Yes. Ironically, after waiting months, I had two more 500+ card subs pop today. One really nice and another with literally dozens of 5s from the same cards. It gets frustrating as I HATE grading 74s and 76s as it is easy to get killed when almost every 8 loses money and many 9s are break even, so I am pretty conservative on what I do send from those issues... seeing the grades below... just wow. I use well magnified light and grade 10k cards a year for perspective.

Ouch that really sucks! These cards are mostly carbon copies of each other. I got 9s on my '74 White Sox team cards that came from Bob. I bet if I resub the Concepcions, they all get 9s (or maybe 5s if I get the wrong grader). The main thing I've learned to watch out for, particularly with the '76s, is the ink spots that repeatedly appear on some cards like the Balez. That will take an otherwise mint or gem card and turn it into a 7. However, 5s are ridiculous. I didn't find any wrinkles or creases in the hundreds of cards I bought from Bob.
No, they are all sharp. Hell, I have roughly 150 of the white sox and every one I have ever subbed is a 9, probably because of the big yellow fish eye. I only threw one in as I was out of them. Funny thing is the order that went in six weeks later that popped yesterday had 3 for 3 as 9s.
I know exactly what you are saying on the ink, lots and lots of his 76s have it. Cardinals teams come to mind. gem otherwise.
Ironically, as I am going through that order, the same grader gave me: GEM MINT 10 1968 TOPPS 151 WORLD SERIES GAME 1 BROCK SOCKS 4-HITS IN... I was lucky to find a seller with a large inventory of pre grading and pre ebay raw. Pricey, but I have bought 11 73s sets alone from them with some nice hits. Over 120 9s on cards that popped this week alone.
The Geddes was sold the day the grades popped ironically.
Still tracking the growth in POP of 10s from this set. Check out 341 Gehrig ATG. September of 2012 the POP of 10s was 5 and today it sits at 15. That's a 300% increase in the POP of 10s for a very popular card and subset of the 1976 set. Cobb and Williams saw about a doubling of their POP of 10s in the same time period.
These increases in the POPs go way beyond subjective grading impacts. Subjective grading will result in a modest bump in POPs over time but not radical increases. Somewhere, somehow, more supply is either being found (how after all these years I still don't understand) or created (cut sheets, etc.).
More importantly, if collectors start to project future POPs based on recent growth, what will the impact be on the market for these high grade cards? Not good I would suspect.
Thoughts?
Looking for 70s Topps baseball & football PSA 9s and 10s
1976 is a very popular year and I would think there could be a more collectors trying to make graded sets in the future. I don't think 1976 Topps is as popular as the year of 1975, but all it takes is other collectors making high grade sets from this year to make the pricing go up. Time will tell though.
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
I think there is still a lot of raw 76 out there. I still believe a lot of old timers do not like grading and are holding raw, whether it be complete sets or other form.
The Gehrig's were mine. I submitted 30-40 and received a ton of 9's. I was going to stop sending them in. Then bang I sent in a dozen more and I received a bunch of 10's. Same with the others, most of the POP increase came from me.
Sorry gaspipe - I was refering to 1954's list. Anyway, what's the forum's opinion/experience on fish eyes and other ink spots on '76 cards with a 10 grade? Check out the 231 Tom House PSA 10 currently on ebay now as an example - not the first 10 I've seen with the surface ink circles. What's the consensus out there on these? We always hear alot about corners and centering but it seems surface spotting is more subjective to collectors and graders.

Well done! Also did you guys see the new '76 Eck PSA 10 and the first Briggs PSA 10 that just hit Ebay? Like we have been discussing, these 10 POPs just keep climbing and you are starting to see impossible 10s from impossible cards hitting the market. Just a matter of time before we see a Brett 10. I've officially started to extrapolate POPs when thinking about acquiring a 10 from this set. I don't look at the current POP - I look to where it's going to end up at in one year or so. That approach has made me much more conservative of late and I've lost out or sat out on some long sought after cards in grade 10 from the set. But in many of these cases, if not most of them, I've seen another 10 of the same card come right down the pike in a short period of time.
I'm not as familiar with what's going on with the 10s from other Topps years around the 1976 set, but from what I see generally the same thing is happening to the 72, 74 baseball and the 74, 75, 76 football Topps sets.
I am now firmly in the camp that most of these new 10s are old 9s that PSA is reconsidering under new (or subjective) grading standards. In today's world and with the market being what it is, no one is sitting on a mint Eck from 76 and not getting it in a slab - it was likely an "old" 9 that got that lucky bump to a "new" 10.

No I don't think so. I came across several thousand vending stars from 74, 75 and 76. The Gehrig 10's were mine, most of the Morgan 10's and several others. After about 20 Stargell 9's I got 1 and 1 only in 10. I don't think I will get another in 10. I also got 5-1974 #80 Seaver's in 10 as well as 17 in 9.
There's only way for pops to go--and that is up. The bigger the hammer prices go on PSA 10 cards, the more 10s you're going to see come to market, either via grading or reviews.

Yah but the tough thing is whether to submit a card that's worth $3 or $4 if it gets a 9 and $200 if it gets a $10. Feast or famine! I have several that fall into this category.

No doubt new vending finds will help bring new 10s and higher POPs. Gaspipe's Gehrigs are a great example. That should be assumed moving forward.
But we should not ignore the issue of grading subjectivity and standards dropping. One thing that really gives me concern is that if PSA's fee system and revenue stream are based off of assigned grade. From what I can see the rates PSA receives might be determined by the assessed values/grade. PSA in the end could be charging more or receiving more for a higher grade. Do you guys see this?
The thought of a third-party objective grader receiving more for assigning higher grades would be a flat out conflict of interest. Think about the college board charging more for higher SAT scores - the temptation would be to make the test easier to inflate scores and thus revenues. Or think of a credit rating agency like Moody's charging a company more for a higher investment rating - a creditor would worry the rating was inflated so the agency could make more money.
This concern above is technically different from the concern of high volume (and high fee payer) submitters getting more lenient grading standards. But that is also a potential conflict.
Looking for 70s Topps baseball & football PSA 9s and 10s
I finally completed the 1976 Topps Cincinnati Reds set I've been working on. I wanted each card in 9 or 10. Weirdly enough, the one that took me two years to find was Doug Flynn. By coincidence, two 9s came up on eBay a week or so apart. By this point, 2/3 of mine are 10s. Fun set of a great team.
Looks like the one 4sharp had that stingray linked is the same one sold for 611. Looks like he tried to get 3400 for it but went auction style and let it ride. Someone took a bath on it..
I just joined the Collectors Universe forum and am working on upgrading my 1976 Topps Baseball set. I am looking to purchase approx. 50 different ungraded commons in NRMT+ condition.
Does anyone have a recommendation on seller direct website or eBay store where I can view and shop for NRMT+ 1976 commons?
@Varj About 18 years ago I put most of my cards away. I sold off many/most of the graded stuff since then. But I'm digging out my raw stuff and building high end raw sets from 1972-1984. I'm still going through it all. So far I'm about 50% complete on 74T, 78T, and 84T. When I get thru my 76s and identify duplicates, I'll let you know. I'm pretty confident they'll be solid NM/MT.
I'm planning to go to National for 1 day - primarily to find sources on high-end raw that would meet my approval.
At National yesterday, I found a dealer with a really nice batch of 76s. I was able to take my set (raw @ NM+) from 25% to 35% as well as improving upon 10 cards I had. Picked these up from the same dealer -
Unfortunately, I didn't find much else at the show that met my interest or approval.
@Varj If you want to send me a your want list in a DM, I'll be glad to see what I have.

<< <i>There's only way for pops to go--and that is up. >>

I have never received a 10. :-(
But we should not ignore the issue of grading subjectivity and standards dropping.
I have several hundred 9's that fall in that category as well. Ive pretty much stopped sending commons. Its just not worth the risk.

Hi all,
I just joined the Collectors Universe forum and am working on upgrading my 1976 Topps Baseball set. I am looking to purchase approx. 50 different ungraded commons in NRMT+ condition.
Does anyone have a recommendation on seller direct website or eBay store where I can view and shop for NRMT+ 1976 commons?
Thanks and regards, JV
I would recommend BBCE or Greg Morris cards on eBay. Off eBay maybe Larry Fritsch.
