    << <i>Concerning Chuck Bednarik

Jane Bosley does a local card show/autograph show here in Canton every month. Her website is www.landofboz.com For about the last year or so, I have had the thrill of taking her autograph guest out to eat and then drive them to either the Akron/Canton airport or the Cleveland airport. This coming Sunday she is having Chuck. I have got his autograph many times in person, in the past....... but I am VERY excited to get to take him out to eat and then to Akron/Canton this Sunday.

    Rocke >>

    Rocke,

How was your visit w/ Chuck Bednairk? I'd love to hear about it.

    Rgs,

    Greg M. >>

Hello everyone, Yes it HAS been VERY quiet lately. I typed up a response of about 10 paragraphs about two weeks ago. When I went to post it, I was denied because of one word that I had typed in. Then I changed the word, which was a competely innocent word, when I tried to re-post, I was told that I couldn't post the same thing twice. So I had to delete the whole thing. Then my computer quit working. Took a week to get it back. Then my parents and brother were here from Phoenix, Az. for a week and a half. Oh well..... This version will be a little shorter than the first time I typed it up.
The autograph show ended at 3:00PM Chuck came to Canton with his wife. His flight was to leave Canton/Akron (CAK) airport at 6:00PM. This was the 6th time that I have got to drive the autograph guest to CAK , Both Ray Guy and Rayfield Wright had to get right to the airport, no time to take them out to eat before their flight. Asked Chuck and Emma where they wanted to eat, I made some suggestions, They decided to go with Macaroni Grill, which is a very good Italian restaurant.
One of my standard questions is " Who did you play with, or against, that is NOT in the Hall of Fame that you think should be?" I have gotten a great variety of answers, and Chuck only gave me one name. Al Wistert. I asked him about his coach, Earle "Greasy" Neale, asking Chuck to present him to the Hall. Chuck said that Earle knew that one of Chuck's major's in college was Public speaking, and that he wanted someone that would do a good job of speaking for him.
I asked him about his different Hall of Fame teamates, Pete Pihos, Tommy McDonald, Norm VanBrocklin, Steve VanBuren, Alex Wojciechowicz. Told him that I never got to meet Alex, but wished that I could have. He told me that Steve is not doing very well these days, which I had already heard. I told him about the last time that I saw Pihos, which was last year at the CSA show in Chantilly, Va. last year. Told him that Pete didn't look to good either.
I asked him if Neale ever talked about his Major league baseball career. He said "Never"
Chuck told me that he and Emma have been married for 60 years. They have 5 daughters. I asked him how he didn't go nuts in a home with a wife and 5 daughters, He said " I wasn't home. I was gone all the time" CLASSIC !!!
He said that he doubted that he would ever come back for Hall of Fame week. He said that he has been here enough for HOF week and that he is getting to old for all the running around that is required of all of the Hall of Famers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
    Have to go for now.

Thanks for your e-mail. PSA rejected all 3 Luckman auto's that I submitted...even though at least one perfectly matched an example on PSA/DNA's own database!

    Hey guys,

So just purchased this Mac Speedie:

    Speedie Link

Legit? It looked pretty good to me and his other Cleveland items looked authentic, so I went for it. I guess worse comes to worse I am out $30.

    Jim,

Thanks, I thought it looked good. I would say that we both got steals. You definitely have more guts than me making an offer:}. I figured I better just hit the BIN before somebody else came along. Do you think Mac will get HOF consideration again in the future?

I have been of the opinion he is one of the most over-looked guys for the HOF. Hopefully someday he will get inducted.

I doubt that Speedie would ever get inducted - considering both Fears and Hirsch are aleady in the HOF. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any team where 3 players from the same position (or defensive/offensive lines) who are in the HOF.

    Rocke,

Good point. I could potentially see 3 HOFers from the front 7 or even an offensive line...but not 3 WR's (especially considering the WR position is under-represented compared to QB's and RB's).

FYI - I'd suggest that you start looking for a Claude Humphrey auto. His auto is tough to find and he doesn't sign TTM. I picked up a signed rookie last year for c. $15 to $20...but I haven't seen many for sale.

    Reese,

I could see it selling for $1500....which I would really hate to spend. I know of at least 2 people who need the Lyman for their 2002 Leg Cut set plus you, Frank, Jay and I need the card. To boot the card is a pop 20 to 25 and rarely comes up for sale. It could get ugly.

I need the following who are possible on cards:

Turk Edwards (I've had one rejected by PSA)
    Jim Thorpe
    Len Ford

I need the following who are impossible on cards:

    Charles Bidwell
    Joe Carry
    Pete Henry

George Preston Marshall (may be possible - I had one on a Redskins 66 Philly team card that was rejected by PSA and JSA)
    Paddy Driscoll

    Jay,

Sorry - been busy. I'll respond to your PM tonight. The final price was....drumroll....$1k! It was more than I wanted to spend, but it's a pop 11 and one of the toughest autographs to find on a card.

Only 17 more to go!! I just wish the Edwards and Jordan were good....

congrats. thats one tough card to track down.

for everyone else i have redone some scans on my favre master set. take a look and let me know what you think. Scans through 1991 are new there after are old. Any advise on them would be appreciated. I have a guy here at work that is anal about scanning and he thought some could use a little work with contrast. However, with all the cards that i have to scan i would prefer a more streamlined approach. Right now i have made forms for my scanner to hold the slabs at a fixed place which allows me to save a scan profile in my software and have everything perfect every time with out resizing.

    Reese,

I saw the Thorpe/Payton auction. I agree - why would anyone want to pay for a "Sweetness" signature. Plus, I think the Thorpe auto was sloppily cut/centered. I need Thorpe for my set, but I'd never pay crazy money for that card.

I was reading the auction description for an auto'd card that Booster-at-Coolstuff is selling and it seems that he's a little bitter towards the grading companies:

"This signed card was obtained IN-PERSON and is guaranteed to pass the test of any self-proclaimed "expert" you choose to waste your money upon...most of whom don't even remember Don Bass."

What's funny is that I bought a Henry Jordan and Em Tunnell from him 3 or 4 years ago and both were rejected by PSA. He refunded my money, but ranted about the auto authentication business.

    << <i>Reese,

I saw the Thorpe/Payton auction. I agree - why would anyone want to pay for a "Sweetness" signature. Plus, I think the Thorpe auto was sloppily cut/centered. I need Thorpe for my set, but I'd never pay crazy money for that card.

Yeah it could have been centered much better. There is plenty of room for the "J" in Jim and also they may have been able to move it up a little bit and get the "1951" inscription. I'm really sick of seeing these awful cuts.

    Reese,

I think that he buys bulk auto collections for various auctions and then resells on E-Bay. I think he's an honest seller, and his previous rant was because the collections he buys are authenticated by PSA and/or JSA and when the individual cards are authenticated then the auto's are sometimes rejected.

To be honest, I think it's a fair complain and it's something that we've discussed before on the boards.

I just can't see why the cut is so bad when there appears to be space to have centered the auto. My 4 year old could have done a better job.

How hard would it be to modify the card design to fit the cuts?
(evidently thinking is not part of the job description)

Drumroll please.... Attached are scans of the Link Lyman plus a signed 1955 Bowman Tom Fears - which is by far the nicest Tom Fears auto that I've ever seen. What's even better is that the auto didn't cost me a thing! I used my my $41 E-bay rebate to buy it!

    Enjoy.
