<< <i>Frank thanks for the info .I THINK I HEARD SOMEPLACE MAYBE SHOULDABEEN? That some cards or 1 players cards were not really signed by him but his wife any ideas on that?

Also would you say it would be better to just try to buy as many as i can on the bay already graded to forgo the cost of the dna/psa grading fees? >>

    Skinsfan,

That's not a bad idea - buy cards that are already slabbed. It saves the PSA/DNA fee and it will only cost you the price of grading to have a grade assigned to the card if you want to add it to the registry). Alternatively, you can add an "authentic" PSA/DNA card to the registry for a weighting of 1.

My grandfather is selling off a bunch of older sets and I have first shot at them. I know very little about football so I wanted to get your opinion on a couple of autos. The Graham has a pinhole in the top though.

    Thanks for any info,
    Derek

I'm dying to find a 1955 All American autographed Turk Edwards..... I've never seen one but he was alive for over 25 years after the set was released...so he had to have signed a few!

    Greg,

Do you how willing Edwards was to sign? I've only seen a couple of index cards, and they usually tend to be pretty expensive

    Reese,

I'm not sure how eager of a signer than Turk Edwards was. My guess is that he either wasn't a good signer or didn't get a lot of requests - as his autograph is very hard to find. Same with Steve Owen. You would think that his autograph would be plentiful (1952 Bowman) but his is impossible to find also. I think that pre-1970's, not many people asked for autographs as many of the early players/coaches were obscure and not known outside the city they played/coached in.

    Greg,

That makes sense to me. It's too bad so many great players didnt recieve the recognition they were due. This is one of the reasons I started collecting this set. It seemed very overlooked and a majority of the autos are still pretty inexpensive.

    Reese,

Very good point. Like you, I started the HOF rookies and auto set because of my love for football but also because of how affortable it is compared to baseball. Just think how expensive many of the scarce autographs of comparable Baseball HOFers would be?? The most expensive football autograph is probaly Jim Thorpe - and that will typically set you back in the $2 to $5 k range depending on the the type of item that was autographed (8 x 10, football, football card).

Yeah, the baseball set is nearly impossible to finish, but those last football signatures are tough too.

I may be #1 on the baseball HOF autograph registry but my collection is not even on the chart compared to serious collectors. "ericba19" and "100411" on ebay buy tons of high dollar low # HOF cuts online but they are not on the PSA registry. Collect what you love and don't get caught up in completion and rank.

I need 15 more cards to reach 60% on the baseball set. If i can do that I'll start to focus more on the football autographs.

    Ullr,

Are you going to make a push to finish the football HOF auto set? Will I be seeing some serious competition over the next year???? image

Congrats on the baseball set. I've thought about starting the baseball HOF auto set but it drain too much money from my already meager card fund. I should be over 90% soon on the HOF football set but the remaining 10% (or what exists of the remaining 10%) will be very expensive (probably at least $500 per card for the remaining auto'd cards that are possible).

    Reese,

I'd love a Thorpe card but would prefer an auto'd Sports Kings over a cut signature. I've seen one or two auto'd Sports Kings and the prices were less than one of the cut sigs. Go figure.

I read an article recently (I forgot if it was Gridiron greats or Beckett) that there are 2 diehard Thorps collectors and that they buy up many of the cut signature, patch cards and basically any rare Thorpe card that comes up. Being that this is a new 1/1, one of those 2 guys are going to win it.

Greg: Nope, no competition from me. I will make it to at least 85% complete someday but my GPA will be miles below you.

I am still on track to have an autographed card from every topps, bowman, philadelphia, and wonder bread issue from 1950-90 but there are so many slabbed authentic that my GPA will never get over 7.0. NO STICKERS EITHER!

    Ullr,

Not that GPA really matters because it's no gauge of how nice the autograph is. I really like your concept of having an autographed card from every topps, bowman, philadelphia, and wonder bread issue from 1950-90. To be honest, I prefer signed vintage cards over signed newer cards. There is something about an autograph on cardboard...nothing compares in my opinion.

By the way, I'm in the process of paying for a nice 1925 Exhibit (in a Cincy Reds uniform) signed Earl Greasy Neale....it's very sweet.

  • Hey Greg,

If you need a Thorpe for your collection, have Knuckles create a Thorpe card for you. You won't be able to register it to your set with the $20. Authentic only special. I found a way around adding a card to the set registry. You have to send it to PSA/DNA and pay what ever fee they charge for Thorpes autograph, and request an "AUTO GRADE ONLY" they won't grade the card, only the signature and give it a grade. Once you recieve the grade for the signature, you can add it in your set registry. I found this out awhile back, when I was having problems adding my own cut signatures to the set registry. Because PSA changed their grading procedures, everything must now be sent to PSA/DNA and you must write on the invoice "AUTO GRADE ONLY" or they will just put the word Authentic and it won't register in the set. Customer service can't help you, nobody at PSA will help you add it to the set because it's an unlicensed card. Then you have the pain and hassel of resubmitting it back to them and be charged another fee again just to get them to give you an auto only grade.

I hope this helps, I want to see you hit #1 Your set rocks!!!

    Hey Frank,

Has anyone ever said anything to PSA about taking the 'non-signers' cards off of the set registry, for the 1997 UD Legends Auto set?

I was looking at your set (very nice BTW!!!!) and noticed that they're all listed as part of the set. Do they count as missing cards?

I've been contemplating sending in my set of these (still need 9 cards to finish) for grading. However, it seems to me that the 6 impossible autos/cards shouldn't really be listed as part of the autographed set, or at least counted towards completing the set. No one can ever reach 100%.

Also, keep me on your short list .. if you ever come up with an extra '97 Legends auto of Starr, Brown, Namath, Payton, Bradshaw, Harris, Unitas, Dorsett, or Butkus

    Mike

PS - Was the Russ Francis Legends auto card (you said someone got in person, at his house) a certified one .... or just an after market auto of a base card? Is it the one that Ken found a couple of years ago?

    Greg,

Sept. would be fine for me. I will hold on to what I have, which is close to another 50. Not all HOF auto's, but a few along with other sets that I am working on.

Al Davis...well we will see what happens with mine. I won a Davis card a few weeks ago, I hope it comes in real. The seller was selling a bunch of Radiers autos at the time as well, just like the seller that you were looking at the card from. Its hard to believe that many people would be faking his auto. Unless they send the in and someone in the office signs them. I am planning on sending in the Davis alone at the regular price and see what happens. I tried comparing it to other PSA/DNA autos and looked pretty close. So I bit the bullet.

  • Hi Mike. I haven't spoken to PSA yet about removing the cards. I was going to wait till I got all the cards that exist before "culling" the ones that don't. I agree though that they shouldn't be listed. I think PSA doesn't differentiate between cards that were pulled from packs signed, or a regular base card that gets autographed after the fact.

PS - Was the Russ Francis Legends auto card (you said someone got in person, at his house) a certified one .... or just an after market auto of a base card? Is it the one that Ken found a couple of years ago?

Yes, that was what I was referring to. I don't remember what thread it was written in. If you remember it, link it to this thread.

As a last resort, I'll try to get some of those hard to find 97 Legends autos TTM or at a show. Obviously i would prefer the original UD certified cards, but any port in a stormimage

Check with Greg Monteith. He had a raw Dorsett available.
Also, there has been a Namath PSA/DNA available on Ebay for the last few months. It's a signed base card, but the price has been dropping. Might be worth considering.

you should be able to add a signed regular card. as it appears that the set registry as it is setup doesnt discrimate between cards with AL or just a regular number. My Wilson is an auto'd regular card. I was surprized to see that it was added straight away.

I have to agree w/ Frank on this one. I only want the certified auto's added to the set. In addition, I would prefer if the redemption cards were removed. That or create a basic and master set. That would probably be the best solution.

i agree, when i get the replacement it will go in there. why not let people include an unredeemed redemption card if they have it in place of the auto since it doesnt exist, for a master set. not sure if there are any out there anymore but its just a thought.

Have you guys been picking up autographs for the potential class of 2008? I just bought a 2004 Topps Fan Favorites Richard Dent....which was the last of the 2007 Finalists that I needed. Looking forward to 2008, I believe the 2 shoo ins are Cris Carter and Darrell Green. I have 2 autographs of Cris Carter but Darrell Green is very hard to find. Has anyone had luck in tracking an autograph of him down?

Also, I've been buying and also getting a lot of TTM autographs from the likely senior candidates including Lee Roy Jordan, Billy Wilson, Dick Stanfel, Bob Hayes (which I bought - a 2001 Fleer Ultra), Chris Hanburger, Tommy Nobis, Randy Gradishar, ect... It's a never ending battle!

    greg,

thanks for the info on the goal line. are those tall boys or do they have to go under the supersize service?

as for upcoming HOF members. yes i have been getting some here and there. i will have to cross reference my own list with the ones that have been made for the RC set. glad to hear that you have had success TTM. its time for me to start. which ones have you found to be the hardest/easiest? On average how long does it take to get the cards back??

do you know of Buoniconti signs TTM?? i would assume for levy its best to send it to the Bills since he is GM now.

other than those 2 and any new members I am down to pretty much the dead guys. with most of those being the tough ones. i have some that are at PSA now and some that are waiting for the group sub.

  • Not to speak for Frank, but PSA will grade the Goal LIne Art cards...although I've never actually seen one w/ a grade assigned.

Are you sure Greg? I've never seen one either, and I love the Goal Line art cards. In many cases I would prefer to resubmit the ones I have and get a grade, rather than finding another autograph graded. Are they in the pop report?

I just looked because I was interested too. Looks like all are graded 1-2 which probably means they were signed and graded "authentic" but not actually graded. I'm kind of disappointed.

  • Hoping you guys might be able to help. I have a 1977 touchdown club Bill Willis auto and a 1975 fleer Immortal roll Ed Healey auto, both PSA/DNA certified without a card grade...just the auto authenticated.. I want to throw these on ebay but I'm wondering what they are worth. I already spent $40 authenticating them. I assume a lot of you have something similar so could you maybe say what you paid or if you have knowledge of value please share. A little help is appreciated.

You've come to the right thread!! I would first look on E-Bay and see if there are any others for sale. Another seller, KHW, sells a lot of PSA/DNA authenticated 1975 Fleer IR and 1977 Touchdown cards. I would imagine the Willis would sell in the $25 to $35 range and the Healey $50 to $75....somewhere around there. Nice cards, do you have any more of the 1977 Touchdown cards?

Frank - I'm not positive but I don't see why they wouldn't be graded. PSA grades tall boys and super-sized cards....why wouldn't they grade the GLA's?
