    86nova,

Cards 181-260 were the third series issued out of four series for the set. I have never seen anything relating to it being scarcer though. I took a quick look at the population report which shows how many of each card have been graded and it does not look any tougher than the other series. Best of luck with your set.

Here is a complete write up on the set from PSA...

After making a decent little trade with Sam I am nearing the 50% mark on my set. I havent bought a single card yet and have either traded or submitted all the cards. I have about 60 cards set ready to go to PSA looking for 6-8 range mostly 7's. I also have found a few extras in going thru cards and sorting out my set in order to make the trade with Sam. If anyone needs or wants to trade or purchase the following please PM.

I've been dicking around with this set a little lately. I love these cards. Here are some highlights of recent pickups. I had the chance to trade for the PSA 8 Mantle, so I thought why not. I have always loved this card anyway.

Thanks. I paid quite a bit more for the Irvin than I thought I would have to.

    Worth it.

I just recently received this card back from a group sub. It has a population of 8, with none higher. A question to the 1956 collector out there. How would you sell this to get the most bang for your buck? Thanks Rich

Not sure how many of the whales' sets are viewable, but I know the top 20 guys are always upgrading. Maybe do a little research on the top sets to see who needs it and email an offer to see if there's any interest.

Very nice Walter. The Pee Wee is definitely one of the tougher, if not the toughest HOFers to find centered, imo. Congrats on passing the halfway mark. How are you doing with the low pops? The Noren, Pless, Mitchell, etc.

It's been a little less than a year since I completed my set, and it's a backburner type of thing, but I've upgraded 6 of my commons from 7 to 8. It's nice to stay at least a little bit involved with the set.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you keep us updated on your progress.

I hardly have any of the low pop commons. I have the #263 Bob Miller in PSA 6.5 and the White Sox team card in PSA 6. That's about it.

I know some people think it's insane to drop a load of money on commons, but the set builder in me finds the whole low pop thing fascinating. My philosophy was to first identify what the tough cards were and then to pounce when one came up that I liked. I always felt that there were so many more of the star cards graded that it would be so much easier to find one that met my fancy.

The mailman dropped of my most recent card purchases yesterday, and in one of the packages was a milestone card for me.

I've now reached 100 cards in my graded 1956 set... only 242 to go!!! Here it is...

    image

This is my 3rd attempt at completing, what is hands-down my favorite baseball set of all-time, but my first attempt at completing the set graded!

I'm no high-roller, so I'm looking to stay true to the 56 set... and complete my set in the 5-6 range!

Most of my set, I've submitted myself... and I currently have another 61 cards at PSA waiting to be slabbed. I've got a few sub-5 cards in my current registry set, which I hope to upgrade one day... but anything I have above a 6, well, I didn't buy them... I just got lucky in grading them myself.

I just want to be happy and proud with my set once it's complete. I'm much more a modern guy, than I am a vintage collector... but this 56 set just pulls me in all the time! When I buy raw to get graded... this has been my order of priority when evaluating cards... 1) crease free, 2) centering, 3) surface, 4) back issues, 5) corners! To say that's quite the departure from how I normally evaluate cards, which is mostly modern, is really saying something. So far, it seems to have done me alright. I'm not looking for the rare high grade finds... so getting back mostly 5's, 6's & 7's to date has been pretty satisfying. Here is to hoping I'm just as fortunate with my current submission(s)!

    Happy collecting!

    Congrats on hitting triple digits.

It's been said many times before, but it's true. There's just something extra special about a set that is self submitted. Do you find your raw cards on eBay or at shows? Hopefully the third time is the charm for you and you're able to finally cross the finish line. Keep everyone posted on your progress.

I buy all my raw cards at shows... never on eBay. I try to buy at a price that is good if I assume, with grading fees, I'm not losing money when they come back as 5's or 6's... with the hope anything that grades higher will offset my sub-5 mistakes. For me, I just feel more comfortable being able to inspect every single card... and I like having the ability to haggle on the price, in person!

Got poppage today on one of my submissions... this one, the all 1956 sub... and poppage on the 5th business day of a 45 day special!

Overall, very pleased. 31 of the 55 cards were in the 5-6 range I was hoping (expecting) for. More 4's than I expected, but also more 7's than I would have expected... so I'll call that a happy wash image

For me, getting a 7 on the Eddie Mathews pretty much made the sub for me! That's about a $100 card that I paid $30 for... but it's not leaving my collection!

Hello '56 Topps collectors. I recently completed a '73 Topps master set (#3 in PSA registry - 8.77 rating) and am planning to move onto '56 next. I will probably limit myself to 6s and 7s.

My question is with regards to pricing of white backs vs gray backs. I found this: "Cards 1 thru 180 have either white or gray backs with the first 100 cards containing more white backs while the last 80 cards contain more gray back examples." The PSA pop report seems to back this up. However, when I look at actual sales prices (VCP), #1-100 aren't always more expensive as gray, and #101-180 aren't always more expensive as white. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is the case? Shouldn't the rarer color be more expensive, given the same grade? Many thanks!

When I was building my set, I paid no attention to what the backs were. With that being said, it seems like the gray backs are much more prevalent in the 1st series than the white backs are in the 2nd series. So I'd be surprised if 2nd series white backs didn't carry some sort of premium.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I hope you have as much fun building this set as I did.

Congrats to Walter. I see he's hit the 2/3rd mark on the set!

Any other thoughts on the logic behind sometimes seemingly illogical pricing differences between gray and white backs? Many thanks!

Cards 1-180 can be found with either grey or white backs, but greys are scarcer in the first 100 and white is scarcer in the other 80. Someone seeking to put together a master set might pay a premium for whites in the 101 to 180 range and for greys in the first 100.

Here's a real life example. Due to upgrades, I have 113 series 1 cards (1-100). Of those 113, 36 are the less prevalent gray backs. Not quite 1/3rd.

For series 2 (101-180) only one of my 80 cards is the rarer white back. Once again I didn't care what back I was getting. This should give an idea of the relative rarity between the two series.

If there is any difference at all in price between white and grey back in the 1-100 series, I have not noticed it.

Was searching on EBay today to see what's out there (and isn't priced completely unreasonably) for '56s I still need.....
The ONLY #254 George Crowe that is currently for sale on EBay- at any price- is a PSA 3 (MC).

I'm not there yet, but at some point this is going to get pretty frustrating.

How did everyone's 2013 go for working on the set? Any goals for 2014?

I sort of got sidetracked with buying unopened product so I only added 5 cards to my set this year (all at the National). Thankfully, one of my new year's resolutions was to get back to my set. I'm about 17% complete which includes the Mantle all in PSA7. I'd like to get to 25-30% by end of 2014.

Didn't specifically buy it for that reason. I don't sweat the number grade too much if the card looks the way I want it to look.
That said, if I ever send in a review sub this card would be part of it. Card looks as nice in hand as the scan. Don't think it could 8 but 7.5 is definitely in play.

Review poppage. These were for my CC renewal. All were straight 8s in pre-1/2 grade slabs. Had high hopes for the Yogi. The Pirates Team and the Courtney are tough 8s, so I can't complain.

I'm actively looking for Mantle, Wynn, Ford, and Doby. If anyone is looking to part ways with theirs. Looking for 6 or higher, except for the Mantle.
    Thanks

I really like this thread. I have the set complete - about 70% raw (ExMt or better with many doubles) and the balance graded (6 to 8). I have been looking for upgrades (7 to 8) for some of my raw cards. I am using *bay for most of my upgrades; I am from a small town and have few, if any, decent shows to attend. After looking through this thread, I now know why I am having difficulty finding nicely centered cards - they appear to have already been collected! Anyway, I enjoy following this thread an seeing veresions of the greatest cards ever printed! Happy collecting to all.

I have seen a few comments about some of you that like to see the scans of the cards in our sets. Well, I finally took the time to put in my 56 Topps cards. There are some blanks because I am looking to upgrade the card by grade or centering. There are a dozen or so cards that have scans that I also want to get better centering samples. I have tried very hard to get nicely centered copies for my set. There are several that are very hard to get centered in higher grade and I got nice copies of most of them. I invite you to check out my 1956 Basic (22nd), Master (9th) and Super set (4th). They are listed under Starfire or Stafire's 1956 sets.

"Good Grief Gertrude!", those 1956 sets/cards are insane, absolutely unbelievable. I am not a member of the registry and new at CU but what a thrill to see your sets - WOW! I can tell the Super set has the Gray/White back varieties but what is the difference between a Basic and Master set? Can you use the same card in multiple sets? Congratulations on completing your outstanding collection and good luck with the upgrades. Thanks for sharing your cards with us.

The basic 1956 set just has one card of each number and it does not matter the color of the back. It does include the checklists. In the master set you need to add in the three types of team cards. The team cards come with a date, with the name centered, and with the name to the left. The color of the backs does not matter. In the super set you need one card with a white back and one card with a gray back for the cards 1-180. The team cards also need both gray and white backs. The exception with the team cards is the dated one that only was printed with a white back. Cards 181 to the end are only gray backs.
Yes, you can use cards from one set for another set. Thanks for looking them over. One of the pleasures of having a set is to be able to share with others. I plan to put in scans of the cards in other sets as time allows.

Question for those of you who have actually finished this set in all PSA graded:

I am at the point where I need 64 cards. I also seem to be at the point where EBay is picked completely clean of the cards I need in the condition that I want them (other than a few dramatically overpriced BINs). Every now and then, one will pop up and I go after it- but more often than not nowadays, when I do my '56 searches it's nothing but tumbleweeds.
I suspect you guys hit this wall around the same time. What do you do to get over the hump? Look for nice raw copies on EBay? Look for auction house listings? (do auction houses even bother with PSA 7-8 commons?)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

In an article he did for SCD George Vrechek has noted that there are cropping differences on many of the DP cards in the 1956 set. He earlier noted similar cropping differences in several of the 1963 DP cards. I have found such front cropping differences on the following 1956 cards...Porttocarreo/Oravetz/Grim/Moon/Roebuck/M Smith/H Smith/Tanner/King ..3 versions/Spooner/BirrerBurgess/Garver/F Larry/Swanson/Ennis/Atwell/Newcombe/Valdivielso/Lollar/ and Reese Not sure if the 63s or the 56 cropping differenceswill ever be formally recognized, but they are similar to the DP difference in the 52 Mantle, Robinson and Thompson cards which SCD has now included in their Standard catalog. The differences all exist because of an intended difference in the print set up for the sheets involved. Here are the Vrechek articles on the 56 and 63 cards

I have have not done the white/gray stock differences with my set, but do have all versions of each team card and the 2 checklist and an unopened penny pack. The 56 nickle pack, along with the 58 nickle pack are in my view the toughest Topps packs to find

I have also accumulated some other 56 oddities

I went back and looked at my records, and when I was at the point you're at now, I was still 2 1/2 years from completing the set. So you most likely still have a long haul in front of you. Plus I imagine it's tougher on eBay to find 56s today than it was even 2+ years ago when I completed my set.

I never ventured in to raw on eBay nor did I go the auction house route.

One avenue I did try was looking for cards in other companies holders. I wasn't enough of a gambler to try the real cheapo outfits, but I did have a good bit of success with SGC cards. I now have 11 former SGC cards in my set. I even had a GAI 7.5 Billy Loes grade a PSA 7 upon cracking out.

I also looked for PSA cards in a grade lower than I was looking for for my set. I then cracked and re-submitted looking for the bump. fwiw, I only did this once and a PSA 6 Vic Wertz returned in a PSA 6 slab.

Are there ever PSA set breaks on eBay anymore? I remember always being excited when Steve Novella would have a set break. The competition was always fierce, but it seemed I could always fill multiple holes in my want list.

I guess there really are no shortcuts. You might have to just keep on grinding it out.

bishop, you are the variation master. I've seen you post the different variations on other sets threads, so I'm glad to see you show us some 56 variations. I never knew many of these even existed.

Surely you would be the person to ask. What's the deal with the nameplate variations in the 56 set? I believe Ted Williams, Early Wynn, Don Bessent and possibly some others come with various colors on the nameplate on the front of the card. Do you know which cards come with this variation and what the different colors are? Thanks.

By the way, love that 56 pack. I've heard it's one of the toughest packs to find so my dream of adding an unopened pack to go with my 56 set will remain just a dream.
