Just curious-- will you be taking a break from posting to recognize Earth Hour tomorrow?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
As I write these words, gentle readers, a new day has dawned in Beijing. It is bright and sunny, and the dust storms that have choked the city (and its inhabitants) have subsided.

On the front page of the local newspaper was an article indicating that on Saturday evening, at 8:30 PM, the lights of the Forbidden City will go dark, in honor of Earth Hour. A tear came to Longacre's eye at this excessively liberal gesture, particularly from the Chinese.

I am curious if anyone on these boards will be taking a break from posting on Saturday evening, in recognition of Earth Hour. I, for one, will be sitting in a darkened hotel suite, will refrain from posting to the boards, and will ride out the hour with nary a call to room service or the concierge.

Won't someone post an excessively dark coin to keep this thread topical? I fear darkness will come from a poof.

I'll be turning off the light on my back porch for an hour. Of course, since I still need light out there, I'll be burning an old tire doused in gasoline during that time. That should give off plenty of light.

On Saturday evening 8:30 pm China time, my lights will have long been off as I turned in for the evening. And since I sleep in, EDT USA, I expect my lights will still be off. Liberally speaking, I don't consider using electricity liberally a liberal pursuit. Rather, I am rather conservative with my use of electricity. I suppose some of my conservative counterparts are much more liberal with their consumption of electricity. Why not? Go figure! image

Unlike the rest of the ecological heathens on this thread, I will be paying homage to mother earth by planting a tree in the back yard, then relaxing with a glass of spring water while reading my autographed copy of Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit. When the hour has passed I will turn on the electricity to the homestead, provided some wind is available to power my wind mill, and enjoy a filming of An Inconvenient Truth with my family. My only wish for the future is that Al Gore has enough strength to run in 2016 after Lord Obama retires. image

A suggestion that we not post to the forum for an hour?? Seems on topic to me - especially if it's an hour relief from "The Big One". image

You sure it's the power that will go off in Beijing, or is it just being unable to see through the smog of the coal burning plants all around the City?

Since this thread is currently on page one anyway....

Please give me a break, Michael. You could say the same thing about ANY subject, none of them having anything to do with coins. Under your line of reasoning, nothing is "particularly off topic".

Noon Today, I will get my metal detector and go check "the Earth" and see what I can dig up.

In that way, I will combine respect for the Earth, and coin collecting.

Hopefully I can liberate a rare coin from its polluting effects upon the soil.

My hour with the metal detector turned up a rather brown looking Quarter.

Upon a little cleaning, it is a 1977.

I looked out behind a long closed drug store in town, expected to find something older, but...........

amazing how many people 'get interested' when they see someone with a metal detector. I think they feel you about to uncover the lost dutchman mine...and they arent going to get any of the riches.

Or, they think you are insane.

I turned my lights on. The global warming stuff is a hoax that is designed to increase the scope and power of government over the people. If the draconian proposals that the global warming statists were to be enacted, poverty would be worse in the world and the human condition would deteriorate. That would prompt them to enact more socialist policies that would make things worse. Take a look at Cuba. Cuba has the statists’ ideal form of government.
