Found this at the pawn shop.

I found this at the pawn shop down the street. Common silver dollar, but I picked it up cause it had pretty color and was in a different looking holder.
Anyone know the story on these holders?

I read some threads over these holders.

They are an older holder style from the 80's (?).

Looks like Morgans are commonly found in them and carry a small premium. Other coins are more rarely found and carry a larger premium.

Am I on the right track?

I got this for $65.00. Didn't see any others. I sometimes go by pawn shops around here and browse

as there is a major lack of collector coin shops in KC.

Just checked Condors slab book and this slab is know as PCGS3. Issued sometime before 1995.

Thanks for the tips guys. I feel bad for talking the guy down now as he had it marked $80. I don't think he knew it was any different than other holders.

I will have to do some research on ebay and see if it is worth selling with fees and all.

The posts look more like ones coming from Nurse Sharks ... I bet the Great Whites are sending PMs!

There are enough posting warning of a higher value that I think the sharks will be repelled.

Forget the hassle and fees of ebay. Put it on the BST and watch it go in a hurry for top dollar.

Do any of you other guys regularly look for and find nice coins in pawn shops?

It seems like there is little chance of finding nice things there. However, I guess there is also the chance that
the shop owners have something nice and don't really know it.

That's a sweet Morgan and holder. Great price too. Also a nice Perace Dollar cut-out. I stop into pawn shops once in a while when I'm traveling around. Never have seen any good deals, just prices on coins that are rediculously high sometimes.

I kinda envy your find, as my experience with pawn shops and coins is one of utter disappointment. I do however have a couple of real nice power tools I got at pawn shops for a steal

Well, the pawn shop near me does have a lot of numismatic items and some supplies, so it may not be your typical pawn shop.

The quality, however, sucks. Mostly just raw problems coin priced at full retail. Anything perceived to be special (CC morgan) is a bit overvalued.

Guess I caught them on a good day.

ive had very good luck at pawn shops. I can almost always get pms for spot or just over. they usually dont specialize in coins and yes sometimes dont understand exactly what they have. there is one impaticular that i stop into and almost always walk out with something.

Good luck!!! There aren't a whole lot left to be found (unless you want to pay MOOON money..like Apollo lunar landing moon money). Besides, there are more than just a few here that hunt these things like a starving dog looking for that rib-eye someone's got grilling, that they can smell!!!

Can you post a better pic? That appears to be missing the outer ring from what I can tell and will reduce the value accordingly.

I took the pic with my iphone. I cropped off the bottom rim slightly. I didn't post it here to sell it, only to show what I had found.

The real doilies have an outer ring around them leading to the oft used term double holder. It's like the the old rattlers with a ring added which makes it look more like the current holders. From the top of your pic the ring appears to be missing. Compare yours to the pics in the "doily census" thread. In the early days, dealers frequently removed the outer ring so that they'd fit into the rattler boxes.

Would still be nice to see a pic of the whole slab and the reverse. It still looks to me from the top right of the pic that the outer ring is missing. You can see a bit o daylight at the edge which shouldn't be there if the ring is present.

There are people who go around on a regular basis and check out the pawn shops for newps. Same for those antique malls like the Brass Armadillo in Des Moines, Omaha and a couple of other places. It's likely pure dumb luck that you were able to snag that. Same for these little hometown auctions; there are usually 1 or 2 people there who know what stuff is worth.

I stop in a few pawn shops every now and then, but rarely find anything interesting. However, while visiting my folks this Christmas, I stopped in a local pawn shop and saw the following set in a very beat up plastic holder...

But even in that beat up holder and in the bottom of the display case, I could tell the coins were nicely toned and I had to take a closer look. Shockingly, when I asked the price I was actually quoted a very fair price, barely above the silver melt value of the coins. After a closer look, the coins were beautifully toned on both sides. Unfortunately, the Peso appears to have been cleaned (probably when it was first put into the cardboard holder many years ago) as there are various lightly hairlines across MacArthur's face and in the fields when tilted just right. The 50 centavos appears to be problem free. In any event, I'm glad I was able to find something in the shop, especially something this cool and relatively inexpensive.

After opening the case I attempted to get better pics of the coins as follows, but it wasn't easy to get the color to show well without completely washing out the coin with too much light...

I have 6 1884-O Doilies already . . . from MS64 to MS65. Another . . . . .??? The point? Well, let's let someone send a PM for the right amount. This one should sell for about $170. Just IMHO. Nice Pawn shop acquisition. Wish it would have been me!
