This is one of my favorite sets from the non sport world. The character is one who has left an indelible mark on global culture for seven decades, making his literary debut in 1953. As one of the first popular black athletes in American history, in what was at the time America’s most popular sport, his legacy doesn’t really get the credit it is due. He paved the way for Jackie Robinson in lots of ways and his fighting record and impact on boxing are undeniable.
