Maybe if we all send good thoughts, or post about how we're certain my Hinkle will bump, PSA will see it and make sure it bumps. image

Seriously though, I would be surprised, based on the scan, if the Unitas didn't bump. But even if it doesnt, a 20% bump rate on those cards is WELL worth the grading fees.

Doesn't look like the Unitas bumped...Again, centering really isn't the issue...Of the 17 cards I pegged at STRONG possibles to bump, I only hit on 7 of them...I was also putting centering as the highest criteria, and it most certainly is not the #1 factor in determining which cards deserve the .5. The only thing that all 12 of my cards that bumped have in common are very nice corners. Once I get them back I will most likely have a different batch to send in to PSA. I'll have to go through and pick out the cards with the best corners for the grade, regardless of centering.

That's my new goal. I'm curious to see how my reviews turn out as well since, like I said before, I pulled out the best centered copies and based on your feedback, then looked at corners. I think my next batch will just be corner focused regardless of centering and see what happens there. Of course, you are welcome to take that plunge before me and show me the ropes first. image

    Not at all!!

The Thorpe and Battles, were mid to low on my list of predictions..Neither were in my "strong" candidate group...So was very happily surprised to see both of those...

Once I get all of these back, I will start over from scratch and try and find a few other worthy candidates to send in again. I will now have IN HAND examples of 7.5 and 8.5s to compare to. Anything that IMO grades out better than or equal to the .5s will be going to PSA next month..

With the addition of a PSA 8 Nevers, I'm now in 21st place..woohoo. It may not be that impressive, but I'm definately happy. I only need 6 more cards to hit 75%!

But the quality of what you have is impressive nonetheless.

Congrats on the PSA 8 Nevers Greg.

By the way, is it prononced "Knee-vers" or "never-s" ? I don't recall ever hearing someone say it and I've always pronounced it "Knee-vers" lol

    So just out of curiousity...

I tried pulling up my Hinkle in the cert verification. It now shows:

    Grade: N/A

In fact, every review card I submitted shows that. I wonder what that means? Hopefully that they are all bumping a full grade! image

    Andy --

Stop whining. I'm stuck in quicksand and languishing at #45 with my set.

I'm praying that my Bradshaw 9 gets bumped to a 10 so it's worthy of being added to my none higher set and maybe that will get me to #44.

In all honesty, I don't care one iota what spot I'm in in any set. In fact, there's not a set among the 20 or so that I have registered that I plan on completing. I go for what I can get, and am happy with that. The fact that I'm in 28th place in the HOF rookies set is a true testament to what a tough set it is, and how many great collections are a part of it - and that very much includes that guy in 45th place image.

    Joe,

Only recently have I forced myself to purchase a card below a PSA 7...which explains why I don't have many pre-1956 cards..... Let's not forget how you earn a living to afford the nice cards that you do. I bet the board doesn't know that you're a male escort who services that 75 and older clientele in the greater Portland area.

I for one have morals and prefer to build the set on my meagre salary image

Well I think a PSA 10 Bradshaw would sell in the $12k - 15k range...that puts you closer than I'd care to admit. lol So you'd need a few more cards, but the point is the same. that would be one fantastic card to add to a set. You should be ashamed of having a 9 in your set anyway. Terrible. Just embarassing. image

Hey, everyone knows that shining shoes is just my day job.

    It's 5 a.m. Anyone else awake.

Thought I'd check the board before I headed out with my shine box....

Truth be told....I am working on being a collector. I wouldn't call myself a collector just yet.

I have never cared about what number I am on the registry. Just thought I'd throw my two cents into some friendly banter.

I think that everyone has there own standards they have set and we are all putting together the best sets we can.

The competition is really with your self to see how good a collection you can amass.

Is this the first people have heard about Joe's true passion? I mean c'mon, anyone who has ever gotten his voicemail has heard the lyrics.

    Just a gigolo
    everywhere I go
    people know the part
    I'm playing

    Paid for every dance
    selling each romance
    Ooh what they saying

But here will come a day
    youth will pass away
    then what will they say
    about me

When the end comes I know
    they'll say just a gigolo
    as life goes on
    without me

    'Cause I aint got nobody
    nobody nobody cares for me
    I'm so sad and lonely
sad and lonely sad and lonely
    Won't some sweet mama
come and take a chance with me
    cause I aint so bad

...and from the postings on portland.craigslist.com he's quite revered for something called the "hurricane".

Anyway, Marc, I know what you're saying about taking a step back to move a step forward. I watched you do that very thing. I've thought many times about just selling off what was "below my standards" whether it be eye appeal, or grade and picking up a nicer version. Sure, I might have to sell 3 PSA 6's or 7's to get one really nice 8... I'm so close to 100% now though that I want to see it completed. Then I'll upgrade. I need five cards to finish it out. Grange, Thorpe, Nagurski, Gifford and Ditka. That PSA 7 Bowman Small Gifford was pretty nice the other night but Art beat me on it. So I'm still at T-minus: 5.

    Guys,

The last few posts pretty much define why I have enjoyed collecting this
set! The people involved with it are just fun guys to shoot the sh*t with!!

This really hurts to say but I have decided to sell my HOF collection.

Shannon and I are getting married on Aug 30 th this year and could really use the $$ when we combine
    households.

I am really going to miss looking for these cards, but more so am going to miss being "part of the group"

I really have no idea how to go about selling these. I went to the bank last week to pick out some to send for upgrades but the rest I
will try and get rid of right away.

If anyone has any thoughts on best course, I would love to hear from you guys!

Also if anyone has a card they are interested in, shoot me an email at jmgabbert@hotmail.com

    Jeff CONGRATS!!!

As one of the longest standing members of this set, you have been officially been "grandfathered" into our group here...Never feel like you can't post your opinions or share thoughts regardless if you still collect the set or not. You have a wealth of knowledge on HOF RCs and your input will always be welcomed.
My advice would be to sell as many as you can at "VCP" prices to fellow collectors here and save yourself the ebay fees.

The rest, you should do a slow release via ebay..40's one week, 50s the next week, etc, etc. Thats my opinion anyway..

Your best time to sell would actually be July timeframe..

Ok, I got all but one of my review orders back today..I've gotten back a total of 48 of the 61 cards..9 of those 48 bumps, so 39 did not..Of the 39, here are the reasons given by PSA via the little white stickers:

    Corners- 22
    Corners and PD- 4
    Corners and Centering- 1
    Corners and Focus- 1
    PD-7
    Centering-4

As expect, corners are THE #1 issue when determining bumpage..There are a few that I disagree with after comparing them to by .5 upgrades. SO there will be a few going back. Haven't given them the hardcore inspections yet though...

<< <i>Whats with the pd is a card is good enough for a 7/8/9 it should not have a PD >>

They are all different...One I definitely know they missed on was the Alworth...They marked PD for his left shoulder smear which is on every single Alworth card I've ever seen...That doesn't make it a PD...It's going back, i'm think of writing (factory defect, check all other Alworth cards) on a small white sticker when I send it...lol

A couple where those small dark spots you sometimes see on cards, almost like age spots..One was for VERY light snow..Another was the originally invisible back that had been rubbed to reveal the little cartoon...One was a small wax stain on reverse...None where major, and I have cards in higher grades (PSA 9's) that exhibit the same or worse PDs than some of these do...

If thats the case the need a set parameter on print defects ,I sent in ten or so cards looking for full grade bumps late this past summer 2 came back pd because of very tiny fish eyes. 1 was a 8 the other a 9 so how can the 8 be declined when in the same order they have a nine with same issue.
Both were phillys by the way so not like a different era type of thing ,

Art, best of luck...Keep us updated..The more info we have on how they are grading will help those of us on this thread with what to look for in order to be successful with getting the .5's...

25 total, All you need is 3-5 bumps to make it a successful venture.

All we can do is make educated guesses based on what we see...I have a group of 15 I'll be sending in a few weeks or next month...11 of them were cards that were among the 39 that didn't bump in the previous subs...I simply looked at what they pointed out as the flaw(s) that stopped the cards from bumping and compared them to the cards that DID bump the .5...

Most likely will have a couple from the $35 sub (like the Unitas) I'll be sending back as well...

The Alworth is the one that really ticked me...Marking the factory "smear" that appears on every Alworth card as a PD...I'd actually sent that card in before as review trying for a full grade bump and the only thing that was pointed out was L/R centering...

It's either keep trying to get the card to where I feel it belongs or just give up...I'm down for one more try..

I never got an answer to my question: for those of you that have sent in reviews recently, did you check the certs after they logged in your cards? If so, did you show "N/A" for a grade? When I did my last review sub, I saw the grades the entire time. For these two submissions, I see N/A for every single card.

Gabbs-Sorry to see you go man. You've got a great set!

Dave - I have a well centered PSA 5 Matson if you're interested. I also have a BVG 6.5 I'm going to be sending in. If it crosses to a 6.5 or even a 6, I'll have a 6 available as well.

No, I never checked individual certs...I think that means every single card is bumping...image

Thanks to Gabbs, I am officially tapped out. If you still have them for the national I'll make a purchase from you then....

    YAY!

Dave...what did you buy now? Leo?

I will probably have them at Nationals, unless Bob decides he wants an upgrade. I've already got a PSA 6 Matson so depending on how the BVG one does (It compares favorably to a 7 but the borders are more toned than I would like for a 7).
