Great looking cards. I've always liked the Thomson and Vic Power cards and the Bailey is really nice. Gives you a great look at the curve of the stands at the Polo Grounds.

That Bailey is incredible! I think the '56 Reds might have been using some PED's. There are 3 maybe 4 cards from their team with pretty big arms, none bigger than Klu.
I would be happy with any 9 from that year. I only received one, a Dean Stone pop 2, in all of the subs I sent.

Thanks, guys. I'm really having a lot of fun building this one. Unlike my past Registry sets (I've yet to register this one, by the way.) I am not so much concerned with the number on the flip or even my own sub results. I've been searching mainly for high quality raw cards that suit my taste and budget. If they don't grade as high as I expect, that's ok by me. I've also bought lots of graded cards, but now with an eye toward centering and clarity (i.e. beauty) and not grade. I much prefer buying high-end 6's and 7's than forking over the extra cash for 8's. There's nothing wrong in trying to move up the Reg. ladder, but with this set I have to be practical. The approach has given me a better appreciation for each card.

The Bailey is my only 9 so far. It looked really nice in the eBay scan (a mere $15.00) but when I got it in hand I was blown away. Still, I NEVER expect 9's with this set. With PSA's recent 5- and 6-dollar specials I've been able to get my cards graded cheaply and quickly. I have a 57-card 1957 sub ready to go and will still need about 80 or so cards to finish her off.

I have needed three cards forever. I really havent looked, and don't plan on buying the Mantle just yet. I still need 92,95,407. I would really like to find a decent 92 and 407 and then just wait on the perfect Mantle and pull the trigger. I had planned to get one at last year national but that whole trip fell thru. I would sell that Bailey and but a nicely centered 7 and use the money to fill some holes. I sold my only 9 to the great Frank E. and he was kind enough to send me his 8 along with the check. A very nice check. I don't know the pop on the Bailey, but I thought I remember seeing one sold for alot just recently.

Dave, I've thought about selling Bailey and may eventually do so. I just have to learn to not be so emotionally attached to the cards.

The grades just popped for my latest sub (March Collector's Club Special). The incredible thing is that the cards were logged in at PSA just yesterday. One business day for a 64-card sub. Not too shabby.

I am VERY pleased with the results. These cards were not as high grade as those in my last sub that yielded (1) 9, (1) 8.5, and (16) 8's. I was expecting a bunch of 6's and 7's with an outside shot at a few 8's. Yet, the sub yielded (12) 8's and (1) 8.5, which was really a nice surprise. Plus, every card got slabbed and there were no qualifiers.

    Here they are:

    Brett,
where are you getting all of the nice raw? I know how tough PSA has been grading lately and you are still knocking down great grades. They hammered my 56 sub and I was expecting grades like yours. Great job!!! Any doubles??

    Dave,

Sorry, but all my doubles have ended up in a second set that I'm trying to sell.

Here are the sellers with whom I've had the best success buying raw '57's:

eBay seller "jhb4crds." Jim usually undergrades his cards, which are all reasonably priced with BIN or Best Offer. Examples include Whitey Ford listed as Ex-mt+ (got PSA 8), Aparicio Ex-mt (8), Rocky Bridges Ex-mt (7), and Windy McCall Ex-mt (7). I've yet to have one of Jim's cards come back from PSA with a grade that was lower than it's raw listing. I've already bought most of his better cards, but there are still some left.

eBay seller "bsugarman." His grading is not as consistent as Jim's, but I've been wildly successful with MANY of Barry's cards. Every card that I've bought from Barry has been described as Nm and all were reasonably priced. Nearly all of his cards that I've sent to PSA have come back as 8's and my only 9 (Ed Bailey) was purchased raw from him. I've had a couple get 6's, but if I played the crack-and-resub game, I'll bet they could end up as 8's, too. A couple of his cards had small wrinkles or scratches that kept me from submitting them. To be fair, the flaws were tough to see and I'll bet that Barry simply missed them.

eBay seller "triplesssinc." Another very consistent grader. I haven't bought as many raw cards from this seller, but have had great success with those that I did.

eBay seller "ichabodscollectibles." I've bought a few "middle series" cards that he listed as Ex. They looked great and got 6's and 7's from PSA.

Mickey's Sports Cards: Always reliable. I've had only a handful of disappointments among the hundreds of raw (not all 1957) cards I've bought from them. Nearly all of their "Nm" raw came back as 8's (Duke Maas, Jim King, Bob Rush, and a few others that escape me at the moment.).

Burbank Sports Cards: I took a chance recently and bought (6) fairly cheap cards that they listed as Nm. Buying from "Burbank" is always a risk since they provide only stock photos. Three of the cards were too poorly centered for me to submit, but three others fared very well. Lew Burdette and Don Bessent each got 7, while Saul Rogovin got a 6.5. By the way, I buy from their non-eBay web site (burbanksportscards.com) and always get excellent service.

Powaysportscards.com: The few cards I've bought from Larry all graded 8. However, there are currently only 1 or 2 '57's listed on his website, so we'll have to keep checking periodically for new additions.

I hope you find this info helpful.

P.S. Don't let ANYONE else know about this. image

1957 Topps is one my favorite issues! I had to check out this thread. Currently collecting only Mays, Banks & Aaron and the 1957's are the hardest to find centered!!!!! Here is my Mays. Still looking/saving for Banks and Aaron.

An incredible example of one of the best cards in the set.

Brett - if you are thinking about selling the Bailey, IMO now is a great time to do so. Several of the top registry guys are active right now and I know of at least two who need it. How far along are you with the set?

Quickjam - in the four plus years I've been collecting this set, I've yet to see a dead centered Mays, Banks or Aaron in 8 or above.

Hope everyone is making good progress on their sets. I've been waiting and waiting for the right cards to come along but no luck as of late. I hope this changes soon with the start of baseball season.

Did anyone get that very nicely centered 407 in PSA7 off ebay last night?
I had a snipe set above VCP but it was worth more. Someone got a great looking 7.

Very nice cards Keith and everyone. I do have a few that I need to scan as I have updated my set recently. I did pick up a #92 Vernon in PSA8 for way under my set snipe. There happened to be a few on ebay all around the same time. I lost one with a bid about $50 and then won there better centered copy for $35. Go figure. I am now down to only needing two. #407 and #95. Good new is they are always available, and the bad news is they are costly. I still plan on getting the Mantle in PSA 8 and plan to sell off alot of extras and some 58's too. I still think it would be best if I purchased it in person at say the National or something like that. I will probably start looking for the 407 in PSA7 and just go from there. I am in no hurry to complete the set. I have many upgrades I plan on doing and dont plan to sell and have alot of other sets and projects that keep me busy. Scans to follow Saturday of a few new ones.

Just because you guys can feel my pain - pauljas continues to buy every '57 off of Ebay and then jack up the price the same day as he resells it. I think he even uses the same picture from the old listing.

He marks up the card about 75% over what he paid and then calls it rare and stupendous. Unbelievable!

Not illegal but I find it very distasteful...<Sigh>

To illlustrate your point, he recently landed a '57T Bailey in PSA 9 o/c, off the bay for $18 and change. Days later he's trying to sell it for $50 via BIN / BO. No takers. Big surprise! Now he's lowered it to $43. I was thinking of messing with him and offering him what he paid for it. Just to be ornery . . .

It is pretty interesting. He has listed tons of 57s this week and stated he is selling his entire collection. He is still bidding on auctions, but perhaps is a little less aggressive. I don't know - perhaps the collectors will win out on this one!!!!!

I am so happy that I got the George Crowe PSA 8 from Prewarcardcollector the other night! Pauljas has about 6 for sale and I stayed strong and didn't buy from him!

    Dave,

I still collect 57s! I am closing in on 75% with a GPA slightly north of 7. Currently I am trying to get some nice PSA 8s. Just upgraded my Gene Stephens from a PSA 5 to a PSA 8. I bought the PSA 5 raw and had it graded. Sooo disappointed with the 5. Glad to upgrade on that one!

I have decided to start the set and have picked about 15 or so, all PSA 7. Not opposed to 6's but I am concentrating on centering rather than corners on this set. If anyone has any to sell, please pm me.

SS Dawgs welcome and good luck. I have always loved this set and once I started collecting it I was more attracted to the simple style and great photos. Alot of time period photos and not much action, but it has its place as one the the best in my opinion.

Absolutely stunning cards all. I don't collect it as a set but it is one of my favorites. I would love to add a nice Aaron, Mantle, Williams and Clemente to my collection someday. Here is my Mays. I plan on crossing it at some point. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy looking at all these great cards.

    Hey All!

Glad to read through some of this thread....

I'm close-ish to finishing my 68T and just started on the 57T! Love the portraits/layout of this cool set.

Looking for PSA 8+ and I have a few cards already.

In a little while, I'm gonna get more serious with this set and actively start adding to it!

    Any pointers?

    Thanks!

I'm open to anyone wanting to sell some 1957Ts PSA 8 or better. I already have 30ish cards or so (all commons except for 1). Lemme know! Thanks!

Yesterday, I traded a huge quantity of modern junk for a '57 Kluszewski. It is graded by CSA, who claims it's a 10 Gem. CLEARLY, no chance of that if cross-graded (no 10s ever and only 14 9s), but it really is very nice and I have measured it both with a ruler and with jruler on scan and there is no trace of trimming. I also took out my 10x loupe and compared the cuts to some other raw '57s I have, and again, I'm as sure as I can be with my untrained eyes that it's legit.

Thinking about shelling out the money to get it regraded by PSA since it's super low population and SMR says a 9 books 2500 (!). BUT, thought I'd put out feelers here first to see if anyone wants it and also I'm sure there are a lot of folks a lot more expert in these who can also give an opinion on it.

Here's a scan of front. I don't know what I did of scan of front and back, but I do have it up at Ebay if you want to see both sides.

    You can PM me. Thanks

That 57 Klu actually looks nice. I am a bit worried about the top edge. If you own the card and are not trying to get it into a psa holder you are nuts. Crack it out and go from there.

i always am nervous that it will come back a 6 and i will turn into the incredible hulk. also only have the one card to grade and it's so pricey when you just do one. might anyway!

You could try a crossover with a minimum grade of 8 or 9 and see what happens...good luck it looks really nice.

You should rejoice if it came back a 6! In that holder, more likely an EOT and if you're lucy, Auth. I doubt in a hundred years it will ever sell for what you're asking.

I am not Lucy. So, that should settle that.
