This is primarily aimed at those of you who have posting numbers in the thousands, but by no means do I want it to be limited to them.
As I read these forums I notice that many of you despite being in different parts of the country know each other very well. You know who to ask when you need an answer. You know who might be interested when you see a unique coin. You know other peoples sense of humor and their hot buttons as well. Basically you are all one big family (slightly disfunctional without a doubt, but still a family )
I want to ask you (if I'm not being to forward) to let myself and others who are new here, know who you are in numismatics. Kind of a "Who's Who in the U.S. Coin Forum if you will.
1. How long have you been a numismatist?
2. What would you consider your specialty to be (if any)
If you care to add anything else about yourselves feel free.
As for me, I am a 43 yr old business owner (Insurance), been interested in coins all my life but never really got into it until September 2003. So far I have specialized in paying too much for coins and knowing too little about the coins I have (at least I'm honest). I'm married for 14 years and have two boys, 11 and 13 who are gaining interest in coins as they see me reading the books and constantly on the internet.
I look forward to getting to know you.
Thanks!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

For my biographical particulars, I would direct you to my eBay bio page (there's a link to it below). I put a lot more stuff on my eBay "me" page than most folks do.
As to most folks knowing each other well, it's mostly a product of spending a lot of time here and buying, selling, and swapping with one another. Also a few of us manage to meet in person occasionally at national shows. I pretty much stick to shows in the Southeast, within 350-400 miles of where I live (in the SE corner of the GA coast). Since I am only a part-time coin dealer and earn my living in another industry (hotel/resort), I don't get to do the shows as much as I would like- usually only once or maybe twice a year. The Florida United Numismatists (FUN) show every January is one I do pretty regularly.
Nice to "meet" you.
As for me, I'm 18, I am a Computer Network Engineering Technology Major at a local Community College (Though I've yet to actually start classes' ) I have been collecting since December 2003, though I collected for a month or two (Though not very seriously) the summer of 2000... My specialty without a doubt is Capped Bust Half-Dimes, though I am also a collector of Mercury Dimes, I am much more knowledgable about CBHDs than Mercs... A little discussed topic here... but, there is a growing community of us HD nuts here

I’m a 29 year old Science Teacher. I have a coin business on the side. I deal primarily in Lincoln cents in the $50-$500 range, although I’ve handled many in the $500-$3000 range. My business has been open for a year and a half. I’ve been a coin collector since I was four. I’ve been deep into coin collecting for about ten years.
I'm proud to say that my wife collects coins. She's into colorfully toned ones. We currently have no children.

I've been bitten by the coin collecting "bug" since 1970. I really don't consider myself to have any specialties, I'm more of a true grassroots collector. I do lean toward Lincoln cents, errors and varieties, U.S. Mint issues, circulation finds and learning as much as I can about minting techniques, how coins are made both now and throughout Mint history and the processes behind which errors and varieties occur.
As for circulation finds, my bank job is a big help obviously, although I was forced to find another job recently at a different bank, and the opportunity for circulation finds is not nearly as good as it was.
I have learned a tremendous amount here from a bunch of very kind, knowledgeable people. One of the things I learned when I registered here (and on the old boards) was how much I thought I knew, and how little I really did know. I'm still learning and hope in some small way to be able to help others when I can, and hopefully I have. You can't beat this place!
<< <i>There's a little hard-to-see link at the bottom of the page that says "View Member Listing", and that's a sort of who's-who, though probably heinously outdated and not long on details. Most people probably don't even know it's there.

You're welcome.
I have been collecting for nearly fifty years ( yes I started young! ) and US coins since 1996 when I bought my first coins in Guilford CT, a mistake, I got hooked.
I have stated selling on eBay and this will expand time allowing.
I have two children Andrew (22) working in London and Becky at Uni.
Since my divorce I have more time to make a mess with coins everywhere!

I'm a 43 year old collector. I live in east central Indiana and work in the admission dept at the local hospital. I have been a numismatist for 38 years and a collector for 32 years. Unlike most once I started I never stopped or took a break from coins. I collect a little bit of everything both US and Darkside My main interests in US is the early pre-steam press coinage by die variety, especially early large cents. (I lack five varieties of having a complete Draped bust set by Sheldon numbers. My draped bust set is the 23rd finest listed in the national census and my early date collection is 43rd finest in the census.) In darkside I collect by type. The entire world since 1860 no gold or NCLT. I am complete for over 90 countries. Other interests include French and German notgeld coins by Lamb numbers, 18th century English provincial token coinage, and I have been studying third part certification services and all of their holder varieties for the past five and a half years.

Isn't that the truth!!! It is amazing how it just gets real messy realllllllllll quick . . . and I always have to keep putting things up because of my curious jumping cats. Sure is a pain. I dream of my office someday (when we build our house) where I can just shut the door and leaves coins in all corners of the room!
As for who I am - I guess you would say that I am also a nobody with an eclectic choice for collecting coins, and don't know a whole lot about any of them.
For most of my life I specialized in small cents, 1857-1933. I've very nearly finished an XF-AU set with only a small number of holes left. I also collect Morgan and Peace dollars and am getting ready to start collecting choice AU (55/58) type.

What does a full time numismatist do?
I am not trying to start a slam fest, BTW. I am impressed by your credentials, especially at a rather young age. I am just interested in what you consider a full time numismatist.

I wouldn`t say I have a specialty in terms of being an " authority ". I do like Morgan Dollars ( though tring to move away from them as I`ve pretty much accomplished my main goals in the series. ) and Peace Dollars.
I'm very impressed with the younger crowd here and their focus on what they want to collect. I collect Morgan
Dollars (the most beautiful coin ever made!).

They are out there!!
I currently, sporadically work on collections of Major U.S. Type Coins, U.S. Half Cents, U.S. Large Cents, and British Conder Tokens. I also try to use a metal detector on occasion.
And I have a lot of fun here on the Forums

Collected as a kids with the Whitmans. Revised my interest in 1999 after the kids got out of school. I collect mostly Three Cent Nickel proofs (see my icon? ), Washington silver quarters (MS), Frankie FBLs, billion issues and commems, SBA proofs and keys dates/Lincoln varieties. Used to have a Lincoln set, but I auctioned that off.
Been around here from the outset. These boards are great!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I collect U.S. type coins and have collected a few series by date and mint and sometimes by die variety. I also collect Civil War and Hard Times tokens and 19th century presidential campaign medalets. I know a bit about everything in U.S. coins and tokens, but I'll let you decide if I'm "an expert." I "dabble" in U.S. medals, mostly pieces from the 19th century.
I'm now a full time coin dealer and part time author. My more recent writing has been in the political collectors' items field. Before I was selling coins and writing, I worked as an accountant, financial analyst, and speach writer for the CFO and CEO of a large life insurance company. I have a BS in accounting and an MBA, but I'm too much of a lose cannon to be a great corporate guy.
I lived up north for many years, but now live in Florida. I most take tables at shows and do want list work for people who are looking for specific items. Most all of the coins I sell are certified by NGC or PCGS. Almost all of the tokens that I sell are raw.
Born and raised in Oregon and have been married to the same lady for 30 years next month. Two grown boys, year wise, that are still living here in Oregon, 190 miles from us though. They are 29 and 23 respectfully. Outside of a couple of years in a place where it was Hot and Humid and 3 years in the Tacoma, Washington area Oregon has been home.
The only regret that I really have with Numismatics is that when I started a more diverse approach would have been taken. Concentration with only one series does not let you see the whole picture at all.
No occupation right at the moment...... Heck if I could swing it there probably would not be another occupation. Thirty eight years of work seems to be enough in my mind.
Forgot the other interest. It is these pieces of scrap metal.
Take Care All

Married 10 years, first child due next month. I started collecting in high school, took a
break, and have been serious for the last 6 years.
My focus is 1872 dated coins, and I also have been working on a US type set. I usually
get an urge to do something different with coin sets, and it keeps it fun. For example, I
have been trying to put a slabbed AU58 3 cent nickel set together (just because), and I
once tried to see how many different English monarchs I could assemble in a penny collection.
As far as LordM goes, boy can he spin a yarn. Sorry LM couldn't hold that back. I see LM as the Mark Twain of the forums. He could make chicken salad out of chicken s....omething. In all seriousness, he is a good guy, a great story teller and knowledgeable in many areas of interest.
In closing I would like to say how much I have enjoyed this forum. There are an awful lot of knowledgeable and respected members here. But I don't see kudos being given out to anyone just becaused they showed up. It is a system of earn as you go, and once again, rightfully so.
Have a Great Day!
Louis
Edit: Not crazy about Barber coinage but I've got a beautiful creamy white Barber 1903-O NGC MS63 Half that I bought for EF. I'd love to show all--if I could ever figure out how to post a picture(s).
