Got my 2 uncs and 1 proof today.

Uncs have some "hits" I guess. Is that what we call the tiny fleck/spots where the burnished finish exposes shinyness? Reverse that for "hits" on the proofs?

I've got 4 and then 6 of these hits on my uncs, and then a reverse hit on the field on one side of my proof. The only way I saw these was shining a LED flashlight at each of the coins and rotating them to look for these. General inspection would miss these hits by a long shot, but I saw them naked with the light inspection.

Are these considered grading knocks??? And if so how many points would these hurt? I'm not a grader by any means, just trying to understand I guess.

    Mint News Blog - 3/31/10:

2010 Boy Scouts Centennial Silver Dollar Sales Debut at 214,673

    Posted: 30 Mar 2010 07:49 PM PDT

The latest US Mint sales report has just been posted over at Coin Update News. The report includes the opening sales figures for the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar. As expected, the opening numbers were strong, but there is still some way to go before a sell out. Through March 29, 2010, the US Mint reported combined sales of 214,673. This total is made up of 144,732 proof coins and 69,941 uncirculated coins. The maximum authorized mintage for the commemorative coin program is set at 350,000 across all ordering options.

To put the opening numbers in perspective, the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar, which went on sale February 28, 2010, recorded opening sales of 98,358. Total sales to date are now 179,052.

From last year's programs, the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollar had debut sales figures of 177,722. The 450,000 coins allocated for individual sales had sold out after just over one month.

The 2009 Louis Braille Silver Dollar recorded debut sales of 70,274 and eventually sold 167,526 coins across all options.

Using these recent commemorative coin issues as a guideline, it seems fair to say that the Boy Scouts Silver Dollar will sell out within a month at the most. Perhaps sooner, as I think the pace of sales will remain more buoyant as compared to other commemorative coin issues. Check out the full sales report at Coin Update News.

    _____________

Looks like the BSA's are at 61% of sellout during the debut period. Compare this to the Disabled Vets at 51%, and the 2009 Lincoln Commem at 39% during the same periods. Looks strong to me.

I will not be sending any of mine back...they are all very nice for those who just enjoy nice coins.

These coins will wind up to be losers for flippers after eBay fees or at at best break even. I just sold the last of my Lincoln Proof Dollars and have no desire to start dealing with the eBay idiots again.

As for those who think these coins will be losers...I can see quite a few Scouts putting these away and not flipping them.

I can also imagine quite a few troops ordered a quantity and will not be returning them due to small imperfections. This may turn out to be a sleeper hit as the phychology might be similar to the military service themed commemoratives of a few years ago.
  • How many Scouts are there in the USA??
  • I just inspected my 2 unc and 1 proof, however my yn and crippled eyes suck. I was using the west sunlight this morning and chased it all the wat down the dinning room table...lol(my florescent died). I was very pleased with the two unc, but the proof I question. Maybe it's the capsule, a few spec spots I'm s sure is. the double against the mirror like finish, but not all. This summer all 3 go to PCGS.

Good luck with that. An official return requires you ship back with signature confirmation and a filled out return form. What are you going to use for proof of return? --Jerry

I have refused shipments before and it has not been a problem, that being said, I see you point, hope I'm lucky again this time and then will look next time at the coins before I send back if I want or need to after changing my mind.

Wow, IMO an astonishingly ugly coin that I have only just looked at - these remind me entirely of those Marshall Island coins or the ones from Liberia. I do hope that they get some sort of following. More power to those of you buying these, but will wait for another day and another commemorative.

I liked the design they didn't use the best.
  • I got my three on Wenesday and checked them out better Thursday night. I'm not so sure the white specks are on the proof coins, others mention, at least not mine, are faults. If you look at it an angle, you can see the specs reflect. This tells me the case has poor quality, not the coin. I see no less than PF69. One of the unc. is so bad I might ship it back unless someone here tells me it's a waste of time. At the 12:30 line about 8 to 10 scratches that show with different lengths and widths going in the same direction, no glass required. Because of these differences I'd say the reeds of another coin made contact 2 or 3 times. I think MS68 or even a 67.

I received my order #34106XXX Saturday.

Packaged well--No loose coins--all of them in their holders--and I was relieved to find that the coins were in great shape.

The proof is far more attractive than the uncirculated. I prefer the reverse. The contrast appears much more pronounced on the proof version.

Didn't particularly like the obverse--the artwork particularly on the cub scout strikes me as a caricature. They could have done much better.

As a father of four scouts, one of whom has his Eagle Scout Court of Honor this month, I look forward to giving several of these as gifts over the next few years.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

It’s a great coin, it’s a great tribute. Scouting is an amazing program. I think this Coin Honors the whole program. We all know the “Boy Scouts” as the origin. It was expanded by popular demand to include children and women.

    Great Link.

  • Has anyone here, besides me, sent a coin back to be replaced then billed again for another?

  • << <i>Has anyone here, besides me, sent a coin back to be replaced then billed again for another? >>

Yeah, I believe the Mint does that until they can update (or reconcile) the return in their system. It gets your replacement out the door (or at least on order) quicker. It should get adjusted later. If it takes too long give them a call.

they can be a little slow, but usually not terribly slow.

They also, usually but not always, send an e-mail saying you have been credited for the $$ value of the returns.

Give them 5 business days from the time when the returns show up in the online order page and then call. Of course, the phone reps will probably tell you to wait 30 days, etc. but they are normally faster than that. If they try to give you another 800 to call for accounting, don't take it since it is really for "collections" despite the accounting name attached to it. I have learned this the hard way with return issues, but in the past few months I haven't needed to call about my returns.

    First Week Lincoln $1s: 177,722
    Second Week Lincoln $1s: 235,248

    First Week BSA $1s: 214,673
    Second Week BSA $1s: 266,517

It took 3 - 4 weeks for the Lincoln $1 to hit the 350,000 mark.
However, notice the BSA $1 sales rate slowed relative to the Lincoln $1 between weeks 1 and 2.

In another category collectors are watching closely, total sales of the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollars reached 290,392. The proofs advanced another 16,424 to 196,400 and the uncirculated added 7,451 to 93,992.

The combined weekly increase for the BSA coins comes in at 23,875. The last Mint sales report showed a weekly increase of 51,844.

With a 350,000 max limit, the coins have reached 83.0 percent of their maximum authorized mintage.

I Threw the 3rd week data into a spreadsheet, and graphed it. Then I put a logarithmic trend line on it.

With only 3 data points the trend is really rough, but it showed it'd take 7 weeks to sell out as of this early time.

Any big Boy Scout events coming up to spur sales?

MsM: the Na'vi look today is very contemporary -- nice!

I predict a quicker sellout than 7 weeks, unless you mean from the start of sales. A small spike can do it.

I'm with a previous post, the UNC is toast with a 6/17 ship date.

According to my Mint account online, my order (Proofs and Uncs) was shipped today.

However, according to an email I got from the Mint yesterday, my Uncs will ship on June 17.

According to the USPS, the tracking number the Mint gave me doesn't exist.

Not sure what to believe at this point! I'll just wait and see. . . . .
