OFFICIAL***2010 Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary - sell out?

renman95renman95 Posts: 7,037 ✭✭✭✭✭
How fast will this sell out? There must be millions of Boy Scouts out there, young and old. I know I will be getting at least three.

Wasn't the USMC commem increased to 500,000 from 350,000 due to projected demand?

I think that there is a good chance that these will be very popular.

My burning question is: Why does the person on the right on the obverse look like a girl? Am I missing something here? I read the description of the obverse, but why a girl is on a Boy Scouts coin still has me confused. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

    Nope...it was increased from 500k to 600k.

I predict it will be a fairly quick sell-out, with ebay prices rising to over $100, just as the Lincoln Dollars. As disclosure, I am buying 50 of these. But again, who knows?image

    Mintage Limit 350,000
Order Limit "100 units each per household"

I think this mean 100 proof & 100 Unc. 1,750 speculators could clean out all 350 thousand. Double that if it is 100 total. reduce it if some speculators hacve proxys buy for them.

There are 2.8 million members, and 1.1 million adult leaders. Add to that millions of graduated members.

So the huge unknown is what will the demand be? Do half of all present scouts try to get one, or only one in 20?

The girl is representing Venturing Scouts which makes scouting available to boys AND girls from the ages of 14 to 21. Venturing does n t have an Eagle Program although "Boy Scouts" can participate in Venturing and work toward their Eagle Rank.

Boy Scouts, officially ends on the 18th birthday and Venturing enables youth to continue with the scouting adventure until they are adults at age 21.

It definitely has a chance to sell out. Even though I am a former Boy Scout and Explorer (1960-64) I won't be buying one. I'm just not interested in any current US Mint products.

Thanks for the explanation. I did not know that they had this program.

the Lincolns aren't close to $100 yet... more like $60-$70 for the proofs.

I predict the coin will be a disappointment. It will sell out eventually

and then, after a slight flipper blip, end up below issue price. I am

    calling a DUD ALERT.

"The girl is representing Venturing Scouts which makes scouting available to boys AND girls from the ages of 14 to 21."

I was not aware of this program. However, since the coin represents the 'Boy Scouts', it is still not representative to have a female depicted. Cheers, RickO

I'm still surprised when, on this board, people get so excited about sell-outs of high-mintage issues. I think it's much more interesting when intriguing issues sell poorly. That said, I did love the Lincoln Chronicles set and the UHR. Sometimes design does trump low mintage.

One of my sons crosses over to become a Boy Scout thursday March 25. Something good to look forward to for a change.

Did I read somewhere that the Mint will be introducing and/or selling them at the Fort Worth ANA show?

There are thousands of Den Mothers who disagree with some of you. Women play a vital role in BSoA.

Women play a vital role in BSoA. Yep....my mom drove me to most of my meetings, kept me on track with my merit badges etc even if she did not directly participate! Different time/place then but I am sure if given the opportunity she would have loved to have been more involved!

I was a boy scout but really have no interest in the coin. I guess if they offered the coin back then.....maybe.
  • I said this before. I could easily have accepted and embraced a coin with a Den Mother on it. I would have bought it with fond memories of my Mom and the other women that did so much for scouting. That would have met the criteria for celebrating 100 years of "history" with the scouts. There is one and only one reason for the design on this coin. I will not buy it even though I, and my son, have gained much from the Boy Scout program. I'll give my $40 dollars to the local scouts when they come collecting.

There's the Den Mothers and the Den Fathers

and there is the Venture Scouts thing....

    but forget about that...

Why are they putting "people's faces" on them? (2009 Plat's are an example, too)
    Why not some symbolism?

Only in this bendover-for-the-PC crowd society would there be a girl on a BOY SCOUT commemorative coin.
Venturing Scouts should be considered an entirely separate organization...same as the Girl Scouts (and I am willing to bet THEY won't have a boy on THEIR coin when eventually issued).

In that same vein I would expect to see a man on the up coming Girl Scout commem. Something tells me that PC doesn't swing that way.

I'm still buying at least three.

I really cant believe this. It is the WORST design ever thought of for a Boy Scout Commem. As a former scout I will not buy any now nor in the future.

The sell out has begun with a thrashing of the US Mints Web Site!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

This reminds me of the 2009 $100 platinum that no one wanted and sold out in 8 days.

That sellout was around $14 million for 8,000 coins. A BSA sellout would be around $13 million.
