The Official 20th Anniversary Gold American Eagle Price Thread™

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
There is some banter going on over at the BST which is (rightfully) upsetting some of the natives. Since we have not had a thread about these lately (read: in the last ten minutes), I thought this would be a good place to discuss pricing of these sets, the individual coins, the market for these, etc. Since I am now a Modern coin wannabe, I will kick off the discussion by reporting that the sets seem to be selling at the $4500 level and above on ebay and have been slowly and steadily climbing.

Feel free to add to the discussion, add reports of buys and sales, etc. if you are interested.

  • I just feel fortunate to have my order accepted by the Mint! The pricing is scary, as I am tempted to sell a couple of sets to cover most of my cost. Not that I will. .....how high is high?

Bear that $5000 price is now happening on ebay unless there is a flood of these sets in a few days from the mint's next shipping, I don't see this price coming down. Even with the flood coming I don't see this set decreasing at all. There was a BIN for 4995.00 this morning. I was tempted, but backed off.

You know what is going to happen next don't you?

The unsavory who sold in the last 10 or so days for $3500 on "Pre-Sale" auction are going to start stating they never got theirs from the mint and cancel the transaction because they know they can now list them for $5500.

There is one on Yahoo Auctions with a BIN of $4,999. Seems like a steal, as I'm guessing they'll be 6-7k by next week as soon as those thinking they got some realize they didn't (This isn't my auction)

  • When they start going for 6k I'll definitly offer one of mine up.

Just think if the Mint didn't offer the UNC "W" as a single.

I still think the Unc "W" will be a very low mintage compared to other GAE Unc mintages, but a 30,000 mintage would have been sweet.

    Yes, we do. image

And, yes, there are now a couple public $5000 transactions.

Here's an interesting side note. It appears that all of the PCGS-graded reverse proof GAEs offered on ebay are Proof-70's. As singles, these are selling for $5600-5800.
  • Is there a noticeable difference in price between the sealed shipping boxes vs. sets that have been inspected? Meaning are those buying wanting to send them in for grading and possible resale, or do they want the actual coins?

What would be the best way to ship if someone wanted to sell a sealed box? Registered will miss the deadline for PCGS designation. Insurance on Express mail would be about $55 on $5000 in value. More than that would not be covered.

I want to thank this board, because I would never had ordered a set in time if I had not read about it here.

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
My understanding is that, if in the sealed box from the mint, ie....the fedex box, then one wouldn't miss the designation for the set (gotta be sealed though).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Prices definitely trended up. Bulk of the e-bay sales are now between $4,500 and $5,100 with a few outliars. BST WTB threads are also pushing up. I think the latest range is $4,000 to $4,200.

You have lots of time to send in a sealed set. No way its going to take 3 weeks to ship to PCGS. As someone who opened his box before sending to PCGS, the only coins i have unsold are the ones PCGS would not label as FS/20th Anv, the Regular Proofs. Everything else, including the empty boxes, sold--fast.

I would send it in sealed, you can always crack them out later if you want to.

I want to see how the Greysheet is going to start listing these. They need a "regular" category, a "20th Anniversary" category" and a "First strike 20th anniversary" category. They may have to add another four pages.

Just the PF70 Reverse Proof coin is selling more than the raw 3-coin set.

Right now there are active items of PF70 for just the reverse proof over 6,000

If you oredered multiple sets, are the individual sets sealed inside a larger box???

I'm shocked as to how the mint prioritizes shipment. I purchased in the first 30 minutes 10 sets, and they still hsow delivery of 10/6. Maybe it's LIFO...I think that's it!!!

The sets are not inside smaller boxes inside the shipping box. You open the shipping box, you have opened them all.

So what will the price go to if this reverse proof turns out to be the first, last, and only one produced by the mint? A lot of people that don't own one are complaining about the looks so maybe if they complain enough the mint won't make any more - what would the price be in a couple of years from now?
