I don't know if any of you guys remember me, but I put together master sets of Heritage from 2005-2017 ("1956" - "1968") and traded with a bunch of you to complete my sets every year. I loved it. But last year, when cases went over $1K, I pulled the plug. I do miss it and I get vicarious pleasure from seeing your pulls on this thread.
As an homage to my Heritage career, here are some of my better hits over the years. Enjoy!
I remember you paleo! Great stuff man.... I just came back after 11 years or so away so I went a little nuts with this year. We’ll see about next year but it is 1971 Topps so there is that
First, I have to say the photography isn't too bad in comparison to other years (i.e. to say it's darn good IMO).
Overall centering and cut was good - some mishaps on the bottom - mostly from my perspective - but overall good.
My first criticism?
A case and short by 12 SPs? IMO, I should be closer than that. I was able to complete most all of the subsets except for the Scratch Offs - shy 3 (9,18,15)
I was able to complete a full extra NAP set.
Now - for fun - one card which impacted so many of us here:
April 10th, 1970 - Paul McCartney announces he was leaving the band - so for all purposes that's the split of the Beatles!
I was in a band in college with "no name" - that's right we were the "Band with No Name" - signature song? Stairway to Heaven. We felt bad and did a "Tribute to the Beatles" nite in the student union.
If anyone has a card from the set that speaks to them?
Good insights Mike, I was a sophmore in 70, remember how much play Let it Be, Cosmos Factory got that year.
I am still 5 SP short after a hobby case and 84 retail packs.
Happened on 3 blasters from Walmart
Gotta admit that I like these more than I thought I would.
Feels good to hit some hometown ink and cloth!
Also noticed an Acuña is a French parallel. Nice

Just not sure about the value, dropping a grand, hoping you get a "master set" (although I'm not even sure what that is anymore). I know getting a complete set out of a case was getting harder. And then having a bunch of random "chase" cards and really one maybe two "big"-ger hits. Wished the set was cleaner and more focused like the earlier days but that was a decade ago... haha.
This. I ditched the idea of getting back to Heritage after seeing that a hobby case is a grand. F that. Instead I'm buying unopened from the early and mid 80's with that budgeted dinero.
A note on "apples and oranges" - just my take but I'm sure others who do this will concur?
I can see how one might think dropping a grand on a hobby case is a bit much?
One could easily drop a grand or more on "one" card and that's OK with me.
Take home?
For me? Every time I do this - for about a month or two, I have some really good entertainment - it's ["fun"] time consuming to open, collate, research what I got and take time to trade with my buddies - it's what kids do/did.
Cost: 1 hobby case from Dave&Adams for 1075$ delivered. Value: priceless

Question for the heritage veterans here. I typically collate my sets, but this go-round, I think I just want to grab the complete set already collated. Do any of you have an idea when the opportune time would be to pull the trigger, in terms of price?

Smart on the $ side. Especially if you are on a strict budget. The only downside set wise is you typically aren't getting the best centered cards. Ive thought about it for sure but this is the only set I bust and collect raw so I use that as an excuse to over spend. Plus Stone has such a great point. You can't replace the fun opening packs, collating, researching, and one on one trading with the community. Worth the price to me ...
BUT if thats what you are going to do and can wait a couple weeks I am putting together three complete base sets for sale.

It certainly is fun and the only non vintage cards I collect other than OPC hockey which are also retro.

Have never purchased one - so I have no idea Aaron.
However, what will affect the current asking prices will involve the rookies in the set and what they might do during the summer? Just a thought.
My gut tells me that the asking price early in the collation will be high and may drop over time.
Sets from last year in many cases may include the Heritage update of 100 cards where some have value like Soto and Acuna e.g., from 2018.
Plus, there's a seller who open like 100 cases - so some cards will definitely be more in the NMMT and centering may be suspect? Again - just a thought - have no idea.
Want a cheaper way to do the set?
You can get a "base" set for like 30 to 40 bucks - that's raw value of like 180 bucks worth of cards if ya think about the fact that an 89 buck hobby box contains 192 cards.
Then pick up the SPs in group lots at a fair price - the subsets aren't that expensive either - the NAP set of 25 cards is about 25 bucks I believe?
I'm sure you can get "fair market" help here also.
Just a thought. Wish I could be more precise but like I said - have never purchased a set.
Take home? My take? A Master Set will probably be its most expensive early on unless a few rookies catch fire and then - again - the Heritage RCs are no where as desirable as the Bowman prospects, chromes etc. that are signed, IMO.
@heritage said:
Dave I heard heritage has 100 sp's this year
Correct George. SP 401-500.
edit: and if ya really want to have some fun? Add to that the "variations" to the SP @ 88 or more I believe. And from what I can see? That doesn't include the 100 "French" variations to the set! It would cost a small fortune to do a Super Master Set!
Thank you, guys, for the feedback. I do enjoy opening heritage for sure, so I get the fun aspect.
I was thinking that, since most of the high numbers are stars (as opposed to the last couple years, where there have been a fair share of commons in the high numbers) that it would be more cost effective to just buy the high number set. What I want to accomplish on this set is to get the base plus high numbers, the super set and the scratch-off set, as those are all true to the original set. I love the supers - I think they did a really good job with them.
Anyway, I figured I could parlay that mystery redemption I pulled into these sets fairly easily, but just don't know how long to wait for the prices to settle a bit more.
What is “super set” ? Are you referring to the Action, Name, and French variations?
If so, and although these make for a super tough chase, they aren’t part of a master set. They are available in hobby only and anything that’s available in only one release type is not considered for a master set IMO.

Whoa Dan
I made that up. I was just saying - what if someone wanted a Master Set + all the variations? That would cost a tidy sum.

Mike I was actually referring to lahmejoon’s post which also referenced a “super set”. You never know in the ever changing world of these modern issues!

Oh, sorry, I was referring to the 15 card box topper set that is a throwback to the original 1970 Topps super set.

Did I leave anything out?

I made that up. I was just saying - what if someone wanted a Master Set + all the variations? That would cost a tidy sum.
