<< <i>I would just like to take this moment to welcome back one of the original "Fab Five" of the 72 Topps Registry.
Erik Jarvi has asked PSA to reinstate his deleted 72 Topps set (The EJ Collection - #8 Current Finest) and has once again started upgrading. For those of you who've recently joined the 72 registry - there were 5 of us that completed the set around 6 - 7 years ago - Erik Jarvi, Mike Castaldi, Neil Downey, Carlos Aponte and myself. The pop report looked A LOT different at the time with most pops in the single digits and teens in PSA 8/9. And the cards that were considered tough were much different than today. We had great comraderie and had a lot of fun building and helping each other out.

Welcome back Erik!
Has anyone talked to Carlos recently? Just wondering how he's doing.
It appears that the 72 group is a solid bunch of guys. I really missed working on this set and it also appears to be a lot easier to upgrade compared to 3 years ago.
Good luck to all of you.
Best,
Erik

I don't actually know you, but lots of us have gotten together and helped each other. Great group of guys!
Unfortunately, I'm going to be selling off my set within the next couple of months....but, it's only because I'm trying to generate some funds to reinvest in cards.
My collection budget is limited right now due to some budgetary constraints that I've forced on myself to pay off mortgages and credit card bills.

Well, after another disappointing group of cards, it looks like I done with PSA. All the OPC's came straight out of the pack and I scanned them with a 10x loop and they're perfect. Unfortunately, the grader doesn't agree. I think I might have to talk to PSA about these. I hope Frank had better luck with his OPC's. The Topps at the end were from a stack I found in my card room, don't know where/when I got them, but they graded better than the pack-fresh OPC's.
Sorry to hear about the rough grades, joemaggio. If I may ask, how many packs did you open to put together this sub? My experience with OPC packs from this era (1972 & 1973), is that you're lucky to get one mint card per pack, with most being in the NM-MT range. The 72s are also tougher than the 73s, IMO, as you are more likely to get that one mint 1973 OPC card per pack.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I opened 20 OPC packs. I'll post some scans when they arrive. These cards looked better than any OPC's I've seen from that era (OK, I haven't seen a whole lot of them through a 10x loupe). If I can't get 9's or 10's straight from the pack, there's no point in throwing any more money away on grading.
I think the fact that the Topps cards in this submission were all 8's and 9's shows that I know what I'm looking at - and the OPC's were better than the Topps. I wonder if they decided to grade them down because of the rough edges?
I think I'll just take my money to a casino... at least I understand why it disappears there.
Joe, you probably got someone who is grading tougher due to the 'rough edges' common on the OPC cards. That's wild. Sorry about the beating there....I'm sure that PSA will let you send them back in for 'review' for some .5 bumps though.

There's no doubt that OPC issues are much tougher than Topps when it comes to pulling mint cards straight from the pack. I've submitted many 72 & 73 OPC to PSA for grading and have found that they do not penalize for the rough cut per se, but that very few of these issues seem to grade out mint in any case, though I've had better luck with the 73s, having gotten a couple PSA 10s on those (with the rough cut). The packs I bought from bbce (if that's where you got yours) were pretty tough going in the way of getting mint cards for grading, especially since you're fortunate to get 1-2 NM-MT to Mint cards per pack in the first place, but I've had some better luck elsewhere. I believe one of the reasons that these sets are not more popular among collectors is because of how difficult it is to pull mint cards, though the prices realized certainly don't currently reflect that, making these sets very undervalued, IMO.

I did a little better, but not as well as I would have liked. I actually opened up 3 boxes (108 packs) and this submission was the 100 best cards from the 250 or so gradeable ones. The HOF'ers that were hammered were sliders compared to the commons, but I figured if I got the grades on those, it would help get me closer to NOT taking a complete OPC bath on this venture...

I am not addicted to the 72's yet (73 is my addiction) but I decided to gauge my eye for the 72's. So here is my first large submission from the Nov/Dec special, all but one card came from a raw set I picked up on Ebay last year. Just thought I would share the results.
Thanks for the Welcome, I guess I am new when it comes to posting. I don't think many days have gone by since sometime in 2001 that I have not glanced at the posts on these forums.
I am not 100% sure if I want to climb this mountain of a set. I did pick up a lot of about 150 PSA 8's a few weeks back and less the duplicates I would guess about 35-38% on my way. Where is the point of no return? or am I past that already
<< <i> Where is the point of no return? or am I past that already >>
If you want to scoure ebay everyday looking for cards, figure you have a 2 year plus journey in front of you without paying stupid prices. I went almost two years getting my set to 99+%. It took me 8 months to find the last 6 cards. (all in PSA 8 or better)
it will always be a marathon and not a sprint..........the journey can be fun.

If you've been checking out the boards since 2001 then you've seen a lot of different 72 guys come and go. Its a great set and a lot of fun to build - but...
As Jami says - the key is not paying stupid prices. If you're willing to buy PSA 8 and PSA 9 lots and then sell off the dups yourself your overall costs will generally be less. Because down the road - just about every one sells. And as with any kind of "investment" - its nicer to get more or at least what you paid - than a lot less.... Patience will help you do that.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on with the 72's at PSA lately but I don't like it. My personal collection stock of gradeable 72's is dwindling, but I found 5 more good ones to send in with my last 84 Donruss sub back in Dec. I had a Munson and 4 commons (2 in the high series). I had figured no worse than all 8's, with maybe a couple of 9's on the commons. The Munson ended up with a 7, the 2 high's with 8's which was ok, but the other 2 commons got 6's. Again... heavy examination under a bright light with 10x loups yielded no glaring issus that would have knocked these down to 6's. Centering was within 9 standards and corners were no worse than 8 standards. And, the HOF/Rookie issue is still bugging me. The Munson 7 looks almost identical to the two 8 commons. Reminds me of my Ryan 7 that I originally thought had a shot at a 9, yet yielded only a 7 on two attempts. I bet it would get a 7.5 now, but I doubt I will send it in just on principle.

Frank - I have 5 raw sets, of which 3 of them are pretty nice. Of those 3, the best one has plenty of NM-MT (and apparently Mint) cards. The 2 sets that are lesser then my top set are probably EX-MT to NM with some NM-MT sprinkled in. Every month or so I go through those 3 sets and pick out between 20 and 30 sharp and well centered cards to submit. It may cost a little extra in return shipping to do the subs 20 or 30 card at a time, but I've heard a lot of bad stories about 100+ or 150+ card subs from the same year getting inconsistent grades.
Sorry if this is not permitted in your thread, but I'm looking for a few raw NM-MT cards from the 1972 set.
I'm looking for the puzzle back cards of I think Yaz and was it Seaver ? I need two to complete the Yaz puzzle, and I don't have any of the Seaver (or whoever it was on the other puzzle). I'm also looking for a few award cards, i.e. commissioners and a few others.
If anyone has any for sale, please reply to this message. Thanks.
There were 4 puzzles total in the 72 set - Yaz, Torre (5th Series)- cards 552, 554, 556, 558, 560, 562, 564, 566, 568, 570, 572, 574, Seaver and Oliva (6th Series) - cards 694, 694, 696, 698, 700, 702, 704, 706, 708, 710, 712. There are some fairly tough NM-MT cards to find centered in the bunch (Santo In Action, Rose In Action, Carew In Action, Murcer In Action, Foli In Action and Bonds In Action).
More than likely - if people on this forum are holding any of them in that condition - they're headed to PSA for grading - hoping for the PSA 8 or PSA 9. Most of the guys on this forum have available cards that they bought as NM-MT for their sets that turned out to be NM or EXMT and those are probably easier to shake loose.
Just my thoughts...

Turns out that the grades I posted the other day are not visible on the status page anymore, and were never supposed to be seen. Many submitters saw grades that night, only to find out now that some of those grades are changed. I have not seen mine again as of yet, but I sure hope none of them change (for the worse). What they are saying in the other forum is that those grades were not supposed to be shown yet because the senior grader had not reviewed them yet. Dont you just love glitches?
Very interesting. I would be interested in knowing the final grades and how they compared to the ones you originally saw. I had a 1900 Copes Golfer card originally assigned a grade but later voided by a senior grader due to the card flaking. It ended up ungraded. I would have been satisfied with a PSA 1 or 2.........I've seen plenty worse than mine in PSA 1 holders.
Probably a really cost effective plan. 7's generally cost between 1/2 to 1/4 of what an 8 would cost you because there are A LOT of people trying to complete this set in PSA 8 or better. And by and large - a 7 can still be a VERY nice looking card.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I was expecting the o/c cards (wanted to complete my set) but the 2 PSA 5's!! The #757 Cardenal was a great looking card to.
The #303,661, & 681 were cards I assumed would be outside shots at 8's. PEPITONE got a 9. Go figure.....

I just hope that they don't rip my Santorini and Kendall sitting there in the hallowed halls of PSA. Please give me a break Joe!

It definitely seems like PSA has clamped down and the pendulum has swung back towards tougher again. My 71 Submissions have been coming back almost entirely PSA 7 the last few submitted.

outerbankyank on eBay!
I am not addicted to the 72's yet (73 is my addiction) but I decided to gauge my eye for the 72's. So here is my first large submission from the Nov/Dec special, all but one card came from a raw set I picked up on Ebay last year. Just thought I would share the results.
For me the 73's are easier to judge.

Frank,
Thanks for the Welcome, I guess I am new when it comes to posting.
Regards,
Jami

If you've been checking out the boards since 2001 then you've seen a lot of different 72 guys come and go. Its a great set and a lot of fun to build - but...
As Jami says - the key is not paying stupid prices. If you're willing to buy PSA 8 and PSA 9 lots and then sell off the dups yourself your overall costs will generally be less. Because down the road - just about every one sells. And as with any kind of "investment" - its nicer to get more or at least what you paid - than a lot less.... Patience will help you do that.

How about adding the CU board name and the set or sets (just the 72's) that go with the person.
Added the ones I know on the sets. Now let's go bid on some 72 topps . Diamondman

I was expecting the o/c cards (wanted to complete my set) but the 2 PSA 5's!! The #757 Cardenal was a great looking card to.
The #303,661, & 681 were cards I assumed would be outside shots at 8's. PEPITONE got a 9. Go figure.....

All-time favorite athletes:
Steve Sax, Steve Garvey, Larry Bird, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Andre Agassi, Karch Kiraly, Wayne Gretzky, Ichiro Suzuki, Andres Galarraga, Greg Maddux.
"Make the world a better place... punch both A-Rods in the face (Alex Rodriguez and Andy Roddick)!"
I've sent many #757 & 787 and only wish I got back an eight. If you don't need those for your set I'm definatly interested!
Dwayne

Sorry if this is not permitted in your thread, but I'm looking for a few raw NM-MT cards
from the 1972 set.

Thanks for the numbers. I think I'll pursue the Seaver and Torre puzzle's in 7's and just crack them open.
Probably a really cost effective plan. 7's generally cost between 1/2 to 1/4 of what an 8 would cost you because there are A LOT of people trying to complete this set in PSA 8 or better. And by and large - a 7 can still be a VERY nice looking card.
