STOP THE GROUP VINTAGE RIPS- Suspicious Activity

lawnmowerman beat me to the punch in the 1984 Topps thread, but I feel this whole thing needs its own thread.

As we all know, 80sJunkie, aka Gary Daggett, has been handling all of the latest group vintage rips that have become so popular. It is suspected that his ebay id is "fmemech", a person who has recently purchased many vintage wrappers and singles lots, and has several negative feedbacks, some of which accuse them of resealing packs/boxes. Here are recent purchases: LINK

Now, I did a little more digging and found that "Stephanie's Cards" is located in Clovis, CA through ebay's "Member COntact Info" feature. I also found that there are 10 Gary Daggett's listed in the white pages in the country, one of which resides in Clovis, CA. The odds of one out of 10 random people living in a random city are roughly 2000/1, meaning it is truly unlikely that this is a coincidence.

Furthermore, Gary was fairly insistent on handling the shipping himself in a previous thread, rather than let Steve Hart at the BBCE do it directly from his warehouse- another red flag.

If it's true that he came on these boards and took advantage of people who collect for the love of collecting, than it's truly one of the most dispicable things I've ever seen in my life. If it's not true and Gary can prove his innocence, then I jumped the gun I'm the a-hole. I can live with that. I can't live with more fellow colelctors being ripped off when I had the chance to do something about it.

I wonder if Gary ever completed that bar top he wanted all those 75 wrappers for at the end of the 75 mini case break.

Damn, and I sent him $$ for my share of the '78 case break.

All I have to say is I better be getting my cards.

2deuces- Post whatever you think will shed any light on this situation.

I'm really sick to my stomach.

It also needs to be said that anything bought from Steve Hart that passed through Gary to us cannot be said with any degree of certainty that its condition was the same as when it left the BBCExchange. This includes the water-damaged 85 Topps FB box that Steve gave Gary a full refund on.

Must be why I got 1 star in the entire 77-up baseball break.
    This sucks.
    I hope it's not true.

i'll give him the benefit of a doubt, maybe he'll show us pictures of his bar covered in wrappers or something.. if he doesnt at least come on here to respond to the accusations, well, then obviously something is wrong.. but i dont think he'll want his name and reputation to be garbage, so i think he'll explain..

Didn't he have something to do with the shipping of the 1975 Topps Mini break? (which I was a part of)

i agree with pandrews yet feel like cdsnuts (sick to my stomach)...i had suspicions like others. i'm glad to see this thread and hopefully gary will explain. my suspicion grew when steve offered to ship the boxes....and then i felt resistence from gary's repsonses. if it's true...what a sad day.

i'm curious to see how the bkb bust ends up as far what is pulled.

    Thanks,

  • I sincerely hope that this is all a misunderstanding. Also, let's try to not allow this to become mob mentality in the near future. At least until we hear from him and get a second side to the story.

This would really be a shame though. You think you know someone, you know? What's next -- lawnmowerman actually collects Barry Sanders cards?

From where I stand, it doesn't seem like there's anyway he could get enough inventory to switch out everything for resealed stuff. If he was resealing Steve Hart's boxes himself, I doubt he's stupid enough to pull out all of the stars for fear of people becoming suspicious. So at least some of the stuff is probably legit if he was in fact scamming the board members.

Just to let everyone know. Gary's buying habits came to light recently but the hobby
was waiting to ask these questions after everyone received their 78 BKTBALL. It was
time to ask these questions before anymore rips.

I'm not a long-standing or well known member, but the silence is deafening. The odds of the cards that weren't pulled just didn't add up at all.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
    Arthur,
Personally, I don't have any specific evidence that the user id is connected, other than the fact that the contact info for that ebay id is in Clovis, CA, and one of the 10 listed Gary Daggett's resides in Clovis, CA as well. Like I said, it's about 2000/1 that a person out of a random group of 10 lives in a specific city.

The 75 minis were shipped directly from BBCE, so that part of the equation is wrong.

Seems to me if you had these concerns, public forum isn't the best place to challenge someone.

Have you contacted him via email or pm, this is not the place to start this imo.

I paid late in my rip and absolutely nothing from my $155. I mean a Drew Pearson 2nd year card. That is it. I have some great PSA 9 and 10 commons but I can't see not getting one star card. I was questioning the gum in my 1976 pack, it was a full piece but there were pieces that totaled another 1/8 th piece of gum in the wrapper. I thought nothing of it until now.

I look at these boards every single day, multiple times a day, and post very rarely. I have been watching the vintage rips with great interest. What has kept me from getting in on purchasing boxes has been the condition of the cards that people have pulled. I never saw such consistantly terrible card condition "luck" as when folks opened the '75 minis. I for one have purchased boxes/cases from Steve by myself and have never gotten the miscuts, poor condition cards etc. like it seems most participants in the box/case breaks have. I hope I am wrong in thinking that something may be off here.

    Doug,
Believe me, I'm not one to start mudslinging for no reason. I appreciate your input, but I had to weigh the possibility of this becoming a witchhunt, with the possibility of several board members getting ripped off. That's an easy decision for me, since it would be fairly easy for someone who is innocent to prove their innocence.

Just to be clear, I started this thread to potentially save fellow collectors from being scammed. No other reason whatsoever.

For those that haven't been following the vintage rips, can someone provide some more detail? How did this work? I recall a while back, someone would buy a case from BBEX for a group rate, then split the case up. Also, how many boxes/cases did this 80sJunkie guy set up for board members to buy?

Did you see the balls he had to post a near perfect Rice Rookie, Dead nuts centered Dickerson and a Barry sanders rookie score in his rip. That just shows he cheated. What are the odds of him pulling the best card from two sets and another top rookie? I rather go to Vegas. I am sick to my stomach.

I hear ya, I've been involved in two rips, but still, lots of speculation at this juncture in the proceedings.

I'm not saying it's not appropriate forum, I would think there would be some effort to contact the individual before
condemning the guy in a public forum.

I'm not saying I'm right, just how I feel.

    dabighurt,
the way it should happen: steve offers a case, someone on the board decides to be the 'gatekeeper' of the money until everyone pays and then pay steve. steve mails it out.

an option would be: pay steve and when everyone has paid, let him send it out. we are putting a lot of faith in the 'gatekeeper' and i was volunteering to be that on the 80s topps baseball case bust. i have no problem having everyone mail the funds to steve rather than me, i just like pulling from a sealed case. zef may have more info since he was involved and onsite on the 75s.

    Thanks,

the 75t case break was legit.. the packs were mailed out directly from Steve Hart.. i dont know about the ones where 80sjunkie was in charge.. but he's being talked about in other places too, and so far the evidence is looking really bad against him for at least lying about the 1986fleer and 1974 topps baseball boxes.. its fairly clear that the 86fleer bkb box was purchased empty for about $10..

so right now it seems he's lied at least once, for some reason..
