Jack Wallin had a 1974 Em Tunnell which he gave me an option to buy for $400. I didn't like the signature (it was slightly smeared) and I ended up buying a nice 57 Topps Tunnell for $65 (which is in my HOF auto set).
A 74 Fleer Tunnell is a tough card and very sought after by 74 Fleer auto'd set collectors (although I don't know many who collect that set). With that being said, I'm not actively building the set (I have 8 or 10 signed cards from the 74 set) and wouldn't be interested in shelling out big $ for a 74 Fleer Tunnell. I'd much rather have a Topps or Bowman signed Tunnell than 74 Fleer.
Just my preference. Why do you ask?

A Browns season ticket holder?? Do you keep your stubs from games??? I am looking for a stub to the Packers Browns game from 1992. I need it for my Favre ticket collection. Here is a link to my set. Might anyone else here be able to help. More so Saints and Chargers fans?
Jay, I MIGHT have a ticket to the game. I USUALLY save tickets from the games I go to, but I am not fanatical about it. Especially, they seem to get misplaced if I go to a bar after the game ,or one of those places where females seem to lose some / all ? of their clothes. Also, my basement is not exactly what you would call organized. I am working on it, but I have a ways to go. HOWEVER, if I do come across one, when ( NOT IF ) you make it to NE Ohio, it is yours for the price of......... FREE !!! Rocke

Hello Greg, I had lunch with Rod on Wednesday. I had him bring all his EXTRA autographs on any medium ( 3 x 5's, GPC cards, cancelled checks, letters, contracts, cards, photo's, anything ) I am in the process of working a trade with another collector in which I will get one of the 6 that I need. The one I will get, this person has TWO autographs of that HoFer. I am going to be meeting this person at the Chantilly, Va. show in March. I need to have some nice autographs of the "needs" on HIS list. I have multiples of some of his needs, but not all. So I needed to get a couple off of Rod , that I will pay him for, if I use any of his autographs in this trade. I am sorry for not being more specific, I will post details AFTER the trade. But, while I am looking at all his "extra's" ( this was the FIRST time I have ever seen all his extra's ) I was amazed by the amount of different "The Immortal Roll " cards that he had. He was telling me about how rare some of them were, including Tunnell, Nevers, and McNally. I remembered the post you had made with those Immortal Roll cards that you had bought. I thought you might be working on a set. Tunnell being one of the "toughies" I figured if you needed it, I would rather see you get it, than Joe Schmo. I bought an unsigned set of "The Immortal Roll" from Jack Wallin also, but never thought about doing a set myself, because I personally don't think that the autographs don't show that well on the cards. Ok - the deal is complete and the $ sent. For $1200, I bought the following lot of signed 1955 Bowman:
Len Ford Charlie Ane Ken MacAfee Chuch Drazenovich Carlton Massey Bob Clatterbuck Ray Krouse George Ratterman Jack Simmons Jim Salisbury Billy Wilson
In essence, I paid $1000 for Ford and about $20 each for the other cards. Here's what happened - I was trolling E-bay the other day and saw 7 or 8 different signed 1955 Bowman cards, and since I'm collecting the set I scrolled through the auctions. He had Tobin Rote, Len Szafaryn, Dick Moegle, Bill Johnson (none of which are too difficult to find) and then I saw Jack Simmons (d 1978), Jim Salsbury (d 2002), Carlton Massey (d 1979)....and finally I say Ray Krouse who died in 1966! Ray Krouse was the 1st or 2nd player to die in several 1950's sets (Gene Brito died in 1965) and from what I undestand, is one of the tougher autographs to find (if one collects signed 1950's card sets). I e-mailed the seller and asked him what other auto'd cards he has (I was especially interested in any signed 1957 Topps cards...which I also collect). He replied saying that has a stack of signed 1954 and 1955 Bowman cards that he had signd as a kid at Kezar (sp?) Stadium in SF.
I immediately e-mailed him back asking if he had a signed Len Ford. He responded saying that he did and knew it was valuable but wasn't interested in selling it. I wrote back asking if $1,000 would change his mind. Within 10 minutes, he e-mailed me back with a scan which I posted here several days ago.
We agreed on the Len Ford and then I asked if he would sell several of the cards outright that he had listed on E-Bay plus a few others from a separate list that he sent. We agreed on $1200 for everything and the rest is history! I am SO thrilled to finally have Len Ford. I now need 16 signed cards to finish the set...with the only 3 currently possible being Turk Edwards (I have a signed 55 Topps AA that was rejected by PSA), Steve Owen and Jim Thorpe.
Now I get to play the PSA/DNA game...I just hope that it's slabbed without any problems.
I'll post a better scan once I receive it...

Great pickups - I absolutely LOVE Turner, Pihos and Parker. A signed 59 Topps Jim Parker is deceptively tough to find...which is strange because he was a great signer.

Good luck - I hope you you're soon down to 5! Please keep us updated.
Tunnell is the toughest autograph in the 1974 Fleer set and Nevers is the toughest in the 1975 Fleer set. I have the entire 1975 Fleer set signed (including Johnny Blood McNally and Ernie Nevers) but only a few from the 1974 set. I agree w/ you - the design on the 1975 set isn't conducive to being signed. Autographs on the 1974 set look much nicer, but that set was produced in much less quantity and for some reason isn't as popular as the 1975 set....

Jim,
Ron was friends with Bulldog Turner and would visit him once in while to drink and reminesce. Ron told me that Bulldog liked to "bend his arm a little..." and tell stories about his playing days. Ron also told me a story about how he had Johnny Unitas sign 100 items in his hotel room (after a card show back in the early 90's) for $5 each...lol. Could you imagine?

Hey Reese Well your right , it is one of those two. Anyone else, and I would have already bought it !!!! He does have an extra canceled Pete Henry check. I have no idea what he is asking for it. Do you still have his Email address from when you bought the Bill Hewitt from him? It does have some slight wrinkles, I have seen better Henry checks, but I have seen many more that weren't this good. I think it is dated 1950 , if I remember. Rod told me he has only ever seen TWO authentic Henry autographs that were NOT on a canceled check. I can check with him and find out how much he wants for it. Rocke

<< <i>hey guys- why is Hugh " Shorty " Ray so tough?
John >>
Hello John, There are a number of reasons and they are varied. I am sure others may add a couple that I leave out. The reasons I can think of are: 1) No one ever asked him for his autograph! Why should they. 2) He was never a professional athlete. 3) He was never a college athlete 4)He was never an owner of a professional team 5)He was never coach of a professional team. 6)He was never a coach of college team. 7)He died 7 years BEFORE there was a Football Hall of Fame. 8)He died 10 years BEFORE he was elected to the Hall of Fame. 9)What are most autographs on, of Football Hall of Famers, that died BEFORE 1956. 9A) Bert Bell- cancelled checks, Player contracts. Hugh and his wife must have thrown out their personal checks every month, once they balanced the checkbook. Probably, most people did. Hugh never would have signed a Player contract. 9B)Pete Henry-cancelled checks. Apparently, Pete and his wife DID keep their personal checks when the Bank sent them back. After Pete was elected in 1963, collectors wrote to his wife, asking if she had anything that he had signed. All she had was canceled checks that he had signed between 1949 and 1952. What IF they had thrown them away every month? How many AUTHENTICATED Pete Henry autographs have ANY of you seen on something OTHER than a personal check? I have never seen one. My friend Rod has seen TWO. Do you think he would have ever seen those two IF they were the only two known to exist? 9C)Jim Thorpe. Jim was a WORLD class athlete for over 40 years, therefore, his autograph is easy to find, though still expensive. 9D)Tim Mara. Team Owner. Was involved in the NFL for 34 years, Yet his autograph is still considered to be the 3rd toughest of all Hall of Famers. 9E)Charles Bidwill.Team Owner. Was involved in NFL for 14 years,Is considered the 2nd toughest autograph. 9F)Joe Carr. NFL Commissioner. Was involved in NFL for 18 years, Is considered the 4th toughest autograph. 9D-9E-9F At least they were VISIBLE men in the early NFL, being that they were owners/commissioner. Hugh would have been an invisible man in the formation of the league. Anyone want to weigh in? Rocke

Hello Reese, Yes Pete Henry checks are in that area, maybe a little higher. I paid $1027.00 for mine from a November 2007 Heritage auction. The extra one that Rod has for sale is very nice. You can tell that years ago, it had been wrinkled/folded a little, but nothing to bad, and there is no creasing by the signature. The one he is keeping is REALLY nice. He bought it from Ron Gordon for $1,300.00 at the 2007 NATIONAL in Cleveland. I don't think he is in a big hurry to sell the extra one. I understand about trying not to shell out big bucks for an autograph, in order to save for a house. We all want to collect autographs, BUT at the same time we have to keep our priorities straight. Which leads me to Greg M. As some of you may have read, Greg recently posted that he had 3 cards for sale. I committed to buy one of them. Greg and I exchanged a couple of Emails to get each others home addresses. He also told me something that he has going on in his life right now. I will not say what it is, I will let HIM do it, if he chooses. All I WILL say, is, I TRULY I hope that he can make it to NE Ohio for either Hall of Fame Induction or The 2009 National in Cleveland, because I always feel VERY lucky when I meet someone new, that I feel HONORED to have as a new friend. And Greg is a MAN of GREAT charachter, that POSITIVELY has his priorities STRAIGHT. Rocke

Unfortuantely, w/ HOFers like Greasy Neale you really don't have much to choose from. At least with the Lombardi and Trafton cuts, I was able to wait for one that I liked. With SP cuts like Neale, the 'pickings are VERY slim.

That is awesome Greg. My sister adopted a 1 yr old and now, after almost 2 years, she is as much a part of the family as anyone else. Good luck and congratulations.

Jay, I hope you understand. I have a couple of physical deficiencies. The first one is, I have a bad habit of putting my foot ( feet ) in my mouth. The second, which I don't do quite as often, since it is a little harder to do, but I can also be adept at sticking my head up my a&s. I am sorry. Please accept my SINCERE apology. hey to offense taken. you dont owe me dinner either but maybe a beer to sooth me. i just had to respond. neale auto'd cards are hard to come by. i let greg go after the exhibit signed card which in my book is the best as its hand signed. after that the rest of us for the auto'd card set are only left with the newer cuts. and those are hard to come by. my options at the present were slim to none.

Nice Pick-up Mike. You are 100% right about the artwork on Goal Line Art Cards ( GLAC ). I absolutely Love them. I feel SOOOOOOOOOO Lucky to have one of the "GOLD" sets. No matter how far down the toilet our economy goes, I will NEVER sell my set. I was HONORED to have Gary Thomas and his wife over to my home about 1 year ago. They were here for about 1-1/2 hours looking at my collection. Then I took them out to eat for lunch. To me that was as big, if not a bigger thrill than the Football HoFers that I have gotten to drive and take out to eat after the local card show that I help out with. My buddy Rod, that you have bought a couple of things from, he also knew about the item that you had Gary do for you. You sent me a scan of it a while ago, and I guess you had sent one to Rod a while ago. You should post a scan of that item Mike. It's something that you should be very proud of, ( as I know you are).

I MIGHT have a ticket to the game. FREE !!!

Hello Greg,
I had lunch with Rod on Wednesday.

Ron was friends with Bulldog Turner and would visit him once in while to drink and reminesce. Ron told me that Bulldog liked to "bend his arm a little..." and tell stories about his playing days.

<< <i>hey guys- why is Hugh " Shorty " Ray so tough?
John >>
Hello John,
There are a number of reasons and they are varied. I am sure others may add a couple that I leave out. The reasons I can think of are:
1) No one ever asked him for his autograph! Why should they.
2) He was never a professional athlete.
3) He was never a college athlete
4)He was never an owner of a professional team
5)He was never coach of a professional team.
9E)Charles Bidwill.Team Owner.Was involved in NFL for 14 years,Is considered the 2nd toughest autograph.

<< <i>I figured it had to be one you already had! Well I really don't have the money for it right now. I'm saving up so I can put a downpayment on a house. I am curious about the price though. Henry checks typically sell between $800-$1000 correct?
Reese >>
Hello Reese,
Yes Pete Henry checks are in that area, maybe a little higher.

Unfortuantely, w/ HOFers like Greasy Neale you really don't have much to choose from. At least with the Lombardi and Trafton cuts, I was able to wait for one that I liked. With SP cuts like Neale, the 'pickings are VERY slim.

That is just so AWESOME !!!!!!! I hope you don't mind my asking you to post that Gary Thomas GLAC of your Father. I know what a great item I think it is, as does my buddy Rod. What a GREAT tribute. I wanted to ask you to post it, as I thought everyone would really enjoy seeing it. Thanks Mike.

What was your father's name? You've said it before but I forgot.
