Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water - Chris Cipoletti now new president of a divi

Wondering through the CoinLink website when I saw an article announcing that Rare Coin Wholesalers (RCW) has hired controversial ex-ANA Executive Director Chris Cipoletti as President of Rare Coin Consultants of America, a new division of RCW. I bet that there are some here are thinking what I'm thinking - "Ah @#$%, there goes the neighborhood!" I think that Steve Contursi has totally lost his mind for hiring Cipoletti. Doesn't he recall all of the controversy surrounding Cipoletti's management of the ANA? There's a Forest Gump saying that brings this event to mind - "Stupid is as stupid does!"

The link to the article is below. What do you think? Is the hiring of Cipoletti a good move or a really stupid one? I know that there are some pro-Cipoletti forum members who will come to his defense (the same people who supported the Bill Horton regime in the last ANA board (one of the worse in ANA history)).

Is the hiring of Cipoletti a good move or a really stupid one?

Frankly, it's a move that has no impact whatsoever on what I do. Perhaps, it's a good fit for both parties--I will honestly never know.

I do not know about Chris C. running their new division but their mission is focused toward new positioning of rare coins as investments away from dealers and into high net worth hands. Not a hobby focus.

Can you please explain to me how the hiring of Chris Cipoletti by RCW
is going to have any effect on the average hobby collector?

My hunch is that it is a move to attempt to bring high end rare coins to high powered buyers who currently have little to no interest in rare coins. Rare coins will be marketed as items of great holding power, like rare art and antiquities. Although he doesn't have a numismatic background other than at the ANA, my feeling is that he has the potential to do well overseeing this operation. My reaction from working with him at the ANA last summer was that he probably communicates very well with the high powered retail buyers that they will be targeting. Like I said, many of these individuals will probably be new customers who currently have no interest in rare coins.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Well, that is a surprise. It will be interesting to see how this works out for both Mr. Cipoletti and Rare Coin Wholesalers.

I still don't understand what the "Wholesalers" part of the name means.

I think CC at RCW is a great fit. They sort of deserve each other.

Bob, I think the big 'players' in numismatics have been tryiing to get the well to do crowd that has so much money that they are bored by it to 'invest' in coins for at least the last five years. Witness the expensive registry sets of classic coins that have been put together in an 18 to 24 month time period in the last few years.

I also think some of these people have been responsible for bidding up the most of the top tier coins during this time period as well.

In Oregon the state made it illegal to have the word "wholesale" in your dealership name if you are an auto dealer, and for the ones who have "wholesale" grandfathered into their name customers must sign a statement that they are not necessarily buying for wholesale even if they are, other states have similar laws and it seems to be a coming trend to other sales areas as well--------------------BigE

I hope the ANA was not counting on another fat donation from RCW. image

(Though with the departure of Mr. Cipoletti and the cancelation of the ANA's bi-coastal expansion plans, the ANA and RCW canceled RCW's promised $1 million donation.)

The OP believes that Steve Contursi has "totally lost his mind for hiring Cipoletti". Think what you may of RCW, Chris Cipoletti and his administration, but perhaps his union with RCW may result in success in the long term.

Based on his previous threads, the OP has a habit of negatively judging people and companies that he has never had a working relationship with or otherwise know only merely by name. With that in mind, I seriously doubt if he has ever been aquainted with or conducted business with Steve Contursi. Without knowing Mr. Contursi, the OP has no merit nor right in judging the personnel decisions that RCW makes.
