1980s Wax Packs and some CU fun

Lothar and I were chatting today about how much fun it can be to bust open a pack or two from the 1980s. We were reading The Baseball Card Blog and talking about some of the great sets from the decade. That got me thinking...and I have an idea. Here's the deal:

I buy one Topps wax box for each year from 1980 to 1989. Thirty five other board members that want to have a little fun each send me $30 (roughly, I'll need to do the math to be exact) and I send each of them one Topps wax pack for each year from 1980 to 1989. Then, every Sunday, we all bust one pack, starting with 1980 and going through the decade. We can post our favorite pulls, talk about our memories about busting those packs 20 years ago and just have a good time.

What do you think? I quickly priced the boxes at BBC Exchange and it seems that, with shipping (from BBCX to me, and from me to you) it will come to about $30 a guy. That gets you ten wax packs and a whole bunch of fun. (I'll call BBCX next week to see if they can cut us a deal, so this price could go down a bit...or it could go up a bit depending on shipping costs.)

So, who thinks this sounds like fun? Am I crazy? How cool will it be to bust packs looking for those great cards you remember as a kid? If this is a success, we could do the same with Donruss or Fleer down the road.

Let me know if you're interested.

AJW.

I'm going to edit this message with a list of board members that want in. Please let me know if you either want to be added or removed from the list.

Looks like we have a full roster. I'm sorry that the boxes don't have 40 packs, but we had to have a limit. If you wanted in but didn't make the list, check out VintageJeff's football thread.

Count me in also. You may want to shop a little, and see if we can get a good price. BBCX is first on the list, but there are few other I'd deal with, maybe we can get a price for a little good press here on the boards.

I'd love to do this with just about anything pre 1985.

    I would say...

Let's see how many want in...

Consider stopping at 1985 or 6?

    And do the math?

    Anything beyond 85 is just...well...uninteresting?

I'll agree. Who doesn't have a box full of 88's and 89's? I love the 87's but hell I have some unopened cellos sitting here. 86 is real cheap but a fun rip.

Hey guys, I'm not real interested in football, but maybe that'd be good for a second round if this one's a hit. As for doing the post 85 years...the boxes are so cheap that I figured we should just include them. I think 86-89 will be a total of about $3.00 per person at the very most. Probably more like $1.50 a person. For such little cost, why not?

It seems like we're well on the way to 36 interested guys, which is great.

Who's open to raising the stacks? I hate to undercut this great thread, but it may be mor fun and intresting to break say 77 to 85. I'm sure it'd be alot more expensive, but maybe worth it. The most fun I ever had was busting a 75 OPC wax pack. Got nothing star wise, but I ended up with an Indians team card - PSA 10.

I just edited the first message with a list of guys that are in. So far we've got 27. Who else wants a piece of the action?

I agree that starting with the more recent packs and working back is a good idea. While I like the idea of going into the 1970s, each year will really add to the total cost. Adding 1977-1979 will add nearly $50 per person to the cost. Personally, this sounds like a fun thing for $30, but at $80 I'd drop out. If there are others that want to do it later, I'd love to see the cards and read the posts, but I'll probably just be a spectator.

I'm going to make a few phone calls today to see what kind of deal we can get.

    AJW.

Or even chopping off the later years, and replacing them with earlier offerings of donruss or fleer. I would rather have a cheap pack of 81 fleer or donruss, then a pack of 88 topps.
