Your most hated popular coin

What is a coin series that you dislike or hate that other people love collecting?

For me, it would have to be Buffalo nickels. I was never a fan of the Indian head design and I don’t like to collect coins that aren’t silver. I also don’t like the fact the nickels don’t have a rim marks on them. Something always just seemed off about the design to me. Also most of the Buffalo nickels are dateless or near dateless. They always just seemed ugly

Well what’s yours?

Sure ain't Buffs! I think they are the all time best design on US coins.

I'm not a fan of the Roosevelt dime.

Yeah those are definitely ugly coins!

Funny ive never collected any nickels. I dont like the metal and find it ugly. Also very corrosive.

    Zincoln Memorials

A design that lived well past it's time in my opinion, and made in such a way that any exposure the regular travels of commerce is likely to find it starting to corrode within a decade or so, They make for the best parking lot finds though.

Also, probably the least useful, and most wasteful coin in American history, which makes it even uglier to me

I'll go along with pursuitofliberty on this one. I think I've changed my mind from Roosies to Zincolns. What a useless (and poisonous) coin. The shield design ain't bad-its too bad that isn't on the Roosevelt dime reverse.

That’s a tough one to answer. When I build a type set, I’m forced to buy a few coins that I normally would never buy or collect. But when they come in I’m usually like, hmmmm...these are actually pretty nice.

Counterfeits. There are lots of counterfeits sold from overseas and within our own country. It's amazing how popular these can be.

I don't consider counterfeits to be actual coins.

Your most hated popular actual coin

People will have different ideas of what to include. For example, some people don't consider Brasher Doubloons or patterns to be coins either.

Since we aren't limited to actual coins, I hate those 3" coasters made to look like replica coins. ;)

I don’t think I hate any coin series but most I’m disinterested in other than having a type sample. The ones I do really like would be pretty much anything minted in the era of classic gold, Morgans (though I don’t collect them now), Mercs, and WLH.

The rest just don’t interest me much beyond a type.

    Viva la difference!

I'll probaby get a lot of disagrees for this, but I don't like standing liberty quarters. Don't get me wrong, the artistic design is wonderful. However, the technical design is awful. 80%+ of the surviving population is a ghostly silouette with a barely legible date. Why are there 11 stars on the SLQ? Because 2 of the 13 immediately rub off.

Giving this topic some serious thought, I conclude that I do not 'hate' any of our coins. There are some I like less than others - i.e. prezzy bucks, SBA's and parking lot zincolns ;) - but I have some of each. So much easier to list those I really like - WLH's, Mercs, Buffs and Morgans.... And the top of the heap are the gold coins - incuse Indian gold and the one ounce gold coins....Love the big gold. Cheers, RickO

From the 19th century - the Nickel Three Cent Piece - It has a boring design which makes it totally sleep inducing.

From the modern era - the presidential dollar series - I have been fascinated by the presidency since I was in elementary school, but somehow these coins do nothing for me. Many of the portraits are really bad, and everything is in low relief.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Proof and mint sets in general.

It doesn't have to be profitable, but it's cheap fun.

Roosie dimes, although from my perspective most FDR dime collectors are looking for monster toners, which is understandable.

I really don't like US Trade dollars. IMO the design is boring, uninspiring and ugly. Mix in the fact that they have a huge premium and it's a no from me. I get that there's history behind them but I'll just buy a cheap one for the type set and move on. The chopmarked ones are cool though.

The eagle's head on the Ike dollars looks like a lizard's head. I live in the middle of a Bald Eagle preserve. I see those birds quite often. I see multitudes of lizards everyday around here. You can't convince me otherwise...... the eagle's head on the Ike's looks like a lizard's head. So because of that I don't particularly like that coin. But I don't hate it.

Why do people pick on Zincolns? They are the only US coin with a self-destruct feature. They might as well stamp an expiration date on them. :D
