The Official 1956 Topps "50th Anniversary" Thread

Welcome to The Official 1956 Topps "50th Anniversary" Thread. My name is Neil B. Downey. I am a 56er.
I am starting this thread in hopes of forming a type of 1956 Topps club. All collectors are welcome provided that you follow a few simple guidelines. All people that post here should be respectful of each other and each other's collections. All of our collections are priceless to us. Let's treat the others guy's collection (no matter what the SMR value) as we do our own. This could be a great place to post our want/trade/sell lists. Let's try to help each other in an honest and open manner. Please don't conduct business openly on this thread. All sales and trades can be conducted privately so that if they don't work out - no one looks like a jeck on an open forum. This could also be a great place to post important and interesting information on this beautiful 50 year old set. Hopefully we can set a high example of what card collecting was like before the sharks came into the water. Good luck with all of your sets. Neil

One of my favorite cards ... slight tilt but the color on the card looks much better than the scan!

    nice scans guys!
  • Neal and Jay,
Those are great scans and really nice cards. The artwork from this set is classic and among the best Topps has ever produced.

Don't worry guys...I'm not getting aboard this train. image

Hey NBD; give the uninitiated the skinny on:
    ----white back versus grey back

    ----team card variations

---- the toughest commons in this set.

...and show us some scans. If it's in an NBD set the cards gotta be nice. image

it was my first set...i love it....i will try and scan some of my cards.....ive done more with the 57 due to the greater challenge from centering issues...but i love the 56 set and will never sell my set.

The Aaron is one of my favorite cards. I also have a PSA 4 - that was one of my first "old" cards as a kid of 13 in 1980. One day I would like to upgrade my 7 to an 8. BTW, that is Mays sliding into home NOT Henry

Ray - I agree, the design is very nice.

I am confused...........A new poster attempted to start a 56 thread, looking for interest. Instead of using that thread this thread was started...........

The 1956 Topps Baseball set is probably my all-time favorite. Lots of other great sets indeed, but if I had to pick only one to have this would be the choice.

Horizontal format features a facial close-up and an intersting side shot, either in-action or posed. Some really interesting pictures showing Ebbets Feild and Shibe Park, among others, in the background. Plenty of HOFers are included and it's the first major set to have team cards too. The back shows three, sometimes truly clever, cartoons as well as season and lifetime stats lines. Not cheap by any means, however somewhat affordable when compared to many other sets of the 50s. The size is nicely quite variable, 340 without checklists is basic, you have team card variations and checklists in a standard "Master", white or grey back possibilities on 180 cards could make a very large "Full- Master" set.

The Ted Williams card # 5 , and several other less popular numbers, are known to have a very minor variation, the line color near the top of the player name box. I belive Teddy Ballgame's card may be found with red, yellow, green, blue, or no line. Anyone aware of any other colors or obsure variations ??

  • It's been an emotional week....had to part with my 52 Topps; Martin RC, Snider and Rizzuto not to mention the elusive 59 Fleer Ted Williams #68 ! Put most of it back into my 56 set with the additions of Kaline, Kluszewski, Washington Nationals Team, Rizzuto and quite a few commons all in PSA 7. I don't like the idea of selling HOF players cards to buy commons! Anyone else have this problem?
  • I love this set, but have had to give it a rest in favor of other pursuits. I plan to get back to it later to it later this year. These are a few of my favorites from my 56 collection:

Until I get back to the 56 set, all of my graded singles (about 70 cards) are available on my website www.southfloridasportscards.com.

  • David- that Spahn is a winner! Very nice.

I always thought the 56 set didn't get enough love. Some of the nicest cards from the 50's are IMhO in the 56 set. Ford, Mantle, Killebrew, Koufax to name a few. I was never crazy about the Aaaron & the Mays, I thought the "head shot" was redundant , I hate when Topps used the same photo more than once on a card, especially with a major star. They did this a lot in the later sixties with Aaron (68-69), B.Robby (67&69) and Carew (68-69).

The 56 is still a great set, enjoy it guys!
Whoever said we wash away with the rain ?

Lets post a bit more about this great set, hate to see the thread wilt away ........

My favorite card (non HOFer) from the set is # 125 Minnie Minoso, super colors in the portriat along with a splendid action shot of Minnie sliding into Phil Rizzuto.
Also really like; Glen Gorbous # 174 Shibe Park in the background of the posed small side shot, Don Besssent # 184 Ebbets Field shows its billboards very well, also Pete Runnells, Sad Sam Jones, Stan Lopata, Harry Brecheen, Mickey McDermott, and at least 100 more are just outstanding.

Only un-favorite HOFer is Mickey Mantle, perhaps his least attractive facial pose on any of his cards. The teeth / smile look kind of "odd". The nice action shot of him going into the stands to try a catch almost makes up for it.

Who's your picks, anyone agree with my feeling about the 1956 Mick ?

  • I'm no Mantle expert but his card looks awsome to me. I like it more then any other Mantle issue from Topps post 57.

  • Hi Guys, I thought that I would do some research on which PSA 7 and PSA 8 graded 1956 Topps cards have the lowest quantities as per the PSA pop report. I broke them down to a top 40 for the basic set and top 50 for a master set by using both pop totals for 7s and 8s. As we all know, there may be some collectors that have found a few harder or easier to get for their collections. This is meant to be just a useful guide for those that don't have access to the pop report. If anyone has any comments on these listings, we would all be interested in hearing them. I am sure you have seen those checklists up on Ebay?

    Stingray
  • Hi Stringray, As with any card in any set - If you throw enough money at them then you can get them. All of the cards on these lists are available to buy or win on Ebay from time to time. However, just about all of them will sell for a premium of 1.5 of SMR and up to 10 times SMR. In most cases these cards are tough to get a good deal on. Neil

Neil, was looking over at the 56 set registery, see you are at #24, thanks for being one of the few people to actually have scans of there cards. You have done a very nice job on getting some nicely centered and nice looking 7s. Looking at your set is starting to get the 56 bug into me. I remember owning a few of these raw when I was a kid, buying them from a dealer at the local flea market. Owned the Aaron and Kaline at one time I do remember, DOH! There are some very nice looking 7s out there and plenty of graded to go around. How long have you been working on this set?

    Stingray

P.S. I have to have one of those Labines!!
  • Hi Stringray, Thanks for the props. I have been working on the set for just over three years. I completed the basic set about a year ago and then the master set soon after. Since completing the set, I committed the unthinkable. I looked at every card in my set and decided that I wanted to replace some of the cards with ones that I though looked nicer. I came up with a list of 60 cards which is over 17% of the entire set that I wanted to replace. That 60 card list is now down to only 8 left. However, as I draw closer to finishing that 60 card list, I find myself wanting to recheck the set again for replacements. It may never end. I can't afford an all PSA 8 set or even many PSA 8s for that matter. I do think that with time, I can put together the nicest looking PSA 7 set ever assembled. Most people think that because there is a greater supply of PSA graded 1956 Topps cards than most other 50s sets, that it is an easy set. There may be more PSA 7s and 8s graded than in other earlier years, but a really nice PSA 7 or 8 is quite a bit rarer. Although a 1956 Topps set is one of the most beautiful and colorful card sets of any era, there is one major distraction from the overall set (in my opinion). There is in some cases a major cutting flaw. Some might also call it chipping. It looks like they used a dull cutting knife to separate the cards from the sheets. In any case, it looks like crap with alot of cards. It would be almost impossible to put together a PSA 7 set with no chipped or rough cut edges. I will try my best to get as close as I can to one. Neil

I was browsing through Neil Downey's set (really appreciate the effort to scan virtually every card, Neil, you have some real nice 7's) and noticed that cards #91 and #171 have the same background action shot! Gail Harris (#91) apparently is stretching at first while Jim Wilson (#171) is trying to leg it out. However, there's one problem: Harris was a 1st-baseman for the Giants and Wilson was an Oriole pitcher and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there was any inter-league play in 1955 (when the photo was persumably taken). I didn't bother to check their career records, so perhaps they played in the same league during an earlier season...

Anyway, I love the '56 set and some of my favorite non-HOFer cards (purely for aesthetic reasons of color, composition and action) are:
#42 Sandy Amaros trying to beat the throw to the plate...
#144 Leroy Powell sliding in to second, arms raised...
#162 Gus Bell making a shoe-top, back-hander in the outfield...
#199 Hank Thompson lunging for a ball to his left at 3rd base...
#275 Jim Greengrass crunching into the wall after making (or missing?) the catch...
  • jaxxrjaxxr Posts: 1,258 ✭✭
    Paleo......

Good observation on Harris and Wilson, I assume this is on all cards for those two and there is not a corrected/different background shot on either.

Many are aware that Aaron # 31 has actually a picture of Willie Mays running in his backgound shot. Not as popular "errors" show Lary Doby # 251 of the White Sox with a Clevland Indian hat in his portriat shot , and Wally Westlake # 81 of the Phils is swinging a bat while in a St. Louis Cardinal uniform for his background shot.

Just another feature of this set which makes it so great !

This is a great thread and a nice tribute to a beautiful set. I got into this set about a year ago, around the same time I started a '57 set (never a good thing to start two great sets at once). It's a real challenge to find nice, centered high end raw copies.

About 2 weeks ago I had an opportunity to buy a complete set in about EX condition, from an older gentleman in my area who put it together when he was 12 years old in 1956. I didn't need the set (I'm building high grade), but I couldn't pass it up, especially because it contained extra stars (T. Williams, Banks, Campy, etc.) and because the cards had one owner for 50 years. I don't know what I'm going to do with it (if anyone is interested, let me know), but these cards are so cool to have.

I also picked up a pretty nice Dale Mitchell out of a card shop last week. I've got my fingers crossed for a 7!

Buying Woody Hayes, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, and Jesse Owens autographed items
  • Hey '56 guys, just a simple question... On the '56's what grade is worthy of getting graded? I mean I've got some solid 6's, possible 7's that are very nice. All are commons and as far as I know, none are low pop of any kind. So my question is are the buying prices of these in PSA 6 worthy of getting them graded? Thanks. Love the pics by the way.

How many picked up some 56s from the auctions that ended last night?? Tried to win one just for personal collection and had no luck. I really liked that Willie Jones card, has a cool action shot on it.

Never met a Vintage card I didn't like!
  • I got blown out on the latest round on ebay as well. The higher graded team cards and a few of the mid level cards are going for the same as some HOF players. I think there is a larger group of collectors going for graded cards that do not use the registry for what ever reason.

  • jaxxrjaxxr Posts: 1,258 ✭✭
I have two PSA 5 1956s which were submitted via the fairly recent special, # 210 Mike Garcia ( kind of a low pop) and # 282 Warrwn Hacker.
Was hoping for a 7 on each and cant really see any reason why not, perhaps a very minor sctatch or bump that I still cant find.

Anyway, rather than re-submitting who knows when, I would just like to recupe my grading fees ( $ 6.60 counting postage and insurance both ways ) and offer them to any collector interested. Both have decent centereing, color, gloss, and clean grey backs. PM me if interested.

I also got a 5 on Pewee Reese, which was expected, nice card but not quite as attractive as the two aforementioned due to corners. This card I would like to trade for a raw Reese in a similar or bit lower condition, plus some additional cash with the lesse raw card of course.

I have the following going at PSA with hopes of 7's and 8's.
    59,70,82,97,159,200,209,216,229,237,241,254,256,263,268,278

the 159 should 8(I think it is one of the toughest in the set)
the 268 is alittle soft noway it gets above 7

I hope no one objects to me resurrecting this thread, but I get jealous when I see others sharing their latest registry additions to their favorite set.

So... anyway, here's my latest pickups:

A candidate for a crossover/crack and re-sub. Ugh. A house with 4 cats will produce a scan that looks like this.

    A couple of low pops.

I was blinded by the nice centering on this one. Pretty bad print lines.

Another low pop. The first black player in Pirates history. Opening Day 2B in 1954.

Hopefully this will spur other 56 collectors to get this thread active again.

Very Nice! When Neil sold his '56 set I was able to grab a very nice Duke Snider off of him from his collection...

  • Man, Those are some tough pop cards in great condition. I was close on this set in PSA 7 but never had the castlemen!

    Perkdog,

I like the 55 Spahn too. When I was deciding on starting a 50s set, it came down to the 55 Topps, the 56 Topps and 53 Bowman Color. The Bowmans were waaay too steep in 7 and 8, and I just couldn't see collecting a 50s set without Mantle, so it was 1956 for me.

I see from this thread you got to about 70% on this set. I just hit the 50% mark myself last month. My fear is that I'll get to the point where I'll have to lower my standards to finish. I'm looking for well centered 7s and 8s. Does a well centered Mitchell, Noren or Bruton even exist?

I put in 11 bids for cards in January and I've got two more in my sights this week, so I haven't hit that wall yet, but it's definitely something I've considered.

The 1956 set is a great choice! It has more HOF'ers than any other previous 50's set I think. Putting together a nice set in PSA 7 can be done without pulling your hair out as well, I love the 1955 set but it is missing too many players to be a "complete set" The 1953 Color is a stunning set but what kind of '50's set doesnt have a Willie Mays?

    Karb,

I love seeing scans of your set. It's my goal to scan mine in sometime in the future when I get a chance. I plan on showing off my latest additions to keep this thread going. Hopefully we'll get some good dialog in along the way.

  • there's the 56' Topps set, then there is all other sets. the coming together set, finally Bowman out of the way and all the stars in one set. Yes its a project, and there is the endless competition for quality graded cards. to top it off, the unknown factor of how psa is going to see your card, leads you on the ebay search cat fights for the top psa cards. one collector mentioned the castleman card, oh yes, him and several others. some cards are a difficult 8, others just to get a decent 7 is work. castleman is that example. just last summer i went to the national here in cleveland, what fun, the dealers decided that it makes better sense, according to their logic to bring ungraded or high 8's and 9's only to the show. thus you either saw non psa graded material in 7's or high end 8-9 psa stars. this forces the budget collector to rethink buying only graded psa's on ebay, and see if they can get non graded cards that may bring you a 7 or 8. good luck. you'll tend to find endless cards 7 and 8 of the same players, great at first, a brick wall later. this set is exploding, 8+'s are going through the roof. you'll see 300+ for stars easy now, thats 150 psa 7 cards. psa's inconsistency isn't making it easier. although they seem to have the OC's and MC's figured out. Rough edges are another story, you may find one coming back a 6, another a 8. you may buy 7's that seem to look better then some 8's. i think its all honest, but it sure makes collecting a psa 7-8 set difficult. I wish I made 100K this collecting would be a whole lot easier.
