A local TV station in Detroit had a story a few days back about the backup of mail at the Allen Park, MI postal distribution center. There were semi-trucks full of mail backed up far down the block just waiting to be able to drop off their loads.

LOL, you mean considering the government is trying to put them out of business? "Great" isn't a word I typically associate with widespread incompetence and zero accountability to customers.
When you consider the immense size of the USPS and the immense scope of its daily logistics challenges — and yet still the mail 99% of the time gets there, just at times taking longer than it might normally — I stand by my comment!
I might agree with you if FedEx and UPS weren't also dealing with "immense scope and daily logistics challenges" and yet their packages don't seem to be getting stuck in hubs for days and weeks at a time. What you see as "great", I consider "barely adequate" and something of a national embarrassment, but Congress is largely to blame due to its inability to provide emergency funding during the pandemic. This has all been discussed at length here over the last several months.
I'm out.
Actually, my parents had a UPS shipment from Amazon that got lost in the midwest for 2 months over the summer.

Back in the days of the US Post Office Department they used to hire large numbers of college students to deliver the mail during the pre-Christmas rush. I did this during 1966 and 1967 when my break period from college coincided with the days they needed workers. I recall being paid $3.85 an hour, which was big money for a college student worker in those days (most college student jobs paid $1.50 -$1.75 per hour.) The USPS should have done what the USPOD used to do.
They do hire seasonal staff. That creates its own set of problems because they aren't fully trained.

Did they have COVID in 1966? It’s pretty obvious what’s happening, huge increase in packages, sick employees, probably need to limit the amount of people in each workplace, doubt they could bring in a bunch of temp people this year. Add it all up and your are going to get delays. This is a temporary thing that will get better soon. We need to be understanding and relax.
Let's just hope they deliver the vaccines a lot faster than everything else................ And I'm more than willing to wait for all non-essential (especially BILLS!!) mail until the vaccines get delivered!

I support the USPS workers & appreciate the job they are doing in tough circumstances. And I'm equally impressed over how well they performed during the elections, despite overt attempts to sabotage them.
That said, there needs to be a better system for tracking items. In our case, we're not dealing with coins, but important medication for my Mother-in-Law. On Dec 7, it was tracked as "in transit to the next station" & deu for delivery on the 9th. Other than updates to say it's "running late" and due dates updated to the previous date 2 days in a row now, there NO FURTHER updates on its whereabouts, and her supply is running dangerously low.
It's now 5 days since leaving NJ to her destination just outside Philly, and she has NO CLUE as to if & when it might get here.
THAT's concerning..........
Better see about getting an emergency supply locally. I got on/was put on mail order recently and so far no issues, but thankfully my fulfillment center is in Illinois. Not too far from here.
BAJJERFAN: She still has a couple days' supply, and we will look into an emergency Rx if it comes down to it, but it was coming just from across the river in NJ to outside of Philly, so shouldn't have come to this. GOOD news is we finally got a status update that it made it to the Regional Philly Distro Center this morning...... so MAYBE by Monday's delivery?????
**UPDATE!! 12/14/20: ** Tracking finally had the package arriving at the Phila. Distribution Center over the weekend, and she just had it delivered today - - before her supply ran out. Crisis Averted!!

For the big mail-order drug companies, I guess they ship their standard way unless you specifically ask them to do a faster way at added costs. My MIL's Rx's have usually arrived in plenty of time the usual way, so never thought to expedite this order, as it was filled with plenty of time left - - just not forseeing the slowdown. But I'll have her investigate getting the same Rx's refilled locally in the future, if at similar cost. Thx!

I'm talking about things in the aggregate. My personal experience is that FedEx and UPS are far more reliable (and better at meeting their estimates) than USPS since the start of the pandemic. Furthermore, why would PCGS have switched to UPS earlier this year if the USPS were doing as good a job overall?

I’ve had plenty of UPS packages get delivery exceptions and be late, not necessarily during the pandemic, but over the years. USPS has pretty quick delivery times it’s somewhat expected maybe they can’t meet all them right now. Usually 2 days for Priority and 3 days for first class. UPS Ground can take upwards of a week to get across the country.
I kind of doubt PCGS switched to UPS due to delivery times, they probably got a contract in place for a better rate. If they stuck with USPS Priority Mail my coins would probably have been delivered in 2 days, but they ship UPS 3 day, which also doesn’t delivery on Saturday so can add a day there too depending on the day they are shipped out.

I ordered an Innobuck from the mint. It arrived at the Memphis Regional distribution center on the 30th and left on the 12th. Good thing I don't need it at any particular time.
Are any of you currently going through a postal insurance claim right now because of late/lost packages? If so, how is it being handled? Are they requesting more time for the package to arrive before they pay the claim, or are they just paying it like a normal lost package? My normal timeframe for a Usps insurance claim payout is ~7 days to give a baseline timeline.
My regular mailman just deliver mail today. I don't ever remember seeing him working on a Sunday before. In years past, they hired PT workers to deliver on Sunday a few times near Christmas but never my regular guy.
"I've seen many people complaining about not getting their parcels from USPS on time or they're stuck in a distribution center. It's not even the busiest week yet (this Monday is) Outside one distribution center there were 18 semi trucks full of packages waiting to be unloaded. Thats why it's taking days at one place. This Christmas has the most volume I've ever seen in 25 years. We are affected by Covid like everyone else which makes us short-handed and slow to get things out. It's bad especially with everyone ordering online due to Covid. So please don't yell at the clerks or the delivery people. We are doing our best with the situation we are dealt with."
I could be wrong but one thing I haven't seen mentioned here. With all the closures, stay at home, social distancing etc. More and more shopping is being done online. My wife has been doing ALL her X-mas shopping online unlike in past years. Definitely more USPS, Fed-Ex, UPS and Amazon traffic in my area. Volume is up, delivery times have to suffer.

This has been happening to me quite a bit lately -- buyers quick to pull the trigger on "item not received".
I liked it better when buyers would email me about issues vs. getting big brother eBay involved.
But eBay wants it this way so they can jump in on the white horse, track down the renegade sellers, punish them accordingly, and come to the rescue of the buyer, which will lead to buyer loyalty (and misty-eyed admiration) to the eBay platform.
Many buyers need more patience, especially with things the way they are -- even without the added stress of Christmas volume.
I have a package that was shipped to me from CA in late November that hasn't arrived and I am not freaking out about it.
It will get here when it gets here (unless it doesn't) 🙂
I believe I am a patient man, but when does that move from being a virtue to a vice?
English Language Learners Definition of patience
the ability to wait for a long time without becoming annoyed or upset
the ability to remain calm and not become annoyed when dealing with problems or with difficult people
the ability to give attention to something for a long time without becoming bored or losing interest
I have one package that is many weeks late; it did not get scanned at the post office put into the drop box inside, it showed up two weeks later, a week later is on a side trip to the Midwest when it was shipped in the NY area heading to the Boston area.
Also have packages years ago now that never arrived. And the usps talks about their dead letter center in the Atlanta area where hopefully your package will finally be sent to the rightful owner. "Bartleby the Scrivener" even would be shocked.
I have a $120 purchase item that has been delayed going on 2 weeks. Seller working with me but the Xmas mail coupled w covid causing delay. Sellers have no control over this. Not their fault. Once Xmas over situation should improve. Once Covid off field plan return to shows.
4 auc did not sell bc they did don’t want pay money - threw back in store at retail.
Sales slow the economic impact of covid situation certainly a factor. The market for items that trade close to melt should remain strong but other material weak. An exception CC and low pop as doing well. How will market be in 6 mo? Would not be surprised if it did. Tens of Millions out of work many may never recover earnings level before covid as fallout from it becomes more evident.
As I was reading this thread, an Amazon Prime box truck pulled into my driveway but then turned around. No delivery for me but I have no Amazon orders now.
But I think I just saw the future. Amazon has figured out that delivery is yet another step in the process that they can compete in and dominate. At first, they will cherry pick the most dense delivery areas and leave the scraps to the USPS or UPS. Once they get a foothold, they will wind down the other carriers. At that point, I think the USPS will be in really deep trouble - more than they already are.
I had to wait in line at my USPS, and they had a separate line set up for package pickups only. I was amazed to see that of all the packages picked up, maybe two thirds were in Amazon packaging. Sure opened my eyes.

Just curious what you mean by seller working with you? Keeping an eye on the tracking, discount?
I have a couple eBay items coming that shipped early December and are still in transit. I haven’t contacted seller, am watching the tracking info and know it will get here when it gets here.

Amazon and Walmart - the online Kings - are striving for same day delivery. However, as that goal approaches, the pricing flexibility disappears. You may have noticed that Amazon retail pricing is not as inexpensive as it used to be. Part of the reason: they have been building warehouses all over the country. They are no longer an "online retailer" but a warehouse club with an online platform attached.
The USPS has a mandate to deliver to every address in American, no matter how remote. Amazon delivery trucks don't. Amazon dumps packages on USPS for remote delivery locations. Something they would not be able to do if they ran USPS into the ground. Trump's understanding of the USPS/Amazon relationship is slightly flawed, but not totally. Amazon gets to profit from urban center delivery while dumping the unprofitable delivery on USPS.

They should probable create a new class of mail for such items. Getting drugs is increasingly commonplace and they probably shouldn't put it in with the regular mail stream. Or are they assuming you would have it shipped Express?
The drawback would be that it might be easier to steal once it becomes known what's in the packages, but the rattling of the pills usually gives the contents away anyway.
In my case standard shipping is free. Even some prescriptions are no cost since I may have my deductible satisfied.

I suppose that's true, although only the mail handlers would need to know the classification. And they can probably already tell from the labelling.
IDK. Just seems like there should be an affordable (not Express) but "Critical" classification.
I mean, they ship livestock. I assume they don't accidentally lose a crate of chicks for 3 months in a sorting facility....although maybe I shouldn't assume that.

The chicks in question were shipped-out as new hatchlings. I believe they arrived (around the same time as that 104-year-old letter from a soldier to his college sweetheart) as fully-grown ROOSTERS!! (but don't quote me on that!).
I just got a non-receipt claim. The item was moving across US but tracking was last shown on 12/7. I read the eBay rules and it says if movement has been seen during last 10 days of time claim started, another 10 days will be given before item is considered lost. I will see what happens.
I just got my 1st non-receipt claim out of around 40 or so out there that are late. I messaged them about what is happening with the USPS requesting they be patient and I would certainly refund if they didn't get their seashell in this instance. They almost immediately cancelled their request!
I had my first item come up missing today, it was lost from the system on 8 Dec, no updates since. My local postal clerk said that one of two things happened:
- It was delivered but not scanned (unlikely in my opinion because it was 1500 miles from destination)
- It is in a warehouse somewhere waiting to get sorted
2020 keeps getting better! I am going to upgrade shipments to priority to see if anything improves. I don't know if it is going to help but I have a sneaky suspicions that Express and Priority are getting some special treatment.
Digging in a little more... I have a slew of packages not delivered.

I didn't realize till now how eBay International works. They ship USPS to Kentucky then switch to DHL who ships it to the country of destination.
Oddly, USPS.com doesn't recognize the tracking number even though they scan it. Software glitch.
I have an 1876-cc $10 that hasn't been scanned since the 30th
it's registered, but a claim could be filed at this point.
Wooohoo! My package going to Alabama from California via Priority Mail was delivered today. Expected 2 days, took 12 days. Phew.

Actually they have had issues with chicks not getting delivered in a reasonable time.
Oh dear...poor chicks.

The USPS Website is extremely slow today. Anyone else experiencing this slow down?
I've been trying for 20 minutes to send five small flat rate boxes in a batch order.
It lost the order the first time....trying again!!
Good luck out there!
Digging in a little more... I have a slew of packages not delivered.
