I thought I had my set sold, but the buyer has backed out of the deal. He has offered to pay my fees and appologized, but that does not help me much.

I am going to list them again, but this time I am going to sell them individually to try and avoid what just happened.

I am going to start the scanning process today and list whatever I get done tonight and have them run until Sunday night.

Those 9's and that 10 are nice cards to get. You have a couple of lower pop cards that should have made you smile. The Hickey card with a pop of 1 is awsome. Congratulations!

You know, cards that have white borders that become, well, not-so-white due to age? It almost seems like PSA totally ignores it yet it does make a bit of difference in the card's eye appeal. The main reason I'm asking is that my 1984 Donruss set is otherwise pretty much NRMT/MT, but the borders are off-white on the front, yet they're snow white on the back. Is that normal for 1984 Donruss?

Hey folks, I know it's been awhile but glad to see the 84D thread continuing. Al, thanks for the tipoff........

Estil - my guess is that your set was built many, many years ago, and at least some portion of the time it was not in plastic pages. The 'not so white borders' is toning, in which oxidation is occurring on the card stock surface and is easily noticed on the white borders. You can readily see this on card edges too when a factory set has been opened and shelved a long period of time. This doesn't seem to affect PSA grading of these, as they 're probably lumped in with other, particularly older sets where this may be a normal occurrence. IMO toning really takes away from eye-appeal, even on a well centered card.

    ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,246
    Yeah, what he said! image

Any direct sunlight and/or oxidation from years in a plastic page could cause the discoloration.

Arny/Bug: nice hearing from you again. I was sure that you both would be able to answer Estil's questions.....I learned something also. My guess is that getting cards from packs are going to be the one's with the "whitest" borders then. By the way Happy Father's Day. I know it applies for Bug, if it applies for Arny and Estil than DITTO!!!

My kids are going to take me to a mall today. Might not sound like a great deal on Father's Day but there is a card show going on so I am not complaining!!!

There are a total of 6 Clancy 10s now. I just picked one up in a deal this week.

So, not as tough as before. I think that I listed the PSA 10s with low pops earlier in this thread (or another thread about '84 Donruss).

    Thanks Bill!

There are definitely three to four heavyweight contenders coming soon! Robert has been slow and steady in his pursuit of an all PSA 10 set and another couple down the list a bit. But, Brent has taken his set to the next level! He's jumping up the ranks as well.

All in all, I'm trying to stay ahead picking up 10s here and there. I'm also getting a group of cards together (low pop guys) to see if I can get to 100% and then to use some to trade for upgrades.

Here's that list from the other '84 Donruss thread...

"There are MANY with a POP of 2 or 3 that should garner decent money, but here are the cards with only 1 or no PSA 10s to date.

Dave Dravecky DK Steel, Dave Dravecky DK Steele, Larry Parrish DK Steel, Mike Schmidt DK Steele, Mike Stenhouse (# on back), Ron Darling (# on back), Greg Gagne RR, #56 Buddy Bell, #109 Neil Allen, #166 Lee Mazzilli, #177 Al Oliver, #180 Rich Dotson, #230 Doug Decinces, #237 Mike Caldwell, #238 Keith Hernandez, #271 Ned Yost, #428 Mario Soto, #437 Ernie Whitt, #441 Craig Swan, #463 Terry Francona, #464 Wayne Tolleson, #479 Lee Lacy, #482 Mike Fitzgerald, #489 Joe Nolan, #501 Jerry Koosman, #505 Mark Thurmond, #522 Tom Burgmeir, #523 Chris Speir, #537 Chris Chambliss, #547 Tug McGraw, #548 Dave Smith, #549 Len Matuszek, #555 Bill Campbell, #556 Mike Torrez, #564 Vern Ruhle, #570 Salome Barojas, #580 Bill Doran, #590 Bud Anderson, #637 Omar Moreno, #638 Charlie Hough, #645 Dave Geisel, #647 Gary Pettis, #649 Johnnie Lemaster & Checklist #6 have ONLY ONE PSA 10 each.

having everyone fighting for number 1 has taken most of the fun out of this for me....I was content with trying to complete a PSA 9 set and was making good progress but now the prices for everything is going thru the roof....oh well, guess I should stop complaining and keep plugging along....make a 10 will fall my way some day.....

Al - keep plugging away - you're almost there. Some of my most enjoyable moments in collecting 84D was buying psa 10-looking cards in 9 clothing..........perfect centering, crystal-clear white borders, mint...............while costing me a whopping $4-5 . Sure, near the end it gets difficult and a bit frustrating at times but this where the thrill is imo. You'll find the cards you need if you're patient. Hang in there!

My mantra will always be that the best value in 84D is a beautifully centered psa 9.

I have some scans to share from my last submission (June special). The singles shown I need for my registry set. Where I have duplicates, I am looking to trade (not selling yet). Maybe I should keep both 482's and go for color variations.
