Ahhh yes! Workclothing, glad to finally see you on here! You have almost twice the number of cards than I do in your Master Set! I've enjoyed watching your sets grow. Do you have a certain set that you're trying to build, or are you just getting anything you can to fill all of your sets? When you get a chance, I would love to see some oddball scans from your Master Set, especially the hand-cut program cards! Welcome!

So who just won the 90 Topps that closed earlier today?
  • i am just buying anything to fill my cal set,i am at work now ,so i can not show any scan right now, the 90 topps i didnt get
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
Wasn't me either, but I'm so mad at myself for letting the 1994 Topps PSA 10 go for less than $10! I still need that card in 10. I set my cell phone alarm to go off 15 minutes before the auction's end, but later that day we decided to go see a movie, and I was in the middle of it when it went off. I mean it's a pop 20, so it shouldn't be too hard to get, but that's a big one for me. Kicking myself...
  • I picked up a 90 Topps, but it wasn't the one that just closed. How much did that one go for?

  • I had the 90 Topps on my watch list but it was at $50 when I woke up yesterday so I gave up on that idea.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
I tossed about $75 on it just to see what would happen... yeah... started looking at 1990 Topps cases.

Well they finally got around to adding my cards to the Master Set composite... looks like they did quite a few others too! The number of items last Monday was 2,364, now it's at 2,440! Still a lot more to add though!
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
WOW, that's a ton! I'll have to go check it out later.

For $130k, the lack of photos, and only 5 feedback rating, I would definitely have to see it beforehand!!

    What a ugly 10
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I noticed that one. I hope they're that forgiving for me when they grade the Ripkens I sent in under the April Special! I sent in a 1991 Woolworth. I didn't send in the 1990 because they don't have it listed in the B&C Issues Set.

I find it weird when they have one year of a set, but not another. for example, the 1990 Woolworth, and the 1985 Drake's. There are more, but I don't feel like going down the list at the moment! lol

Should start submitting those to the B&C composite then! As far as that 1990 Woolworth it really pisses me off when I see cards like that. I have one and it was a pop 2 at the time, looks way nicer than that piece of crap on eBay right now. One of the reasons I rarely buy from the bulk submitters/sellers.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
I did submit the 1985 Drake's card to the customer service. I only submit cards that I own.

Another screw up I noticed in the B&C Set, if you try to add a 1990 K-Mart card, it puts it into the 1990 Fleer MVP slot. If you notice, the 1990 K-Mart card doesn't have a Spec Number. I notified PSA of this mistake, but it does take them a while to fix problems like this.

Rumor around the camp is that they have stopped grading the Kraft pop up cards? I see there is one in the Ripken Master Set.
Why on earth can we not get the properties from the images on set registry?

Where did you hear that from? Any reason why they would stop grading them?
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭
A griffey collector told me ,Cnote on here. His was yanked from the Griffey master set.
I have no idea why they would stop grading them other then the fact they are thicker then the avg. card.

Very strange, maybe I will have to submit one to see. Or easier, send them an email image With the way they are taking away cards that they grade and taking half a year to add cards to the composite, I'm considering moving to SGC for my registry.
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭
Ripken doesn't have a set at SGC. You could always start your own in their my registry like I did.

Yeah I know, but it seems like SGC is a little more on the ball at adding things!
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
That's because SGC is a fraction of the size of PSA, and if you try to sell the same card with the same grade (one in PSA and one in SGC), PSA will sell higher every time. I'll never change. image

So I was looking through the Ripken Basic PSA set today, and thought it was odd that they include the 80's Leaf cards, but do not include the OPC. Doesn't it seem like if one is included, both should be?
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭
I would think the OPC should be included.
Got this in the mail today and I am stoked!

Finally had some time to scan today... so here's a few of my favorites:

1998 Select 5 Star Bonus, #'d to 50, I have a few of these image
    imageimage

1998 Upper Deck Retro Quantum Leap, tough card to find, would like to pick one up that's a bit nicer than this one though.
    imageimage

2001 Oakland A's Ripken Farewell SGA. I had #1 of this too but it was creased in half when I got it. I thought I kept it in my junk Ripken pile but I couldn't find it.
    imageimage

2001 Topps Employee. Hard to see the logo on the non shiny cards, but it's there. Easier to see on #387

Thanks, I probably overpaid for it, and it came with a couple touched corners. But oh well, it had been years since I had seen one! Never say never, you will get one someday image

Well, finally I've been bumped down to second place in the Basic Set, but oddly enough NOT by Michael Wynne. The new leader is a NEW set named "BL's Cal Ripken Jr. Basic Set". Their history shows they started plugging in cards on 4/30/09, and took the top spot today.

Here's what annoys me... why start/own a set on the registry, and NOT make it visible for others?? Why bother?

Anyway, I'm glad for the bump. This will motivate me to upgrade! image

Some people are worried about having competitors drive them up on cards they need if they open their sets.

Really? Man, people must be bored I guess.
  • I agree, I hate the hidden set and any theory around it. I'm an open set guy with pics if possible. Speaking of pics, I have a whole lot of cards I need to scan and upload. I just need a free weekend!

I emailed the owner of the "BL's Cal Ripken Jr. Basic Set", and Nick was right, he has it non-viewable to avoid potential shill bidding, or other set owners from bidding up the cards he needs. I can't say I blame him. It's just a shame it has to be that way. He seems pretty cool, and I let him know about this thread. He said he's been collecting graded Ripken cards for about 5 years, and he wanted to wait to post this set until he was about done with it. I hope he comes to this thread and shares some of this experiences and input!
  • Hey guys, just wanted to let you know we are having a sale on our Cal Ripken Jr cards with most cards starting at $5.99 and low buy it nows

I annouced something I was working a deal out on, didn't happen how I wanted to, but I still got it...not a card, but a very tough redemption item...it should be here soon...

    image

I don't have a copy of the redemption card itself, but it would have looked a lot like this:

So we're probably gonna hit 500 posts today sometime. Anyone wanna reflect on the past year of this thread?

I know that for a few months it was just me and Jeff keeping this thing going. Now I look and see new posters all the time. Also I'm glad to see we could pick up where the Nolan Ryan thread kinda died off, and paved the way for a lot of other player threads on the boards. I've seen posts from most of the collectors at the top of all the registries, definitely been a pleasure getting feedback from everyone as well as conducting business with some of you. Hope to see this thread reach 1000 one day, or even 2632...

It really has been nice to be able to swap stories and information on this thread. It's been two years since I started it, just because I was adding a large group of cards to my collection. Pretty cool to look back on it!

Speaking of which, I just had some Ripken poppage yesterday! There's good, bad, and ugly, but most of it was just filler anyway:
