Repeatedly pointing out he’s employed in law enforcement then tells everyone how much of a laugh his friends at work will get from this thread.
Declaring many of the women in soccer are unattractive.
Declaring many women in the WNBA are extremely unattractive.
Asking everyone what Clint Eastwood or John Wayne would do.
Telling everyone that Clark, a woman, couldn’t make a good NCAA men’s team.
Admits he doesn’t watch the WNBA and has no interest in the league’s success then proceeds to offer up to 10K in a bet on a league that he doesn’t watch and has no interest in. Then proceeds to offer said bet for up to three straight years.

How does the phrase go again? Better To Remain Silent And Be Thought A Fool Than To Speak And Remove All Doubt.

Talk about rambling on lol. 😂

What comments did I make that you disagree with? Do you think Clark could make a division 1 men's team? Do you think sports fans think the women of the WNBA are good looking? Do you think the league losing millions every year is a lie? Do you think that die hard sports fans follow and watch the WNBA? What did I say that is wrong and be specific.

I’m not saying that I agree or disagree with any of it, I’m just saying it’s ok to not type out every thought that passes through your head lol. I will try to answer some of your questions though...

    1. It’s irrelevant on whether Clark could make a division 1 men’s team so it’s honestly pointless asking that question.
    2. Like ElMago’s quote in the comment before yours, beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder but, again, totally irrelevant to the topic in this thread, imho.
    3. I’m sure there’s actual data somewhere online that points out on whether the WNBA is losing money or not so I won’t argue on whether that is true or not.
    4. Here’s one that I honestly think that your seriously overlooking, just because you and your law enforcement buddies aren’t watching/starting to watch the WNBA, that doesn’t mean that other sports fans haven’t. Just like the answer to #3, the truth is out there where ticket sales have gone up considerably so to answer this question, Yeah, sports fans ARE watching these games more than previously. Defining if it’s actual “die hard sports fans” is also completely irrelevant when more fans in general now have more interest in that league in 2024. Again, those attendance numbers speak for themselves.

Too many people are getting caught up in trying to argue this topic when in reality both sides can be right in this situation. You can point out the WNBA’s history in recent years and how most fans really weren’t interested in that league. That would be true. You can also see how much has changed for the that league just from last season to this one with Caitlin Clark playing out her rookie season and how much of an impact she’s had on it which can also be true. The results speak for themself.

We had a thread over in the Sports Talk forum where someone pointed out Ice Cube had offered Clark 5M to go play a season in the Big Three league and there were some commenters saying she should accept that offer because she’ll probably not make that much money for her entire WNBA career. Some even speculated with including her offcourt endorsements as well and she literally crushed that 5M offer within a couple weeks with her Nike deal alone that was reported to be north of 20M.

The popularity of the WNBA has absolutely grown over this past year whether you want to agree or not and just because you and your friends haven’t started watching these games doesn’t mean many other fans haven’t as well because they have, you just keep feeling the need to argue against that truth for some reason.

I never said the popularity has not gone up. It can go up every year for the next decade and still lose millions annually and not be a sport the many people want to watch.

So just don’t watch it. Caitlin Clark going into the WNBA has been very beneficial for that league and I really just don’t get the point of repeatedly telling us all how much money the’ll keep losing. You just come off as someone with an axe to grind against either Clark herself or the WNBA as a whole.

I respond because other people are responding to my comments. If the comments end I would stop. When someone responds with a question or says something that I did not say of course I'm going to respond. This entire thread is baffling to me. Up until this moment I have never heard one person in my entire life that said they watched the league - not one. This includes my three daughters who are in their 20's, any of their friends, any of my neighbors, any of my buddies or their families, and over 100 coworkers.

If you consider the purpose of the OP, it's perfectly relevant. Someone paid a delicious sum of money for a basketball card, so they must have been rather impressed with its presentation.

On the other hand, suggesting that women's basketball would only be interesting if it was populated by fashion models and cover girls is quite disparaging.

When did I say it would only be interesting if it has great looking women? It's not popular and loses millions for many reasons. One of the reasons is the league has a lot of unattractive women. Even if every women was a 10 the league would still be losing millions but more men would watch it.

You didn't. I made a blanket statement attributable to those who do so while maintaining the attitude that a lack of attractiveness is seen as a negative for the league. Make of it what you will. Your comments speak of your own truth on the subject.

My comments are based on the numbers and reality. If you think men are not visual creatures than I suggest its time to put the crack pipe down. The horrendous appearances of most of the women in the league plus their insane take on our country are main reasons why sports fans won't watch it. Add in the lousy play and you have a failed league that loses millions every year and has been doing so for over two decades.

This fixation on the athletes’ “attractiveness” is puzzling. Somehow, as men we can watch male competitive sports without being attracted to the athletes. But suddenly if the athletes are women, we need to find them attractive to watch the sport? Doesn’t make much sense. 🤷‍♂️

I'm putting my foot in my mouth? I'm not the guy claiming the WNBA is a good league that lots of sports fans want to watch. I'm saying that a league that loses millions every season for over two decades is a bad league. If this was a men's league it would have folded many years ago. We all know why the league is still operating.

The arrogance and the buffonery is from the people who are upset because I'm stating reality. You are ignoring the data and common sense. The numbers are on my side and I stand by everything I said. If you want to bet me that the league makes a profit next year I'm in. Since I'm the guy putting my foot in my mouth you should be all over the bet.

Insulting me does not change the data. I have met lots of people like you in my life. People that get upset because they disagree with facts and get defensive but not ONE will ever back up their comments.

You just said 2 + 2 does not = 4. So men are not visual?. It also makes no sense why there are people going hungry and living in the streets. It also makes no sense that humanity consistently has wars and that there are bad people.

Lousy attractiveness plus lousy play plus a lot of the players hating our country = a failed league that loses money. If you were on the family feud and the question was - We asked 100 die hard sports fans why they don't watch the WNBA what would the top 5 responses be. Go ahead and name the top 5 Paul.

I’m not ignoring neither of them, i’m Just pointing out all of the additional irrelevant talking points that you’re adding to this discussion. This is such a weird flex to just be all in on hating that basketball league for whatever reasoning especially for a father that has three daughters.
For whatever reason you’ve chosen this hill and are willing to die on it, metaphorically speaking of course.

Also just an FYI, I’m pretty sure our mod here is a woman so you may want to factor that in when placing said foot in said mouth again. I’m out for good this time. 😎👍

I don't hate the league - I could care less if the league folds or becomes the top sport in America. In regards to me putting my foot in my mouth than bet me. When I encounter people who put their foot in their mouth I bet them. Obviously you won't because you have no confidence in what you're saying. Your using feeling over facts. Not sure what my daughters have to do with the fact that the league loses millions every year for over two decades. My daughters are strong intelligent women who don't get their feelings hurt over facts or opinions from other people.

I didn't watch any WNBA, I was busy cleaning my gun, watching football, drinking beer while my wife was in the kitchen cooking the duck that I keeled earlier in the morning hunting. She got mad cause I still had some blood & guts in my beard and my camoflauge hunting kit. I just picked it out with my special edition Rambo knife.

How was the duck, though? It requires a special kind of bullet to pick duck out of your teeth.

Nobody who I work with (250+people) watched it. Yes I actually asked. I stopped commenting on this thread but some people can't let it die. Also another poster tried comparing her to Jordan which is asinine. Jordan is one of the top three basketball players who ever lived. Clark is not even in the top 100,000 players. She would not make a division one men's hoops team. I have a buddy who could EASILY beat her in a one on one.

Comparing her to Jordan is crazy talk.

The rest of us normal dudes watched College Football, the NFL, the MLB playoffs and spent time with our family and friends. I tried to let this topic die but some of you can't. My take on the league is based on facts and the data. The defenders of this trash are basing their opinions on their feelings. It's not my fault the league loses millions every year going on two plus decades.

Slow down, while she is off to a historic start until she wins championships it's reach. She will be more like the Steph Curry.

You are close, but you messed up your list: Clark, Ohtani, and Wemby. Judge needs to start playing better in the playoffs.

So according to you an athlete has to be good looking for people to want to watch them play? Is Patrick Mahomes an adonis? Sure it helps with endorsements, that isn’t what Yankees70 said.

We are talking about women dude. Men watch sports and they don't care if their favorite male players are great looking or ugly. How they play the game is all that matters. Good looks will help a male athlete for marketing reasons.

Women athletes are completely different. One of the main reasons why the WNBA loses money is because most of the players and coaches are hideous looking and men don't want to watch ugly women doing anything, especially playing a lousy brand of sports. Dude seriously do you really need to be told this? This is common sense. Men are and will always be visual creatures. We like to look at beautiful women. We don't care how male athletes look because we are not attracted to men and we watch male sports because they are the best athletes on the planet. This is common sense stuff that I learned when I turned 14.

@Yankees70 You're just being ridiculous. The majority of women (and men) in any sport will not be beauty contest winners. The chances that uniformly good looks would happen to correlate with high level athletic ability are extremely slim. But it’s a total exaggeration to say that most WNBA players are “hideous looking.” Here’s the Indiana Fever team photo. Do most of them look like Victoria’s Secret models? Of course not. Certainly not close to hideous. Expecting more than that is just dumb.

LOL ok whatever you say. My coworkers and I see 3 or 4 average looking women and the rest are really bad looking. Thanks for proving my point. The tattoos are especially attractive. Nothing like ample tattoos on a women as a sign of femininity and beauty. A good high school men's team would defeat that team with no problem.

The main reason the league hasn’t been popular is that the style of play tends to be boring and the quality of play is somewhat lacking, especially on the fringes of rosters. The lack of available money creates a “chicken or the egg” situation where it is hard to attract the best talent and competent refs when there’s very little money to pay them.

The increased pace the Fever and a couple of other teams have adopted on offense is a step in the right direction.

A secondary reason is the league’s emphasis on identity politics which turns off many mainstream fans (myself included).

How pretty the players are is in my
mind a complete non factor, and your continued focus on it is the dumbest part of your argument.

I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong with regard to reasons some percentage of male sports fans are not interested in the WNBA. Even with the rise in popularity, I think, for many, it's a passing moment of interest and intrigue. However, the same question could be asked about the ABA and even the NBA as they both struggled financially... the NBA struggled for decades before the promotion & growth occurred that produced the modern league we see today.

I wouldn't try to predict this one myself. I think it could go either direction... back to obscurity, or onward to legitimacy. I think they will always struggle to maintain a broad base of male fans as they will have to compete with the NBA. You know.. unless someone comes along and says... Why does the WNBA game have to be the same as the NBA game and makes some changes which makes it more broadly appealing as a sport.

As far as looks.. and speaking for myself.. I don't know if models playing basketball would make any difference to me. While I'm not seeking out WNBA games to watch, I'm interested enough to tune in for a few minutes here and there... and the game is better overall, and I think the credit for that goes to the introduction of Clark and other talented players and the promotion of them by the league.

You are comparing the WNBA to the ABA? Dr Jr, Artis Gilmore, Rich Barry and others played in the ABA. I watched them as a kid. There's no comparison between the two leagues. The ABA had some of the greatest players that ever lived. There's not one player in the WNBA who is even in the top 100,000 players who ever lived.

There's two ways for the WNBA to make a profit. One is for millions of women who don't watch sports to start watching. Some of you are probably married. Do you see your wife buying season tickets and sitting around watching WNBA games multiple times a week? Sorry guys it's not happening. The other way is for men who love sports to start watching less NFL, College Football, and MLB games and to start watching some WNBA games. Again that's not happening for the many reasons I already discussed.

The WNBA will continue to be paid by the NBA or other corporate interests. If the league had to stand on its own two feet it would fold. The qualify of play is lousy and that can never be overcome.

I am comparing the financial aspects of the leagues during their inception and onward. I'm not trying to compare the quality of the game or individuals. I don't think that's relevant to whether the support can become popular and maintain it.

There's two ways for the WNBA to make a profit. One is for millions of women who don't watch sports to start watching.

The main impetus for profitability will be from media revenue. This is no different from the NBA. Eyes are indicative of dollars, but not always directly correlated. Sometimes it starts slow, but there is momentum right now. You are ignoring this...

Some of you are probably married. Do you see your wife buying season tickets and sitting around watching WNBA games multiple times a week? Sorry guys it's not happening.

My wife hasn't shown interest in many sports. She tolerates me watching baseball, but she's usually sitting next to me on her phone.

The other way is for men who love sports to start watching less NFL, College Football, and MLB games and to start watching some WNBA games. Again that's not happening for the many reasons I already discussed.

It's doesn't appear to be zero-sum as proven by the fact that there's more people watching WNBA games in 2024 and more people watching other sports you mentioned in 2024. One contributing factor could be the writers guild strikes in 2023.

The WNBA will continue to be paid by the NBA or other corporate interests. If the league had to stand on its own two feet it would fold. The qualify of play is lousy and that can never be overcome.

I expect the WNBA to be subsidized by the NBA for years to come, but be aware that the NBA is also profiting from the WNBA right now.

As for the quality of play, I think that could be overcome. It doesn't have to be the same game as the NBA, and it doesn't have to appeal to the same fans as the NBA.

  • Yeah, my wife will snuggle up close with the phone while I'm watching sports. She shows me photos. Suddenly, I'm not watching sports anymore. >:)

Attacking the messenger instead of the argument. I learned about this in philosophy 100. I showed my three grown successful intelligent daughters my messages and they agree with them. So does my wife who is also successful, intelligent, and independent. This is a message board dude. I attempted a couple of times to stop commenting but people want to keep the thread going so I will keep commenting when appropriate.

How did I disparaged the team? What did I say that is not true? One of the many problems with our country is ample people don't want to here facts on topics that they disagree with. They would rather put their heads in the sand and pretend things were different. Facts always triumph feelings.
