well soon its time for the big annoucements. HOF and all decade teams. This year with the Pro-Bowl a week earlier the Newbies dont get to drive around at half time like they have done in the past. i hope their ego's wont be crushed.

Now that he's announced his retirement, I can't see Kurt Warner not being a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer in 5 years - even if Favre retires this year too. It'll be a well deserved honor. As a Giants fan, it's still funny to think about when Warner played in NY. He was like a statue in the backfield with no mobility, and he averaged less than a TD pass per game. He certainly looked done, but it was nice to see him come out of nowhere in Arizona to surprise the football world for a second time.

I don't think Warner will go in first ballot, that is typically reserved for the guys who don't get debated like Warner will due to his low number of dominant seasons and those years in NY...Especially if Favre retires, IMO it will be Favre and Seau the first ballot guys in 2015...

Warner will however be elected to the HOF at some point...

  • Just ran across this while surfing...a little OT but of interest to most of us HOF collectors.

I covered the Giants as a field photographer for a FB publication during the 2004 season and I agree, Warner looked done---immobile,indecisive,holding on to the ball too long ultimately leading to avoidable sacks and fumbles. Of course, other the Giants O was no great shakes nor was the coaching innovative. He was yanked after 9 games and a 5-4 record so Eli could start.
  • I just wanted to take a minute and say how great it is to have this thread and how great the thread itself is due to everyone who contributes to it. This is really hit home when you step back and think about how much more popular (and expensive image ) vintage baseball is overall compared to football, whether HOF RCs or otherwise, and then see that we now have 316 PAGES of thread and counting, while the comparable PSA Baseball HOF RC thread has 329........POSTS. Just a nice observation, one week and counting until we have some new inductees to chase!

Hey guys, I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on Jason Taylor these days?
It seems like the last 2 years have decreased his chances of making the HOF?

He's one of my favorite players, and I really hope that he gets a HOF shot.

    Thoughts?

    Jason Taylor

    6-time Pro Bowler & 3-time First-Team All-Pro

Players whose career was of similar quality and shape according to pro-football refrence.com:

Dan Hampton*, Willie Davis*, Henry Jordan*, Deacon Jones*, John Randle, L.C. Greenwood, Alex Karras, Jack Youngblood*, Warren Sapp, Cortez Kennedy

I'd say he has a pretty good shot.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for the Thread and for this Registry. Admittedly, my enthusiasm becomes increasingly directed toward other sets. I appear in the minority of this set's collectors because I am not an adherent of the Hall Of Fame's continuation of inductee inclusivity. It appears that again a whopping 6+ men will be dubbed Cantonian this year alone. For the inclusivity crowd, I sure hope that who all of you want makes it. I must say - it's still interesting for me to find out who makes the cut!

Some of the prices exceed VCP average, and they are very high eye appeal for the grade as many of the cards are. I got tired of writing "Well Centered" - see the scans. PayPal payment, M.O.s, Checks. USPS shipping with Delivery Confirmation is free. I expect to keep some Philadelphia Eagles, 1935 National Chicle, and 1952 Bowman Large material; sell the Football Hall Of Fame RCs.

See the Scans. Some of these scans are with my older scanner which is less sharp, some are with my newer, better one. Let me know if you need a better scan. Because this is the Set Registry Forum and not a Buy / Sell / Trade Forum, I expect to post most sale updates in the Sale Forums.

2000's Team of the Decade released today. Posted below is the first team, which will be what I will send in to PSA for creation of the new set. I am going to wait until the Pro Football HOF website posts the team however to ensure what I have is correct. Many varying reports so far, most of which, to include the NFL.com and AP stories that list the players alphabetically per position. When ESPN was announcing them, they were not alphabetical and were listed seemingly in order of votes per position. This is what I have captured, but again, will wait until the HOF posts the team to their website, as in past decades, they've always listed as per the voting order.

How does everyone feel about the Pro Bowl roster expanding so drastically due to "injury"?

I mean, there are only a couple of metrics one can use to measure good versus great in the NFL, and now one of them is slightly less effective than it was previously. Ultimately, this could effect HOF selections down the line if borderline HOFers were named to more pro bowls than they should have been.

I fall on the side of a more inclusive HOF, but the idea that 7 (or more, depending on your source) QBs were Pro Bowlers for the AFC this year is ridiculous.

The Pro Bowl has long been dilluted as a measuring device for HOF caliber players. Look no further than than the last few HOF classes and you'll see players getting in with fewer Pro Bowls than players being passed over have. 1st Team AP All-Pro's carry far more weight than Pro Bowls, and have for at least the last 5-10 years. AP All-Pro means you were the best at your position. This year, there was one 1st team All-Pro QB, Peyton Manning. Conversely, in the AFC alone, they ended up with the 7th best AFC QB in the Pro Bowl. huge difference, and the HOF committee is well aware of it.

    From HOF Voter Peter King:

    Odds Candidate Comment
1-5 Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice Discussion on each will take five seconds.
6-5 Dick LeBeau (senior) Will top coaching work seep into debate for a very good CB?
7-5 Richard Dent I sense him getting closer every year.
9-5 Floyd Little (senior) One career 1,000-yard season, but strong Denver support.
2-1 Shannon Sharpe Numbers dwarf any TE currently in Canton.
3-1 Russ Grimm Voters may be creeping toward inducting first Hog.
3-1 Cris Carter Could get dinged for third year by strong class of WRs.
4-1 Don Coryell Sentimental favorite who made great offensive impact.
4-1 Dermontti Dawson What Mike Webster, Dwight Stevenson were to prior decades.
4-1 Charles Haley Five-time Super Bowl champion impacted edge-rush game.
5-1 Andre Reed Strong support from Rod Woodson could help.
10-1 Rickey Jackson Check his stats. Not better, but in LT's league.
12-1 John Randle Unique player. I really support his cause.
12-1 Tim Brown Immense numbers may get lost with exploding WR stats today.
15-1 Roger Craig First ever to get 1,000 rush yards and receiving yards in same year.
15-1 Cortez Kennedy Could move mountains, but hasn't moved voters ... yet.

No kick returners on any of the Decade sets, so no I won't be requesting that Cribbs and Dante Hall be added as the kick and punt returners, nor Belichick added as the 1st team coach.

There were actually 53 players voted to the team by the panel of experts. The decade sets on the Registry consist of the first team offense, defense, punter and kicker ONLY. If someone else wants to request all of the full 53 player all-decade teams as new sets, have at it. Not something I would be interested in as I like to request sets that will bring in maximum collector interest and not just a niche interest.

...Never said anything about 53 players...I was just referring to the 1st teamers (as that is what you have said the set consists of). Not knowing if they ever voted return men before or not, I was simply inquiring about this year's vote/this decade's set. Knowing you are a (rightful) stickler for accuracy, I thought it was a fair question, as he was duly voted onto the first team.

  • Fletch,

Cribbs RCs are from 2005, the only thing I could find on eBay are the Leaf Rookies & Stars and the Playoff Contenders auto. Since it doesn't sound like there is going to be a specific card linked to the Team of the Decade set, collect whichever one you like best! image

Why don't you request it if you think he should be there? Of course you will have to wait till the set goes live.

It's all good man. Just not adding kick/punt returners. Going to keep it in line with the other sets.

What I said this team consists of is: 11 1st team offense, 11 1st team defense, 1st team kicker, 1st team punter...I also won't be adding FB Lorenzo Neal (1st team)...Not looking to add obscure cards that are for the most part valueless, nor collectible. Want to keep it mainstream just like the others. If you look at the number of collectors of the past Decade sets, I believe that is a formula that works towards keeping the sets popular. I'm going to keep it consistent with the other sets.

As Jasen stated, you'll be free to collect any and all Josh Cribbs RCs you want with much less competition. So win, win.

Probably be a month before it gets up and running, but after that, by all means request it to PSA. If the majority approve, then there ya go. First, you may want to test the other All-Decade sets by requesting they add kick and punt returners to those as well. That should give you an idea if the other collectors are interested. Should also request 1st Team Coaches too if that's the path you are looking for.

Here ya go, make it easy for you. Go ahead and request these additions to PSA:

1990s Team of the Decade- KR- Michael Bates, PR- Deion Sanders(already on the set), Coach- Bill Parcells
1980s Team of the Decade- KR- Mike Nelms, PR- Billy Johnson, Coach- Bill Walsh
1970s Team of the Decade- KR- Rick Upchurch, Coach- Don Shula (They did not select a separate punt returner)

1960s and 1950s teams did not select KR, PR or Coach...

I'd be interested to see how that voting goes. I can't imagine the majority would want to collect the kick/punt returners and coaches, but hey you never know. You might FIRST want to confirm that Cribbs is in fact 1st team. If you have that confirmation, please pass that along and include all the other 1st teamers, because to this point, I myself do not have confirmation of who is and who is not first team. I'm just basing it off how ESPN announced the team and nothing more. I won't be sending this set composite to PSA until I get that confirmation which I am actively seeking at this time. Doesn't look like it's going to be released publically for whatever ridiculous reason.

Any member can ask to add any card to a set if that card meets the criteria of that set. Usually they then ask the others participating in the set to vote yes or no. PSA does reserves the right to make changes with or without the consent of participating members.

Why don't you request it if you think he should be there? Of course you will have to wait till the set goes live.

Good point and you're probably right. It's one of my main complaints with how the HOF committee is working these days. They want everything secret so no one gets pissed off. But what happened to standing up for what you say, believe and vote? Televise the HOF selection meetings. Release the vote counts for the Modern and the Senior candidates. The reason many want the secrecy is that they don't want to be outted as the non-footbal baffoons that they are.

If you read down through the names of the HOF voters for this year, there are litterally 15+ voters on that list, that if you read their news columns or watch them on TV are almost clueless to the game of football. Some of them barely cover the game and aren't even the team beat writers IN THEIR HOME CITY. Don't get me wrong, some of voters are real students of the game and know their stuff. Live it and breathe it. Most of THOSE guys/gals could care less if the HOF releases the vote counts or televises the meeting. Most of them write stories and put who they selected online for the world to see. Its the ones that don't even mention that they were voting or attending the HOF selection meeting that don't want to be outted as not even knowing who a Roger Craig or Rickey Jackson played for. They are the ones who don't have a clue who they are voting for until the individual presentations in the meeting. It's sad to have come to this, gotta hope they can improve things as time goes on. Because right now, its really pretty bad. And this is not an opinion. This is almost verbatim from one of the most respected HOF voters.

    jason,

where can we see the list of voters. i think cliff christl use to be the voter for the packers from the milwaukee paper. not sure who took his spot when he retired.

they might be waiting to see if peyton can win a 2nd ring this decade. that way it might make it easier for them to list him as #1 over brady.

  • Hello All,
I just got home a while ago, and I saw that " Bullet " Bill Dudley passed away on Thursday. I got many autographs from him over the years during Hall of Fame week, and at other autograph shows that I have been to. He was always a kind, humble, gentle man, and it was always great to see him. He was one guy that came back just about every year after he was inducted. I have a great autographed 11 x 14 picture of him and my 12 year old son Ben. Bill was the last surviving member of the Class of 1966, and with his passing there are now just 5 surviving Hall of Famers that were inducted in the 1960's ( Van Buren, Donovan, Bednarik, Perry, & Trippi ). He will be missed.

New HOFers will be selected tomorrow...Most of the voters have arrived in town, committee dinner was tonight....My final predictions.

    Jerry Rice-LOCK
    Emmitt Smith-LOCK
    Richard Dent-LOCK
    Russ Grimm
    Rickey Jackson
    Dick LeBeau-LOCK
    Floyd Little

Won't be surprised if Sharpe gets the Rickey Jackson or Russ Grimm spot, but to be honest anyone other than my 5 moderns above (or Sharpe) gets in will be shocking to me at this point. It will mean someone really wowed the crowd with the player presentations. I didn't think Little would get the support, but sounding more and more like both Seniors will go in this year. LeBeau might get 100% of the vote like Emmitt and Rice..lol..This guy is BELOVED by the voters...And when you hear its ONLY about what he did as a player..Ummmmm..Right.....

We shall see tomorrow, I think the above would be a great HOF class.

JP, this may be a strange question (or maybe not), but were Rickey Jackson's chances of making it this year improved by the Saints making the Super Bowl?

Also, if Cris Carter doesn't make it in this year, and I don't believe he will, I'll really have to wonder what the heck is going on. I thought for sure he was a first ballot guy. Then I was positive he'd get in the following year. The stats are definitely there.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Absolutely on Jackson...He was already getting a nice push, but with Who Dat nation invading Miami on an epic level, and no Saints in the HOF....I think he goes in this year...Not a lock because some of the voters don't know anything about the guy, but a nice presentation should do the trick along with some of the upper echelon voters giving him ringing endorsements and comparing him to LT1.

I agree on Carter..He has a handful of detractors, similar to Art Monk for being a possession guy and never affecting how defensive coordinators game planned...He's definitely behind Sharpe amongst the pass catchers now...Initially I has Sharpe going in this year and Carter going in next year...But if Sharpe doesn't make it this year, gonna push all the pass catchers back...It seems to be Sharpe, Carter, Brown, Reed in the TE/WR order..The first three will all get elected at some point guaranteed, i have my doubts on Reed ever making it though...If he does, it will be awhile...The good news is that no other HOF caliber pass catchers will be in the mix until Marvin Harrison in 2014...

Just heard that John McClain is going to present Floyd Little in the meetings rather than the Denver rep Jeff Legwold...Legwold is universally considered a homer as he only argues for Denver guys to get in every year...McClain is one of the senior voters in the room, a senior committee member, and one of the most respected voters in the room...

This solidifies Little IMO...From maybe, probably to likely almost definite...

  • Looks like Reed is ahead of both T.Brown and Carter after making the cut from 15 to 10. I'd put him in before those 2 also based upon his integral role on such a successful series of teams. Carter never made the SB and Brown went once. It's good to see him still above those guys.

Carter not even making the final 10! WOW....Thats a crushing blow to his candidacy, since they discussed how those 3 WRs should be ranked for well over an hour...

Well, I called all the modern HOFers except Randle over Dent...Pretty surprised about that one, every single thing I heard in regards to Dent said he was going in this year...Was not really detecting a buzz on Randle...Maybe that was the trade off after bumping Carter from the top 10 to the Vikings guy..lol

I was surprised by Randle, but he's certainly worthy of Canton.
Floyd Little IMO should not have been selected. I don't consider him to have been better than Roger Craig or Terrell Davis, though his selection may portend their selection in the next few years.

For next year, I'll predict Sanders, Faulk, Sharpe, Dawson, Dent, Billy Howton, and Tommy Nobis.

Meanwhile, the modern WRs will continue to back up until 2012, when I think at least one of them gets in.
