The 2023-2024 NFL Playoffs Discussion

If Cleveland beats Houston this weekend are they the only team that can go into Baltimore and beat the Ravens?
Does Miami really have a chance with a depleted roster and sub zero temperatures in Kansas City?
Do the Cowboys keep their home record perfect against the Packers?

There are always upsets and road wins. Who has the best chance?
Pittsburgh running 70% of the time and upsetting Buffalo ?
Philly finally plays like last year?

Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins will not be available for the Houston game because of his hamstring injury.

Pittsburgh shouldn't be there but Mason Rudolph looks like Tom Brady compared to Picket and all they needed was a actual NFL QB so they beat Buffalo

Miami and KC is tough, both teams will let the other team hang around and eventually something will give and the game will be over with one winner, probably KC?

Cleveland beats Houston, Joe Flacco is a great story

Dallas beats Green Bay because they need to make it deep into the playoffs and lose again

Philly remembers how to play football and shuts down the fraudulent Baker Mayfield

Kansas City game is supposed to be ZERO degrees at kickoff and get to MINUS 9 during the game Saturday night.

The point spread has moved from MIA +3.5 to +4 in the last 24 hours, as well as the MIA moneyline from +158 to +175. I have a futures bet on KC to win the Super Bowl so am considering my strategy of how, or if even, to make any hedge bets along the way, or just hang tight until at least the next round.

I keep having flashbacks to another brutally cold playoff game at Arrowhead and "The Kicker Who Shall Not Be Named", with his 3 missed field goals, Steve Bono and his 3 INTs, and a 10-7 Chiefs loss to the Colts.

    @2dueces asked:
If Cleveland beats Houston this weekend are they the only team that can go into Baltimore and beat the Ravens?
--- I don't know if they're the only team that can beat the Ravens in Baltimore, the Colts did it and the Rams took them to OT. The advantage the Browns would have is that the team is familiar with the Ravens.
Does Miami really have a chance with a depleted roster and sub zero temperatures in Kansas City?
--- Miami certainly has a chance. Last week against Buffalo the game was close and turned on the punt return that in the whole scheme of things is a fluke in the NFL. It was one of only three from about 1,000 punts this season.
Do the Cowboys keep their home record perfect against the Packers?
--- Probably. The Packers aren't really that good and the Cowboys are different team at home.

There are always upsets and road wins. Who has the best chance?
--- The Rams, Eagles, Dolphins and Steelers. All on the road and all would probably be upsets.
Pittsburgh running 70% of the time and upsetting Buffalo ?
--- Running and defense could probably win that game, the weather could really affect passing.
Philly finally plays like last year?
--- Philly has looked like "toast" for a while but this is a new season, maybe they'll wake up.

Weather update from Buffalo for Sunday - "Forecasters say 1 to 3 FEET of snow with 60 mph wind gusts."
The NFL was talking about moving the game to the Cleveland stadium but no information on that yet.

Some interesting little sidenotes about the teams in the playoffs this season:
--- 3 of the franchises originated in Cleveland: Rams, Browns and Ravens. A 4th from another Ohio town, Portsmouth: Lions.
--- 2 of the franchises originated in Dallas: Cowboys and Chiefs.
--- Houston is the newest franchise, dating to 2002.
--- Green Bay is the oldest franchise, dating to 1919.
--- 4 of the franchises date to the 1930's: Lions, Steelers, Eagles and Rams.
--- 3 franchises started in the old AFL: Bills, Dolphins and Chiefs.
--- 2 franchises started in the old AAFC: 49ers and Ravens(by way of Cleveland).
--- 3 franchises started with a different name: Chiefs, Ravens, Steelers.
--- 2 franchise merged for the 1943 season, the Steelers and the Eagles, and were called the Steagles!! :p:#

Please add any other interesting factoids about who's participating this season.

I am a fan of three teams, the Patriots, Bucks and Eagles. The Patriots died during the regular season. The first game guarantees that one of my teams will make it to the second round. After that, I will need to find a new favorite for the playoff season.

If Baker Mayfield can play with any credibility, Tampa will win. If he can’t, the game is 50-50. The Eagles are headed for another era of “The same old Eagles.” They will be last or close to it and waiting for next year or the next decade, depending how pessimistic you are.

I am PO’d at the Peacock Network thing. I hope that the people who thought this up lose a bundle of money and are dissuaded from doing this ever again. A pox on Peacock. If they succeed, we will see more of this.

The Peacock thing wouldn't happen if the NFL wasn't so greedy. They get $110 million from Peacock if I read the article correctly. For me it's like Thursday night football didn't happen since I didn't see any of the games.

It’s not the Baker is bad. The trouble is he’s hurt and can barely run or throw. The Eagles’ quarterback, Hurts, is supposed to be hurt too, so it might be a battle of second string quarterbacks. In that case the Philly offense line should make the difference.

Baker is average for a starting QB in the NFL, he is short for a starting qb and you are correct he gets injured a lot. It is never easy to win the playoffs with an average qb - okay Ravens had Flacco and made it a couple times, but you need an elite qb to consistently succeed in the playoffs - Brady, Mahomes...... Mayfield has good games, but he has more bad games than good............. He does have heart, but.............

I'd be curious to see if Hurts can't go or is has to sit down during the game and thus if Mariota can rise to the occasion. Mariota's first game in the NFL in 2015 was a perfect rating at 158.3 4 TD's no ints, it has been average overall since then - fairly similar to Mayfield. Who does TB have as 2nd? Philly could win that game with Mariota.

This is just my thoughts or wishful feelings about week 1 playoffs
I believe Cleveland has a legitimate chance of going into Baltimore and beating the Ravens where I don’t think Houston could.
Buffalo can definitely beat Kansas City again especially playing at home.
That all could change if Miami beats Kansas City.
I doubt Miami beats Baltimore and Cleveland would still be a tough out for Buffalo or any team for that matter.
    Week 2
    Cleveland at Baltimore
    Kansas City at Buffalo

The game should have been moved to Cleveland as originally discussed. To me, it makes more sense to keep the day consistent than the location. As a neutral site in Cleveland it would be a three hour drive for both fan bases. Now the winning team is cheated out of a day in the preparation for the next game. I know that doesn't seem like much but at this point of the season every day is important for these guys who are always nursing something.

A question for @2dueces: will the proposed new Buffalo Bills stadium be far enough inland to alleviate this lake effect snow?? I live within a few miles of the lake myself and 5-10 miles inland there's often minimal snow when the "snow-belt" gets hammered with 15"+ sometimes.

For members who aren't familiar with lake effect snow, it's a real phenomenon that only happens in a few places world wide.

I've never been sold on Watson, he has a tendency to hold the ball way too long and take some tough hits, he did not improve during his time with the Texans. It looked good on the stat sheet but it built up and now after sitting for a year, he can't get healthy, so I am not sure he will ever be top level again.......

absolutely, we luved him when he played, and we more so now. Guy can coach. But give credit to Caserio, he was behind it all and now they have a great tandem at qb and coach. This is why the Tejanos pursued Caserio so hard for a few years until he was available.

Oh my goodness Tejanos just scored again while I was typing.....
