I was just posting over in the sports autograph section and my GOD what a difference from here! You can breathe over there. The sun is shining over there, and the forum members aren't like a starving school of piranha!
It's like walking through the gates of heaven over there compared to the dank dungeon full of demons in Hell itself over here.
Yeah, I saw that thread you replied to. The difference is the newbie OP actually listened to the advice and didn't try to act like the experts were wrong. You have about 16 hours left, you should spend it over there.

MANY times throughout history the "experts" have wound up being proved dead wrong. I'd be happy to elaborate on this for you with numerous examples, especially in the field of quantum physics.
Is this the fastest rise to 300 posts in the history of the forum? If so, I should have a special badge awarded to me for this distinction (and my head examined as well for expending the effort), and everyone who participated in the making of this historic thread should get one of these to commemorate this once in a lifetime, meteoric thread:

the people that know error coins said it was plated
you asked about it being silver
i'll say there is no way to tell if it is silver, gold, nickel, pewter, lead, steel, tungsten, titanium, ... under the plating
also note that no one said it was silver plated
it's a plated metal coin. any other shape discrepancies are moot it's 85% thinner? it's a plated metal coin that is 85% of what a cent is
oblong? still plated
there's your answer
What's very odd about it is that it was in a large box stored away and not handled for likely 50 to 60 years with some coins in white square holders and with other coins that were simply loose, mostly silver coins. This one was singled out for special treatment in being placed in a holder while the majority were not.
Also, this is most definitely a Lincoln Cent. A silver Lincoln cent that at a distance looks no different than any dime. That's what I thought it was when I first saw it, just another dime, until I looked more closely for the year and thought, "Wait a minute. This is a silver penny? From 1955? WTF?"
It's also about halfway between the size of a dime and a penny.
Now just about every other ten or so pennies I look at are the same size, the same shape, and the same thickness.
I'm sure there must be some minute variances for tolerance here and there, but for the most part, any two pennies out of hundreds here that I hold or sandwich together are about the same. But not this one. It's about 15% thinner than a LHC and not quite round, sort of like the Earth being oblate.
One edge looks odd. Like some of the pennies I've seen struck on dime planchets.
And again, if I take any dime or any copper LHC and sandwich this silver penny between them, it is halfway between the size of the dime and the copper LHC! As if it were the missing link, a halfway size between the two.
So, what I am going to do is take it to one of the metal specialists in my area who buy and sell precious metals and have them test it to see if it's silver through and through. If so, I imagine the next step is having it graded.

Yes! That’s how you stick it to forum members.
Why should they care, one way or another. They may be right or they may be wrong. Historically speaking so called experts have been wrong in every arena.
If they were wrong, I'm sure they're secure in their perceived expertise and certainly are not going to want their faith shaken in it.
We'll start with the metal. Silver through and through or clad in silver, or nickel, or mercury, or zinc, or etc.?
That's a start. If it's clad, they were right and there's no need to go further. If not, they were wrong and it gets sent for grading along with the metal analysis finding. Fairly straight forward.
Aside from it being Silver in color and appearing identical in hue, luster and chroma to a dime, the SIZE is markedly abnormal. I'd like to find out why. And why the coin was one of only 3 dozen other coins in holders rather than just being one among several hundred other loose coins in the box.
Coincidentally, all of the loose coins are of minimal value, but the ones that are in the square holder with the glassine windows are worth well into the hundreds of dollars, several into the 4 figure range according to ebay past sales of the last 3 months. Maybe there's a reason why this was included with them as being holdered. We'll see, starting with the composition of the metal.
I for one would be interested in seeing the results of this being sent in for grading. What service level would you select on the submission? Would you use PCGS, NGC or maybe USB?

Because whoever you inherited this from is as clueless about coins as you. Or, they just liked it. Go to eBay or Etsy or Youtube and you'll see many thousands of people with "RARE ERRORS!!1!" just like this.

He'll use CACG.

And I owe it all to my new Coinee friends!
I have officially entered the annals of the coin forum kingdom, as well as the ninth circle of Hell. Or is that the anals of the coin forum kingdom?
