Modern crap vs old crap
Which would you rather have (assuming the price is about the same):

<< <i>Neither! That ASE has hidden milk spots under that AT toning! >>
Actually, looking at the toning (and not having seen this coin in many many months as it just came out of the closet last night
I've seen some that tone and have, basically, an untoned spot (or two or three) and I think those are potential milkspots. This one looks to be pretty good.
What I have noticed on the SAE is that, even though it wasn't in a holder, just left out raw and alone, nothing touching it except what it sat on (USMint's cardboard box that the mint sets come in so it wouldn't sit on the rough wood of the closet shelves), it still is toning concentrically. Kind of cool, to me, but I didn't expect that.

<< <i>Count me as the first (only?) person who would take the cent. Not because I dislike modern COINS; I don't. However, I do catagorically refuse to pay the premium over melt that it would take to buy this or any other bullion round. >>
You can pick up eagles like this for about a 10% premium.
Why? Because I have plenty of American Eagles, including one that toned when I carried it around for a while. However I do not have old cents like that. Sure, it is all beat up, but just think of the tales it could tell...

Which to me--as a non-invester in precious metals--is about 10% more than a bullion round is worth. By the way, I don't buy classic silver coins which are priced simply for their melt value either.

I believe your point is valid.
There are lots of moderns that are more attractive and more collectible than a lot of older coins.
If you had used a really crummy BU 1983-P quarter and an attractive AU '28-S dime the vote would, no doubt, heavily favor the older coin. Even I'd be tempted by the dime.
<< <i>The penny. I'd keep it in my pocket to show kids. >>
I've found kids tend to be more interested in coins they know in nice condition
or in extremely heavily worn old coins. Most aren't impressed by old unc coins
because they have no referant. For all they know that's what they all look like,
but worn coins look "old", and unc 1965 quarters just aren't seen.
<< <i>There are lots of moderns that are more attractive and more collectible than a lot of older coins. >>
Said by a person who collects moderns. I disagree with that statement because I do not collect moderns. There is not one modern of any value that I would keep in my collection instead of that 1843 Large Cent. Not one. Sure there are moderns worth a lot more and if I were given one I would sell it in a heartbeat to buy what I like.
what such hard choices Bochiman???
I would just like to say that this would be a no brainer.
Killer ASE by the way
BTW, this is an older photo, there are much more intense

I tend to think that the comparrison is fair only because each piece would cost roughly the same at any show or shop. Having said that, as a die hard classic collector, give me the ASE. The condition of that large cent would preclude it from fitting in with my other classics.

Thanks Ron. I am still using my point and shoot camera and holding it freehand. I haven't gotten a copy stand yet. I guess I should, the pictures will be much clearer.

Steph, try a $20 tabletop mini tripod from bestbuy. It made my point and click images at least 20% better, no more blurriness!!! Copystands can go for $150 and more.

There's one in every crowd, huh Ken?
Bullion value of ~$18 for the SAE I think it is and the large cent, I overpaid for, was $20.

Hey thanks gecko.
For some reason I never thought about that.
I'm goin to pick one up tonight.
I always put the copy stand off mainly because of the space requirements. Plus the $150 would be a nice toner

Phil
Anyway, I don't like the toned ASE. Not natural IMHO. And I don't like the large cent. Some butt-ugly "cleaning" scratches and remnants. But to answer the OP, I'd rather have the large cent.

BONGO HURTLES ALONG THE RAIN SODDEN HIGHWAY OF LIFE ON UNDERINFLATED BALD RETREAD TIRES
May 22 - 1843...The first major wagon train headed for the northwest sets out with one thousand pioneers from Elm Grove, Missouri on the Oregon Trail.
You can see where I am going with this...
<< <i>Bochi....you want a REALLY fair contest? How about posting a 1995-W silver eagle in PCGS 68, and a common date proof Barber half in 66. Then ask your same question.
Nah....I don't like barbers but I also don't believe in the price on the '95-W SAE either....
I purposely didn't do a "fair contest" just because I wanted to point out that it isn't as simple as "classic vs modern".....everything has conditions to it.
Besides, with all the arguments and harsh words being thrown around, I just grabbed two "recent" coin pics I had available and started a US COIN thread in the forum.....really hope people didn't mind

The SAE is cool because it shows what happens to .999 silver set sitting in the air we breath for extended periods of time (coin sits in my home office, in the closet, on a shelf about 6ft up or so (I am 5'10")). And, I like the toning progression.
The large cent is ugly, but cool, because it IS something that can be held (low grade/low cost) and shows how we, as a nation, have changed our monies over a period of time....the look, the size, the composition. It is a coin I will allow my son to take to school for show and tell. For some people, they like to wonder who might have held the same coin (I actually don't get lost in those fantasies but I do understand them). So, it is a cool (even though ugly) coin as well.
Again, my point at this is everyone has a different reason for the coins they like/collect and there really (IMHO) shouldn't be any attacks on classics or moderns....just enjoy what one likes for whatever reasons.
Stefanie.....check the tripods when you get one. I got one from Staples (about $8) but the camera, which isn't big, tips it over when I point the camera downward....not when I point it straight out. Obviously, for coins, you point the camera down a lot
I was at FRYS electronics last weekend (looking at 40" LCD Samsung TVs
I didn't bother getting one because I did buy a copystand (well, it was a christmas present from the wife unit) but I think some of them may work. The larger tripods I have don't work (tried them as well). You only want the coin about 6-18" away I think
