Which 1857 $20 do you prefer? Both are in the upper AU grades, original in appearance and certified by CAC? The two coins are graded by different grading services.
Coin A has a “dusty” gold appearance with underlying luster and dirt in the protected areas (eg, under the “D.” on the reverse).
Coin B has yellow-gold color and substantial luster.
I like both of them, but I am curious what the forum members think. All comments welcome. Thanks in advance.

Although I can appreciate some collectors seeking out unmolested dusty types... Dirty gold doesn't make my wallet wiggle.

The cheek on a A looks thumbed.

I don't much care for lots of dirt on AU coins. It looks better when the coin is worn down to XF or lower. In AU, it just looks like schmutz.

B is at least an AU58 while A is at best an AU55, regardless of the liberal grade it might have been assigned. Me like coin B.

Ya, I'll be the odd man out.
I don't know what cleaned gold looks like (unless it's harsh and uber obvious), but I thought coin B might be cleaned when I first saw it.

If A was selling at a nice discount to B then I might take A, it's a nice coin but probably not worth as much as B.

I think you mean 3 points. In any event, both coins are properly graded.

I've never been a fan of foreign crud on gold. If it is hiding something under, do you really like that coin? If it's not, why leave it one there?
Call then 54/59 or 54/58 or even 53/58....but that more aptly describes them than 55 vs 58. If I received them in the mail sight unseen I'd be disappointed in coin A but satisfied with
coin B. Then again in AU55 aren't these pretty much close to bullion coins any ways?
