I'm working on the set but not as a primary focus. I picked up a PSA 9 Palmer recently. I also have a ton of high grade commons that I have to decide what to submit. I bought a bunch from gaspipe's cut card case. The problem is 8s are pretty much worthless and even many 9s barely return the cost of grading. So I have to be prudent in what to submit.

Yea I understand where your coming from. The only reason I decided to do 8's is to make it affordable. This is the set from the year both me and my wife were born plus I really like the set. I like the fact that when going for 8's I can pick up a lot of the cards for a couple of bucks as well.
I have a bunch of #550 Aaron's and Ryan's raw. Something like 220 Aaron's and 70-80 Ryan's. As well as several 10's of thousand commons from the cut cases. Cant get an Aaron 9 yet, just a bunch of 8's and 7's. Ive gotten a few Ryan 9's. Shooting for a 10 now.
<< <i>Gaspipe you can spin it pretty good. Everybody knows you review your stuff for gradeables...I mean, it's like placing a stacked bet at the Horseshoe
Sorry TSalems you just got a few good cards out of a big batch.......7's & PD >>
shrevebow, I guess gaspipe sucks at screening his cards since he let some 9's and 10's go through. another troll with no credibility.
I only get star cards graded because although 9's are great. The money is in the 10's. You cant guarantee PSA will give you 10's no matter how nice they are. Shreve is just a punk and has attacked me before, so what can you do. I have never sold him anything nor will I. I have not submitted any 76's besides Aaron's, Ryans's and a few Eckersley's in years.
I checked my Balez cards and they have print spots on them. I'm surprised they wouldn't give a PD qualifier instead of a 7 since you didn't request no qualifiers. The other possibility is a corner touch as some of mine have that as well. When you get it back, loop it again to see if you missed something. Be sure to screen out cards with print spots on them as PSA will flag that 99% of the time. With factory runs such as this cut card case, a production problem that shows up on one card will likely show up on most/all of them. However, when a card is produced right, you can run off a string of 9s or 10s as shown by other cards in your sub.
Question for those out there collecting the 1976 set: looking for some insight on reasons why the POPs of PSA 10s in this set keep climbing over the past 12-18 months. What's driving the increase in the POPs? Lower grading standards? Sheets being cut? Continual resubmissions of strong 9s that finally get bumped to 10s? New supply? I just see these POPs for the 10s climbing on a set that is almost 40 years old now and dont know what to make of it. See similar trends for other sets as well in the same era. Any thoughts or theories? Thanks.

There is ALOT of nice raw 76s still out there . Gaspipe selling a bunch is one example. I have many ,many Mint examples in 5000 count boxes.People are gonna submit them and they will get a few 10s if they turn in a good batch. Thats all there is to it.

This. Bob sold off a ton of beauties and I think a lot of them have found their way to PSA already. I recently pulled a few dozen 10s myself between what I bought from Bob and what I submitted from my own stash. It's also possible that 4SC or someone else came across a huge vending stash that's blowing up the pop reports. "Blowing up" is relative though. What is the increase in population, a few hundred new 10s total?
I recall when Mark (Treetop) came into a huge late 60s, early 70s vending hoard about ten years ago. He got so tired of getting 9s and 10s that he was blowing out boxes of raw commons at the National. Even those that he didn't submit and decided to sell raw were often getting 9s and even an occasional 10!
Thanks for the feedback on POPs of 10s. There are many examples of the POPs for 10s recently increasing. For one example, less than one year ago there was a POP of 1 for a PSA 10 #640 Bill Madlock. Today, that POP sits at 7. My guess is that the POP will continue to grow in the near term. Madlock is arguably a star card and the set is approaching 40 years old. To see that increase in the POP in such a short time for a 10 of a star card makes me wonder what is driving it. And the follow on question for us collecting these sets is: where are the POPs going for 10s? If the POPs continue to rise at this rate it has to have an impact on value and availability. Thanks again for the thoughts and look forward to others weighing in.

The Madlock is a perfect example of what I was talking about. Gaspipe blew out a ton of those. I think mine came back 'MIN SIZE' but I bet if I resub it, it will get holdered since it is only slightly undersized. I think a lot of those 10s came from his case. It's really selective though. Some of the cards from that case had print splotches on every card. So if you get a quality production run for a specific card in that case, you can crank out a ton of 9s and 10s. If not, you probably won't get any. Then there are the toughies like Torre and Briggs. You may get a few 8s and maybe a 9 or two out of the case...if you're lucky. Certainly the mid-70s stuff is at higher risk of having the pops explode compared to 50s and 60s cards but the supply is still fairly limited.
This is what frustrates me about PSA and the whole graded card service side of the collecting business.

When you submit to PSA(the grading experts), there should by now be no question of whether the card is MIN size or not. If it is determined as such, there still needs to be an acceptable tolerance allowed as we all know some cards where cut smaller directly from the company who made them. No one has tampered with those cards and they are authentic X year and X player cards. In those instances and with lack of any evidence of trim, the card should simply be holdered with the expert opinion that it is an unaltered card and graded as a card with no min size concerns whatsoever.
To suggest that you can send a card in multiple times in this condition and sometimes it comes back MIN SIZE and sometimes it just gets graded and holdered is where we should call BS on PSA. For the money we pay to have them graded, we should reasonably be able to expect by now that they should have a clear and understandable standard that no matter how many times the card is subbed, it should come back the same result. We could argue the same thing for actual grades of a card. I should never have an 8 get bumped to 10 and sub a 10 card but comes back with an 8 that I feel should be re-subbed to get the grade I know the card really should be.
While I understand much of this is all easier said then done for most of us laymen, however, PSA's responsibility as a leader in this industry, should be to continuously improve its QA process through training, evaluation, testing, technology, etc... So that we can eliminate these types of concerns to a large degree and get what we are paying for... after all, its Joe who says, 'Never get cheated'

It depends on the card. If the card is right at the undersize limit, it all depends on the measurement. I have a '71 Shellenback that I've probably submitted 6 or 7 times and they won't holder it. I finally stopped trying figuring it's too far undersized to ever get consideration. However, if a card is right at the limit, then it becomes more subjective as there is always some tolerance in measurements.
These comments have been very helpful. I believe that one big driver of the increase in the POPs of 10s has to be reduced standards at PSA. I just can't believe after all these years people are just sitting on massive runs of low POP mint cards and now just getting around to submitting them. There has been too much incentive to have them submitted in the past. But there are other things that could be driving the increase in POPs - what about new and improved techniques to cut sheets or doctor corners etc that would warrant a 10 from PSA?
Some feedback from PSA on why their own grade 10 certifications are growing in POP recently would not just be helpful to collectors but I would argue there is a duty on their part to weigh in. Being the standard and objective judge has a responsibility that comes with it. Collectors need to know that PSA is managing challenges and potential conflicts out there in a fair way.
And the last question this leads to remains: where does this trend push valuations and market? When I see a new POP 10 hit the circuit with a high PSA serial number, I discount the value of that card to a level lower than I had a year ago. The trend is that the supply is increasing significantly and the reasons for the increasing POPs are not clear. Increased supply and uncertainty are never good indicators for increasing or holding value.

I disagree. I don't think people thought it was worth grading commons from the mid 70's. Now they have witnessed the prices people are willing to pay for 10's and even 9's to some extent. That has driven some of the submitting, and therefore the higher POPs.
my $.02
"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
What is the magnitude of the pop increase? I don't track it, so I don't know. Whether PSA has relaxed their standards is open for debate. Many on this forum think their standards have increased in recent years and discount older holders for that reason. Personally I think their stringency varies over time, sometimes tightening, sometimes relaxing. It did take me a few years after I started submitting in 1999 to get my first 10. So I think they were initially really stingy giving out 10s in that era.
As for sheet cut cards, I'm not sure about this. I'm sure it's possible people are doing this but how many uncut sheets are out there? Also, the sellers that often get accused of cutting up sheets never seem to have the low pop cards. If you're cutting up a 1976 sheet, why not carve out a gem mint Johnny Briggs or Joe Torre or Hank Aaron? Maybe they can contain their greed to avoid getting busted. However, most scammers are more greedy than smart.
Regarding why people didn't already grade high end 1976 cards, we're not talking about 1952 Topps commons here. I still have a lot of gradeable commons from the mid to late 70s that are 9 or 10 worthy but I haven't submitted yet. Spending $5 to grade a $0.25 card has its limits. I'm sure a lot of other collectors/dealers feel the same way about these cards.
I've got 5000 count boxes full of 70's/80's cards I have yet to even consider sending in to grade...and I am just one guy. I think the increase is just due to popularity of those sets for guys of our age (40's-60's) who collected 1976 cards. We are just to an age where perhaps we can afford to take a stack of 30 year old common cards and send them off to be graded...to kind of relive that fun/thrill of collecting. I do see the fear that this could cause to anyone speculating on the prices of their "10s"...more 10's = less demand. Still I think we are far from flooding the market if we all decided to put the 76 set together or even just pick up the HoFers. I think for 20-40 years, the price will float but the pop will always go up (more right now as it is becoming popular again). Though as we start to die off and our kids dump the unknown commons on the market to a very few collectors of 70-100 year old graded Topps cards, they will pick them up for a steal. If you want to make money in our life time on PSA graded I think you stick to HoFers who are household names and grade 80's/90's stuff that the next 40+ y/o's remember collecting....and O, big point. Sell it before you die! This is just my take on PSA and the population discussion. FYI...I love it (PSA grading), it has inspired me to break open those boxies I've been logging around for 30 years and to collect again. It comes at a time in my life that I can kind of afford it.
Awesome thoughts from all. Some data I put together on a few key cards in the first 200 of the set. I'll show the # of 9s/10s from a year ago (aug 30 2012) and the number of 9s/10s today:
24 Geronimo 69/6 and 75/10 40 kingman 90/7 and 119/19 48 concepcion 79/5 and 93/9 50 Lynn 80/8 and 99/12 100 hunter 44/1 and 46/4 128 Griffey 59/2 and 70/4 179 foster 80/6 and 103/11 185 Parker 72/12 and 84/17
I am more confident on the idea of collectors not submitting commons. But the cards above are either star cards or players from key teams of the era like the reds - both of which are always in strong demand and of strong interest to a range of collectors. And many have (or maybe had!) low POPs that result in high prices.

There were a lot of cherry Kingman's, Concepcion and Fosters in Gaspipe's case. The increases really aren't huge if you look at it over a one year period. I have probably 10 strong 8 to 9 Fosters in my stash either already graded or available to grade.

More love for the 73's than the 76's on that first sub -- nice Eck though Looks like the first sub caught a tougher grader, as I know you don't send in 7's and 8's for most 76's.
More evidence of BS from PSA... Gemint is no fool to send in anything trimmed or even something remotely close to a NM card. PSA needs to figure out what the heck its doing regarding grading standards. As long as no one questions them and holds them accountable in these examples of non-sense, nothing will change...that is until another grading company comes along to stop the madness and force them to figure it out.
Results like his make it tough for me to give PSA more business either as a submission or even buying PSA graded cards...who knows what I will get in the holder.
What kind of experiences does anyone have with SGC? I've never subbed anything to them, but the cards I have owned by them seem like they are what they say they are.
Thanks for the confidence. Though I agree about their inability to distinguish min size from trimmed cards, I'm not immune to missing a defect or two. However, I'm confident some would regrade at 8 or better, some I wouldn't resubmit after rep oolong at them. Grading will always be subjective and that's true of SGC as well. I cracked a SGC 88 1957 Tigers team card only to find it had surface wrinkles on the back. It graded PSA 5. It had either been soaked or SGC missed it. I've also found their centering is more lenient than PSA overall. Both are good grading companies but both make errors and both have tolerances within the grades.
Wow...nice work on the 73's...the Clemente, McLain, Richert, Jackie Hernandez are all awesome 9's! I wish your Vic Harris was one grade higher. That's another tough one. But an 8 is still pretty great.
Just noticed something on Ebay that is strange. Two 1976 Topps Dave Concepcion PSA 10s up for sale. One card is PSA #20924824 and offered by best_bargain_sales. The second card is PSA #21655658 and offered by duffscards. Take a close look at each card under the magnify tool – exactly the same card? Same fish eyes, same spots, etc. But different PSA serial numbers. Thoughts? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.

A little more digging on my part revealed that I bought my card from duffscards, so that may color your thinking if you are inclined to suspect something fishy. That said, duffscards appears to have a very good reputation, with lots of eBay feedback, none of it negative. I suspect the similar problems are due to printing errors affecting all or many cards.
Tanks David. Also see that the one up on eBay now from duff has a serial number within two of yours. Not sure when you bought this one but they were submitted for grading with each other.

Im pretty sure all those Concepcion's came thru me. I've sold over 30000 cards to Duffs in the last year or so in bulk with no searching. Hes taken the good and some bad. I also found 4000 1976 star cards like Morgan, Griffey , B.Robby, Carew, All-Time cards, no Ryan's, Jackson's or Eck's. Ive sold off most of the lower end stuff wholesale but Ive submitted a couple of hundred cards from 68, 74, 75, 76 recently. I just got a Morgan 10, a Lyle 10 and a couple of others. Did not get a Stargell 10 but should have. I also should of gotten 10's for the Gehrig AT card, just no luck. 6-9's

Were these from gaspipe's cut card case? I submitted 7 or 8 Concepcions and got all 8s on them!

<< <i>I'm working on the set but not as a primary focus. >>
I like the fact that when going for 8's I can pick up a lot of the cards for a couple of bucks as well.

shrevebow,
I guess gaspipe sucks at screening his cards since he let some 9's and 10's go through. another troll with no credibility.
<< <i>There is ALOT of nice raw 76s still out there . >>

<< <i>Thanks for the feedback on POPs of 10s. >>

<< <i>These comments have been very helpful. I believe that one big driver of the increase in the POPs of 10s has to be reduced standards at PSA. I just can't believe after all these years people are just sitting on massive runs of low POP mint cards and now just getting around to submitting them. >>
I disagree. I don't think people thought it was worth grading commons from the mid 70's. Now they have witnessed the prices people are willing to pay for 10's and even 9's to some extent. That has driven some of the submitting, and therefore the higher POPs.

This is just my take on PSA and the population discussion. FYI...I love it (PSA grading), it has inspired me to break open those boxies I've been logging around for 30 years and to collect again. It comes at a time in my life that I can kind of afford it.

There were a lot of cherry Kingman's, Concepcion and Fosters in Gaspipe's case. The increases really aren't huge if you look at it over a one year period. I have probably 10 strong 8 to 9 Fosters in my stash either already graded or available to grade.

Results like his make it tough for me to give PSA more business either as a submission or even buying PSA graded cards...who knows what I will get in the holder.
What kind of experiences does anyone have with SGC? I've never subbed anything to them, but the cards I have owned by them seem like they are what they say they are.
<< <i>What no #373 Briggs graded in the 76's?? Would love to get a hold of that PSA 10 Tigers team card. >>
I do have a nicely centered Briggs 8. A light corner touch keeps it out of a 9 holder.

Please pm me here if anyone is interested in things I have listed on ebay. I'd far rather save a board member a few $ than give it to ebay, but once people message me on ebay, that is where it has to sell. They have really cracked down on offline that originates on their site.
