) in 2003. I have to say that CAC became something quite a bit different from what was posited/hinted at in the coin posse days. It was positioned to be altruistic at first, which obviously didn't end up happening.

On a side note, it's interesting that most of my opinions from back then are the same ones I would have now...
The “Coin Posse” referenced in some of your above linked threads was not the precursor to CAC. It became Numismatic Consumer Alliance, a not-for-profit company. “The organization has dedicated its resources and activities to the education and protection of the coin consumer.” See link below.

Thanks for extra info. I remember people blending the two together as some of the threads showed. Still, interesting to read it all again. A lot of the same discussions and issues now as then.

<< <i>Cool. The discussion has degenerated to beer induced fantasy. >>
Which is still a substantial improvement over previous discussions on this topic. >>
True. Except my beer induced fantasies are quite the improvement over ANYTHING on this site!

Wow.... thirteen years ago.... Interesting to look at thoughts/opinions from that time and compare it to reality today. Cheers, RickO
