My proof buffalo story
So, several years back I bought a 1937 proof buffalo nickel that was in a ICG 67 holder . This coin was all there,as they say. Great colors and super clean surfaces. I felt it as all of a seven and it was priced right so I bought it. I kept it in the black hole until recently,, and just pulled it out a month ago to send it in to PCGS. I got the coin back about a week ago and they graded it PR-66+. I am happy with this grade as buffalos are really not my series and I was very close with my grading. Splitting hairs on 67 and 66+.
So now I decide to package up 15 coins and send them to CAC. I then take off for a week of golf in Florida. I received an email from CAC and they are mailing my submission back as it is finished. 14/15 beaned, not to bad. Now if you are thinking the proof is the one coin that did not bean, you would be wrong. The proof was beaned, with a GOLD, go figure. Needless to say I am happy, and maybe my buffalo grading was not bad after all .

Here are some pictures in the prior holder when I saw it at the Boston ANA. A real gorgeous piece.

Oh baby!! What a BEAUTIFUL Buff!! You did REALLY well it's just GORGEOUS!! Lucky as a hound dog!!...
That ICG label looks like the older type, which would mean that coin was graded by the folks who are currently at ANACS.
Thanks for sharing.

<< <i>The 2nd Buffalo has a better strike. >>
being the photographer of both I think that is more lighting, than strike. Maybe the OP can chime in. On buffs it is easy to loose detail with lighting.
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.

It was not my intention to hijack your thread -- sorry if it came off that way. For 37 proofs, the strike tends to be hammered. I think Todd is correct that light and the tilt of the coins causes any differences. My guess is that in person, the strikes are comparable. I suspect Todd tilted yours slightly to pick up the nice peripheral color that is in your coin. Your coin looks every bit a 67 from here.

Crazy golf trip. 86 & 87 the first two days right off the plane. Next two rounds, 101&102. Round five, 73 after 16 and the skies opened up with a par three and a short par 4 left. It ranied so hard that all the greens were under water and no golf for several hours. shot 102 the next to last day, with the wind blowing 35-40 mph, truley unbeliveable. Finished the trip on Sunday with a 81. Go figure it seemed just as windy that day. Scored all over the place on this trip, no rhime or reason. I had a blast though

For whatever reason your Proof quarter looks better in PCGS holder than it did in the ICG holder. I see a spot toward the top of the Indian’s hair in the ICG holder which would make known it down to PR-66 from 67, and some cloudiness in the reverse mirror between the buffalo’s legs. In the PCGS holder the obverse spot is gone, and the cloudiness is diminished. Maybe it is the lighting, but if the obverse spot really is there, I would not have given that piece a gold bean in the PR-66+ holder.
<< <i>In its early days ICG made a strong effort to be a top tier grading company. In fact in my view is that ICG made stronger effort than any other “second tier” company to be among the best. Unfortunately they ran into the same consumer resistance that has hit any company that has tried for the top. All the coins that were really nice ended up in the “big two holders” and anything that was slightly off stayed in the ICG holder unless the owner took a down grade. Then ICG lowed their standards, and the rest is history.

looks like the pretty color above the buff's hip is gone too
I like it alot. I would love to be able to own a Proof Buffalo Nick one day.
There are some good coins in ICG holders.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

Great thread about Proof Buffalo's and ICG. Do you think they are undervalued?
Hoard the keys.
Sent them to pcgs to cross- both came back 66+
Sent them both back to CAC
both gold stickered.
I was exceptionally happy

Another thing that hurt ICG was all the Proof70 grades they gave out not long after they started up. The old printed Teletrade auction booklets had tons of this stuff. That was another reason they lost their credibility way back when.
The milk spots (or whatever) in the reverse fields of the former ICG piece also detract slightly to my eye.
