1857 $20: Which do you prefer? -- Grades Revealed on Page 2

BloodManBloodMan Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭✭✭
Which 1857 $20 do you prefer? Both are in the upper AU grades, original in appearance and certified by CAC? The two coins are graded by different grading services.

Coin A has a “dusty” gold appearance with underlying luster and dirt in the protected areas (eg, under the “D.” on the reverse).

Coin B has yellow-gold color and substantial luster.

I like both of them, but I am curious what the forum members think. All comments welcome. Thanks in advance.

I voted for B as that's more so the type of example I'd purchase as it have far better eye appeal to me along with striking details.

Although I can appreciate some collectors seeking out unmolested dusty types... Dirty gold doesn't make my wallet wiggle.

B for sure! The first coin is circulated and the second one is low mint state. The second one has a much better strike. The first coin has some gunk on the reverse. I don't know why you would even ask on this one?? image

I voted B. The luster and strike appear far superior.
The cheek on a A looks thumbed.

both are terrific coins- I prefer B but in all fairness, a collector should be pleased to own either

Both are nice. B appears to be the higher grade and more expensive coin.

Another vote for B. They both appear to be nice and original coins but B has more luster, better strike, and less wear

I'd hope they're in different upper AU grades, because coin B is much nicer.

I don't much care for lots of dirt on AU coins. It looks better when the coin is worn down to XF or lower. In AU, it just looks like schmutz.

B is borderline uncirculated, the other coin has a lot of wear and far less luster....but it is "dirtier!"

B is at least an AU58 while A is at best an AU55, regardless of the liberal grade it might have been assigned. Me like coin B.

Even though I generally prefer coins with the look of A, I think B is a nicer coin. Mostly it comes down to sharper strike.

Coin B looks like the more marketable of the two.

I don't know what cleaned gold looks like (unless it's harsh and uber obvious), but I thought coin B might be cleaned when I first saw it.

    Between the 2 coins I'd take B.

If A was selling at a nice discount to B then I might take A, it's a nice coin but probably not worth as much as B. image

    With 64 forum members responding to the poll, 12.5% selected Coin A (1857 $20 NGC AU55 CAC) and 87.5% selected Coin B (1857 $20 PCGS AU58 CAC).

    Thanks for the insightful comments.

Both are nice coins---one is just a little nicer than the other.

I think that there is a much larger gap between those two than 5 pts. B is a far better
    struck and preserved coin.

I think you mean 3 points. In any event, both coins are properly graded.

I voted for B. It has better eye appeal and less wear. I would grade coin A as an AU-53 and coin B as an AU-55.

I've never been a fan of foreign crud on gold. If it is hiding something under, do you really like that coin? If it's not, why leave it one there?

I would agree that I see those coins as 4-5 pts apart rather than the 3 pts assigned. And if you factor in how ATS tends to be a tad more lenient with the $20's then it makes sense.
Call then 54/59 or 54/58 or even 53/58....but that more aptly describes them than 55 vs 58. If I received them in the mail sight unseen I'd be disappointed in coin A but satisfied with
coin B. Then again in AU55 aren't these pretty much close to bullion coins any ways?
