Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

------------------------------------

Cary,

I agree with you - the 1895-S is a tough date to find in mid grade;
I had a F15 in my raw book:

imageimage

I also had this VF 25 in the collection recently consigned to Ponyexpress8:

image

this 1895-S in AU 55 is a nice coin - also consigned to Ponyexpress8 - but I wanted a MS.

image

Here's my MS 63 that I found finally :

First, I hate the new photobucket

I've been looking for a nice 09 Liberty nickel for a while now with no luck, and then found
two in one day. This is a lot more challenging date then you might think.

The MS 62 1909 V Nickel is hammered.

I agree, the 1909 is a sleeper date and alot more
difficult to locate than most casual collectors realize.

• Hey gang,

I hope all is well with everyone on the boards, and I'm glad to see that the Barber mega thread still has legs. I've been super busy the last few months, ie, looking for work (currently underemployed....along with about 10 million other Americans), and visiting and applying to colleges with my son.

It's been a pleasure the last few nights, visiting dealers websites, checking out ebay, and seeing what's going on with the PCGS coin forums. I didn't realize how much I missed the coin industry. image

I see a few fellow collectors were asleep at the switch recently...
a great looking 1905-O Half in XF 40 just sold on eBay for $811.11.
Which is almost $200 less than what I bought my XF 40 for from Manorcourtman.

Maybe to some that's a premium price - but - its an SOB to find !!
I like my example better - otherwise I'd have thrown in a bid or two...

Anybody got any newps from the Heritage auction - or - the bourse floor at Houston ?
I had my eye on a few - but - only bid on one: An 1882 V Nickel - ANACS 50 - "J-1690".
I stopped bidding at $2500 - and it closed at $3,000 plus 15%. I was lead into a false
sense of security because I was the high bidder for a few weeks - before my max [ $2500 ]
was out bid the evening before the auction. I should have requested a Phone Call
when the lot was on the block....

Wow!

I also have a VF30 93-S, hellishly tough coin, IMO it's between the 93-S and the 05-O for scarcity in mid grades.

Between the two of us that's 3/7ths of the extant PCGS VF30s...

Mike, the consensus is this quarter is toned not PVC, what do you think? I can return it for a full refund, but 1907 is a sentimental date in the family and in hand it doesn't look as bad as these pics but it is there.

Ken,

I've seen quite a few coins with that type of toning...
I'm sure if I did some digging, I'd find one or two in
my sets as well.

Nothing to be concerned about - its a lovely coin !!
Congrats on the pick up.

• Ken,

I agree with Mike, you see that color toning quite often on the Barber quarters. I've seen that teal colored toning, mostly on MS examples, but you can also see it on the 1905-O, XF example below.

Ah the Barber Thread.....
So after almost a year of not acquiring anything, economic events have turned positive again.
Bills are paid, needs are met, business is good and there are coins to round up.
Today at my local B&M I payed about $50 too much for this one but was very happy to have brought it home. I don't think I've owned a 95-o Half before to be honest.

image
image

I picked up this sweet 06-S at Santa Clara last month with the look I just love in a 45/50.
Is a perfect mate to the 07-S I sold to a poster in this thread a couple of years ago. Note to self: !%@#!*&#!#@%&!
And thus will end the "coin photos with an iPhone G4" experiment!

Simple rules... one guess per member... first correct guess wins a PCGS certified Barber Dime

Dennis: Nice crusty better dates! Welcome back/ I'm on the sidelines now myself, but still trying to stay in the loop somewhat....

Craig,
The large image of the 1904-O is not the problem, but the two small
images are difficult to see what dates they are. I was given a helpful
hint by Messydesk about my settings on Photobucket. When I post my
Nickels - you'll be amazed at their size.

Don,
Great Guess - but - nope - its not the 1898-P.
Plus, Joe did not get his 1898 from me !!

Winner was announced on the 6,000th Post Give Away.

"blue594" was the winner. Thanks again to all who have
made these Boards fun and educational.

Here's the coin that started it all....
image
image

purchased from David Lawrence in 1994 in raw state
soon after I moved to Florida from Boston and Dave
felt it was an AU 55. This coin spent 15 years in a Dansco
to acheive that level of toning. I personally like this 53
much more than the 58 in my set.

I hope you like the large images - I was getting a lot of flack
because of the small images.

• An honest evaluation please. TPG VF-30 that arived today. Very tough date for a quarter, looks bad
in the office, great at home under incadescent lighting. I'm thinking dipped and retoning, but would
love the hear what the forum members have to say.

Great to see some new action on the MBT!

It does look like it's been dipped but I have seen much worse in holders (And I sadly, own worse)

I lucked into one recently, I just got a very nice XF45 from SeaEagleCoins that's got a green bean on it.

• Regarding the 96-O quarter, I'm afraid it definitely has been dipped, wiped (many tiny hairlines), and is now retoning. Tough date, however, so it should tide you over until a more original mid-grade example comes along (which could be a while).

Regarding the 07-S half, I also was tracking that one on Ebay to see how high it would go. $685.00 if I remember correctly. While the coin is in the correct grade range for me, it doesn't really have "the look" that I go for, otherwise Steve might have had some more competition for it. image

Regarding Dennis' comments, thanks a bunch! Don and I do have very similar tastes when it comes to halves. He recently sold me a 13-D that I am chomping at the bit to receive. Totally original XF40 with great crust and awesome eye appeal. It should look great in the current set I'm assembling.

• Mike,
That's a very sharp looking 94-O. However, I noticed the comparison of photos from when you originally purchased the coin with the BlueCC photos. World of difference! The eye appeal on the BlueCC photos is much greater with the adjusted lighting. I wonder if with the proper lighting, more coins would have more eye appeal...and better sell/buy threshholds? Clearly, your 94-O is a cut above most others from the photos...but is it visible to the naked eye? In other words, are the blue hues around the denticles on the obverse observable with/or without a loop in plain light? If they are then I would say that BluCC captured a correct presentation! What a beautiful coin!
• MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
In normal light, by tilting the coin in a rotating
motion - all the colors are vibrant and the luster
is very strong. This is one of the nicest AU 58's
that I have in my set.

As discussed with a friend about a few of the
coins in my set - its very difficult to remember
each and every one as to exactly how each coin
looks. Some are obviously stand outs. Simply
Brilliant AU 58's are not stand outs in my mind -
just nice coins.

The link below shows my sets - and you can judge
for your self what are outstanding coins.

One of the challenges and problems in the photos which I think Mike has really shown accurately is lighting. Too much lighting and you get the first photo of the 1901. Less lighting you get a more accurate representation as in the bottom photo of the 1901. It's a common challenge and thanks Mike for the example.

I have it under good authority that the upcoming Heritage FUN sale contains
a 1904-S Half in an NGC 67 Holder - which was recently crossed to
a PCGS 67 with a CAC Green Bean.

I wonder how many other NGC graded high end Halves were sent in to PCGS ?
Does that mean that the coins remaining in NGC holders couldn't cross to PCGS
in the same grade ? ... "Inquiring Minds Want To Know".

I have the catalog and the 04-S Half is very impressive! I believe that it "BELONGS" in either Glenn's or Mike's collection.

P.S. the 92-s, 94-o and 04-o have all been returned to me with green beans.

and I could swing it - if - and its a BIG - IF - you buy my
enitre Quarter Collection. You'll be able to pick up a few upgrades
and fill in the holes you have. You know you can do it - as you

Meet me at FUN - at Glenn's table - and we'll discuss the details !!
BTW - I'll have a few Quarters with me - to whet your appetite !!.

Interesting development on the top-end 04-S halves. Until very recently, the condition census had the top three 1904-S barber halves as two PCGS-graded and one NGC-graded. All three are now PCGS-graded and have wonderful pedigrees.

Here's the known top four coins with abbreviated pedigrees:
1. PCGS 67 secure, James Stack, Dr. Steve Duckor, sold at ANA August 2010.
1. PCGS 67 secure, Emery-Nichols, Thaine Price, John Hugon, was NGC 67, now also CAC'd.
1. PCGS 67, Norweb, now Shireman, not yet submitted to secure.
4. PCGS 66, Eliasberg, Dale Friend collection.

If you go to CoinFacts you will see great images of most of these coins, but the Norweb/Shireman coin is not yet imaged in at that site.

At one time David Akers owned all three coins that are now graded MS67, WOW!

It will be interesting to see how much the Emery-Nichols coin sells for at auction at FUN. There are some great coins coming up for sale at FUN, not just the barber coins we love.
