I think you got a nice coin particularly since the image on the left is more representative. I can see the area you referenced on the right talon, but it's subtle.
Dave- Like most of us...... at one time or another have been there and feel the same as you do. However, I've never sent anything to a TPG. The seller's picture looks fine, sometimes in every aspect, then you examine the coin upon arrival...... and see "what you couldn't' from seller pics.
Mike- thanks and good luck with the '92-s. Do you already own a Type I and are now looking for a Type II (for a set within a set)?
I am posting the 14-s I bought recently. I looked long and hard for this coin and probably spent way too much on it. But, now I own it and can concentrate on others (just as tough) to find.
Sorry to hear what had happened but I'm very glad you're sharing your experience with us and that you posted seller's pic as I believe I may have also purchased a coin from the same seller recently.
<< <i>My point in surfacing this issue is that I believe the ebay photo was doctored to conceal the the tooling marks. But to be fair, it is also possible that this particular dealer just takes dark pictures that brings out more detail but obscures others. >>
My thought exactly! but later I found out the truth behind his real intentions!
Here's photos of 1918 Illinois Commem. Same coin but two different listings! The one on the left was listed as "..toned Unc," while the right one was listed as "..toned CH AU." This guy obviously knows what he's doing, he is genius but in a deceiving way. His only intention is to SELL the coin in anyway he can. I checked the feedback and the buyer of the toned Unc had left this feedback "Coin was returned Now same coin is relisted but looks totally different HMMMMMM!" Stay away from this guy!
I just couldn't help myself - - I am a sucker for rim toning !!
This coin has been at auction a few times within the last few years - and I liked the coin the moment I saw it however, I have been concentrating on AU 58's [ I have this date in AU 58 ] and let this coin slide too often. Just as well, its quite a bit less now...
These images are not the best - I'll attach others at another time.

Barbwire, Thanks for sharing on the Lincoln commem halve...from the images, those look like two different coins. It's really amazing what one can do with Photoshop...I try to present any coins I sell in the most realistic presentation possible...but with background, light, quality of the camera, etc, it's not always possible.
Thanks for sharing...we may be talking about the same dealer...but nonetheless we now know to look a lot closer when we finally receive the coin and return it promptly if dissatisfied. Thanks again. newbarberguy
I was wondering how these do on eBay in Genuine holders. I have a nice 98-O that's gotten Genuined twice for damage/tooling (Which i can't see) that's otherwise a real strong VF.
I hear that the Genuine holders do OK on eBay.... do they?

I would think they probably do as well as any other cleaned or tooled coin except they've been certified as "cleaned or tooled"...at least the buyer knows for sure. I won't even break even on what I paid for the coin but figured I could recoup at least part of my loss.
Larry (SeaEagleCoins) found me a PILE of VF Dimes... all really nice raw coins. Got a 92, 92-O, 96-S, 02, 03-O, 05-O, 06-O, 09, 11-D and 11-S Also picked up a nice PCGS VF30 08-P Half too.
And I won that 92-S Half at Heritage tonight.
I bett hope we sell a LOT of cars this month!

Its a very rare coin - like I have to tell you - and I thought someone { Dimeman ? } might be interested.
RE-EDIT: Update: The 1905-O Micro O Dime closed last night for $960. Congratulations, Paul.
I hope the new owner gets it graded here at PCGS.

Thanks Harry !! Great coin !!

That's a gorgeous 1915. Looks like the one from Harry Laibstain's site. Great luster and INCREDIBLE strike on the reverse. The eagle's claw is as sharp as it gets on the viewer's right, the eagle's left claw. Amazing coin and very difficult to find as such.
Barber friends, This is an exciting weekend for me as I am traveling down to Florida to visit with Mike and view his great Barber collection. Mike thanks for giving me this great opportunity!
You may remember that he came to Georgia to view my small collection in August. Below is my latest addition that I will be taking to show Mike. More on the trip next week.
Beautiful '92-s. That's one I still need, looking for an XF. Have a safe trip to Florida. I hope you're not from ALABAMA because they're still upset over the SEC title game.
Mike,
Terrific half. As usual, you're outdoing yourself. Have fun down there and good luck.
Looking forward to examine your 1892-S Ty 2... if only I could find an "S" Type 2 in AU 58.
Something looking like this newp would sure fit the bill...
I owned this coin in 1996 - bought it raw from JJ Teaparty - sent it into ANACS in 1999 and it graded MS 61 - in 2005, I sent it into PCGS for cross at any grade and it came back as an AU 58 - I upgraded this date for my 1898 Mint set last year with a MS 66 from the Plymouth Collection at a Heritage FUN auction and subsequently sold off the coin below. Yesterday while reviewing my collection in anticipation of Darrell Mills' visit, I noticed the P minted coin missing from the series collection [ the MS 66 is in the Mint Set ]. As fortune would have it, late last night while looking at web sites on Stone's Master List of Dealers, I found this coin again...my old AU 58 - at Eye Appealing Coins. Its on its way home now...
The 1901-S in AU 50 and the 1915 in MS 64 Halves are waiting for me at the Post Office which I'll pick up in the AM.
If you want to see some great new Quarters - check out HLRC's web site....OMG - an 1896-S in NGC 65...1901-S in PCGS 63... and a 1913-S in PCGS 66. Might be time to sell off some old gold ... these three coins don't come around too often.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I bought this using the Bing 20% Cash Back last weekend. The luster is a little subdued on the obverse and very nice through the reverse toning. Bought at a nice discount from GS after the cashback and e-bay bucks.
I mentioned earlier that I had just picked up another Half Dollar collection, formerly called the Red Stick Collection; the new collection is called the Elbesaar Collection and this set also incorporates other halves which I had upgraded from my primary collection [ link at bottom ].
All images are now posted to this collection.
Thank you, again, Mike Planchard, for working with me to acquire this beautiful collection of mid range halves.
The link below is for my new set as it was purchased without the coins already in my collection. The NGC site is cumbersome when it comes to viewing images.
I want to let Darrell Mills know how pleased I was to have had him into my home this afternoon to examine my group of Barbers and early proof and mint sets.
Four and a half hours was overwhelming even for myself; I think Darrell had a sore neck when he left.
We had a very enjoyable afternoon talking Barbers and he brought his newp with him, a wonderful 1892-S Quarter Type 2 in PCGS 66 [ ex: Duckor ]. Image in previous post.
Thanks again, Darrell for all the kind comments and I hope your wife wasn't too miffed being left alone to go shopping and viewing the local terrain and Marco Island. Naples is a beautiful location and we had a beautiful day and an enjoyable lunch poolside.
