I received my package yesterday. I couldn't let you know until this morning. They are doing some street digging in the neighborhood and must have cut a cable. We did not have any TV or internet most of yesterday until they fixed it this morning.

I did not open the box yet.

Just a thought about the packs that we are going to open--I wouldn't mind some info on the sets(cards) each week from anyone that is familiar with each week's set. I know what the stars are, but what cards are difficult because of centering, print marks, varieties, etc. I wouldn't mind learning things about any of the sets. Maybe some were already planning on doing that, if so, great and I encourage more.

I will take a guess at 2176 posts.

    And here we go...

    image

First, I cheated. The 1981 Fleer box came with two bonus packs, and I kept them for myself. Sue me.

Anyway, these cards are pulled from three packs.

    Why these guys?

    1. I *loved* Eddie Murray when I was a kid, in about 1984 and 85. He and Cal Ripken were probably my first "favorite player"s. (Others to follow were Steve Garvey, Tony Gwynn, Rickey Henderson and, finally, Will Clark.)

    2. Tony Armas. I just always liked this guy. I even drafted his son in my Strat-O-Matic league in 1998. Anyone remember than Tony Armas Jr. was actually a Yankee farmhand, then a Red Sox, then traded for Pedro Martinez to the Expos?

    3. Rick Manning was *huge* news in Milwaukee in 1985, when the Brewers dealt cult hero Gorman Thomas for him. It seemed like blasphemy at the time, but both guys more or less stunk every after, so it didn't really matter.

    4. Rollie Fingers. The Brewers retired his number, despite the fact that he pitched a total of about 260 innings for them. A travesty.

    5. Hmmm...which of these guys doesn't belong? (and when did dudes stop getting perms like Michael Jack and crazy-ass Bowa did?)

    6. No one has ever looked more like a ballplayer than Rickey Henderson. He's like the Jack Nicholson of baseball...pure coolness.

    So, who's next?

    Nice stuff AJW

Here is mine. The reason I chose these six certain HOFers is because they are the only guys I heard of. That says a lot because I am a huge baseball fan. The other 11 guys averaged 4.3 minor league team names on the flipside.

Cough, cough, hack, hack... That gum was awful!! It just disintegrated in my mouth! Spit, spit, spit...

I might qualify for the losingest pack of the box! Here are my "highlights" image :

    image

The reason I picked these cards:

    1. Charlie Leibrandt - Braves, Twins, World Series...need I say more?! image
    2. Tony Bernazard - because I got to see him play for the Denver Bears on a pretty good Expos AAA team with Raines, Wallach, Randy Bass, Francona, et al.
    3. Kurt Bevacqua - because this is the ultra rare and valuable reversed image version! (Any offers on this one???)
    4. Sparky Lyle - because I needed a fourth to complete the scan...

    Other cards included:
    Luis Salazar - Padres
    Julio Cruz - Mariners
    Ken Reitz - Cardinals
    Rick Rhoden - Pirates
    Steve Mura - Padres
    Dennis Kinney - (another!!) Padres
    Gary Lavelle - Giants
Luis Pujols - Astros (any relation to Albert???)
    Scot Thompson - Cubs
    Omar Moreno - Pirates
    Willy Montanez - ...Padres...
    Max Venable - Giants
Terry Puhl - Astros with waxy back and all!

    Thanks again, ajw!

Good luck to the rest of you!
Ahhh. Feels good to get this underway finally...

Awesome posts so far guys. I'm actually barely awake at this point. Nothing like working outside in direct sunlight for 8 hours in Baltimore today pulling off an old porch and scraping 60 years of paint off columns to make a man nearly hallucinate(I'm mad I didn't!). Needless to say, I'm enjoying some brews right now...waking up at 545 tommorow morning and leaving DC for Baltimore around 630. Another 8-10 hour day. Money is money though and my reward for finishing the project in 2 days will be cracking open that pack of Fleer!

    Gotta love it.

There are 3 variations of cards so far. The Schmidt is the "batting" card as there is also a "pose" card for that #5. The George Foster is the "slugger" variation and there is an "outfield" variation as well. And the Bevacqua rev. neg.

    This is a goofy set.

Here are the results of my 81 Fleer pack.

    Dave Ford-scan
    Darrell Evans-scan
    Larry Parish-scan
    Bob Forsch-scan
Pete Rose-scan. Decent centering, but corners are bent. Second card in pack.
    Bill Gullickson-scan
    Jeff Burroughs-fair centering
    Don Stanhouse-nice centering
Steve Henderson-nice centering, but corners bent. Top card in pack.
    Bob Mattick-fair centering
    Larry McWilliams-nice centering
    Kim Allen-off center
    Silvio Marinez-off center
    Terry Kennedy-nice centering
    Ron Oester-off center
    Victor Cruz-excellent centering
    Jerry White-off center

I picked these cards to scan because the centering is decent and, except for the Rose, the cards have nice corners.

OK here is mine....sorry but my scanner is not working.

Only three worth mentioning. Alan Trammell (with a large noticible print dot under the team name), Fred Lynn, and Rickey Henderson Most Stolen Bases. Both the hewnderson and Trammell are slightly off center to the left but probably not enough for a qualifer and the Lynn is very nicely centered.

Eh........Hardly worth scanning. Foster has the gum stain. Hopefully better Sunday... Hard to believe that baseball's most feared slugger was as small as Rice is, compared to the musclebound beasts playing today. He once hit a line shot off the wall at Fenway that everyone swore never went no more tha 8 feet high - just a frozen rope.

All my 81 fleer were centered nicely, no big names though. There is however a very nice Tony Perez, Dennis Martinez and what would have been a 10 Lou Whitaker. I got to looking at it closer, but in the lower right corner there are 3 wrinkles that are hard to see without magnification.

Everything is just a bit OC, but in great condition. 1981 is only the second year I bought cards in packs. I remember the Fleer cards being just terribly off center. It looks like we got a good batch.
