I didn't say it was classy on my part, but neither is the fact that he has fleeced his customers for years with self-slabbed overgraded crap. He is the kinda' seller ebay is after with this recent decision, and i'm all for it.

This is a PCI MS66, which is typical of their overgrading:

This is why they are out.

If they could make an exception for the old green PCI holders, that would be fine, as the grading then was generally consistent with PCGS/NGC. However, it might be too confusing or difficut to enforce an exception for PCI old green slabs. >>

Great, that one again. Hey, you know the difference between an exception, and a rule?

Brandon, did you happen to ask why they haven't send messages through their system to sellers yet? Since it starts (albeit unenforced) on the 17th, you would think...
    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Agreed. PCI overgrades almost EVERY coin, but once in a while they "screw up" and grade one fairly.

PCGS will bodybag almost EVERY blatantly AT coin, but once in a while they "screw up" as well.

Maybe ebay should put in the discription.

Discounts from the going price of PCGS slabbed coins

    Discount 20% for NGC

Another 10% for ANACS and PCI

And another 20% for the rest

If you have any questions about the validility or better yet before you purchase any coins please call Russ.

    Just kidding Russ.

  • Wait a minute... do you mean there will no longer be any INB Certified FULL STRIKES?!?!?!

FULL STRIKE! (actually, I don't think I've ever seen one of these scam slabs that weren't FULL STRIKE!)

This new policy won't fix EBay but... it is a definite step in the right direction. It will also stop all that "$100,000 MS70 coins for only $9.99" garbage too.

By the way, what is so "questionable" about the toning on that silver eagle above??? .... looks perfectly natural to me!

Just got a call from my account rep. Everything posted in the OP is correct. The policy does go in to effect Monday, but enforcement will be gradually phased in.

Edited to add: He emphasized that the item specifics section must be used in order to be in compliance. That's something that many coin sellers, (myself included), have never bothered with.

From a practical perspective, the way to get PCI and SEGS included is probably to convince them to offer meaningful guarantees and improve their grading. The former can be done quickly. The latter will take time.

It's hard for eBay to subjectively say, approve these and not those because on opinion. It is a lot easer for eBay to go by whether a TPG has a guarantee or not. It is also easier to go by the PNG survey.

BLECH! My rep didn't inform me of this when she called. That means additional programming changes to our inventory system are in order, so it's compatible with Turbolister and the new rules. Why, after forcing us to provide obverse and reverse slab images, are they forcing us to enter in the 'items specifics' section? They must have their reasoning, but it eludes me as to why this information must be provided. All it seems to do is pull up the population information.

Quick follow up. I just spoke again with my rep, and she said they that the item specifics section does NOT have to be used. Hopefully she's right and your guy was mistaken, Russ. I guess if they start pulling all my auctions because I didn't enter in the serial number, I'll know.

not always the case. i cracked this one and sent it in. graded exactly the same. pci does get it right sometimes, they just get more wrong than right. i agree with ebay on this one. BTW i no longer own this coin

Since the eMail sent out to sellers states "Sellers must select the appropriate grading attributes within the Sell Your Item form, including "Grading Company," "Grade" and "Serial Number" provided with that grading", my hunch is that your rep is wrong. Of course, they are going to have to update Turbo Lister to accomodate some of the new requirements.

The reasoning is to aid the buyer in weeding out junk. Item specifics is heavily used in other sections of eBay, clothing and watches for example. If eBay is successful in their implementation in coins, it allows buyers to completely eliminate any listing from the search that doesn't meet the specific criteria used. In other words, the crap slabs and overgraded junk wouldn't even show up.

Yesterdays crap slabber becomes tomorrows crap stickering company ( remember CAC ? ).

CAC will surely inspire imitators just as the first TPG's inspired all the crap slabbers. Who will become the crap stickering companies? My guess is the crap slabbing companies.

I doubt it. You don't find them on TeleTrade. I did a search on Heritage and found one foreign gold coin in a PCI holder and no SEGS out of many thousand coins.

First picture is free, second one is 15c still so E-bay just added an additional cost to each listing by requiring obv. and rev. pics. for certified coins. Small matter, this is good news. Hated seeing private graded crap in high grades with reference to PCGS price guides, is truly mis-representation when that occurs.

<< <i>Maybe ebay should do what MTV did and create www.ebay2.com for the lesser wanted stuff image >>

Like the sentiment only a little backwards... MTV2 was supposed to be the good stuff (actual video's). This in mind it would mean that eBay2 would be where the actual PCGS, NGC, ANACS coins would have to be listed.

But alas MTV2 isn't playing less and less video's so can we skip right straight to eBay3?

So how do these dunces expect people to sell large lots of slabbed coins? Lets say you're selling a single lot of 100 PCGS MS69 silver eagles or maybe it's a dutch auction. You need to scan each and every coin front and back? How do you enter 100 certification numbers? How far down will my bidder have to scroll before he gets past the 200 slab images I'm forced to have in my ad? Who has 4 hours to spend posting a single auction for 100 coins? Also, I think it's BS that you'll have to sell your PCGS coin as raw if your scanner is broken or you're too poor to buy one. Weren't slabs invented so that coins could be traded sight-unseen? Yet here we are forced to include a front and back photo.

<< <i>Weren't slabs invented so that coins could be traded sight-unseen? >>

That was one of the goals but it never happened and really can't happen today except for ultra-modern NCLT. The CAC is another attempt at creating a sight unseen market.
