Post some new Barber images - the Mega Barber Thread

Nothing new on the Barber market that has caught my eye. A few nice
halves every so often do show up but nothing I need to upgrade my
collection.

Anyone see the stunning halves that ARCO has listed on Ebay ? TCHILD2
is his Ebay handle. I have a decent bid on a stunning 97-S that was BB'd by PCGS
but its still a great looking coin. I doubt I'll be the winning bidder though.

I also see that Irv has a few of his NGC coins - as well as another 97-S in PCGS AU 55 -
up at auction as well on Ebay. My raw 97-S coin - purchased from JJ Teaparty a few years
ago - was graded AU 53 by PCGS, and looks like a shot at an upgrade to AU 55 - afterall,
the gals at JJ Teaparty said it was an AU 58 .....

I too am sorry to hear of your news and like Craig said, it may not seem so now but hopefully this forced changed will work out for the better for you. It is only fitting you should get post 500.

BTW folks, Dan Flood is too humble to post it here, but my BCCS quarterly came yesterday, showing that he has won the literary contest again this year! Small consolation I know,but still, a vote of confidence from the Barber constituency.

Don--wow, way to go on the PCGS grades...I know you're hitting cloud nine about right now!

Question for everybody: I found a PCGS XF-45 1914-P for sale but the source is looking at selling for ~$1250. According to my info this coin should probably retail for around $975...of course, the demand for mid-grade Barbers has increased and is driving the prices up. What would be a good price to offer? I need a 14-P and don't want to see it get away from me but $1250 seems awfully high. Comments?

My experience on this date has been that I sold off my PCGS AU 58 six months ago for $1600 and
a PCGS XF 45 for $1350.

Grab the PCGS 45 for $1250 if its still available and it has good eye appeal.

WHEW! I just completed my G/VG ablum of Barber Halves aside from planned upgrades for eye appeal, etc... It was more challenging than I thought it would be in these grades, especially the older dates....

Dave - I'm with 100% Mike on the 14-P.

$1250 does not sound out of line at all, unless the XF45 example is unappealing. Buy it!

PS, here's a little VF quarter I picked up from a member via the BST Board. Deep muted copper color. Not quite XF.

Dave99B...you realize of course that the 1900-S was one of the Phillippine Hoard coins and most were melted and among those that did survive many were harshly cleaned. Nice pick up !!!

Nice coins Don. PCGS has my Barbers logged in. Hope to get the dirty details in a couple of weeks.

Mainly a 94-O and I otped to try to try the regrade approach on the 97-S I picked up from Ken Larson.

I also Saw Irv put his Barbers on the PCGS site. I'm bumped to #9. Bummer. Not that I care though.

Received my grades on two coins I dropped off at Baltimore. PCGS has stated thet 94-O I dropped off as being cleaned. This is the third time with this coin and I just don't see it. I also asked for my PCGS 97-S XF40 to be regraded. It is a XF41.5. Did it on a lark. Came back appropriately as XF40. I picked up a raw 05-P however I think it will go AU50.

Saw two nice AU50/53 97-S at Baltimore. Just too nice for me.

Boy, these last three are going to take awhile.

Let's see, DaveB, 10K for one coin, ....or..... in the fall I could drive 3 hrs to Hatteras, NC and fish with a local guide all morning in the surf or inshore for trout and flounder, x 30 (thirty) separate trips, for all expenses including the guide's beer and gas.. Hmmm... close call

98-O is notoriously tough especially with that circulated cameo look.

Well Barber Fans, I'm down to my last 5to 6-weeks for my masters and am working on my thesis. Probably won't be contributing much between now and May 21st. I will get my coins into the BCCS census here shortly and will peruse the usual haunts for the three coins I need.

Data for my spreadhseet has been lagging since December. I'll keep up on it when I graduate in June.

BTW, I was tracking a few MS halves on Heritage's auction today...
seems like there were some bargains out there...quite a few went
for 20 - 25 % lower than I had pegged them for. No, didn't bid on
anything - liked the 07-D in NGC 66 - but $ or the lack thereof
kept me out of the race.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the well wishes and PM's sent regarding my recent unemployment woes.

To ease my pain, here's a recent acquisition (which I haven't received yet). It's a PCGS, XF-45, 1911-S Barber quarter. The date is a little better date, with a mintage under 1 million. See Dave.....I also love the circulated Barber quarters too.

The 11-D is truly one of the better dates. The 11-D, and the 11-S to a lesser extent, get next to no respect. The Rodney Dangerfields of Barber quarters. But just try and locate one. I can’t speak to MS examples, but I do know I searched for 7 or 8 years before I found a really nice VF20 example for my set. Clearly the 11-D isn’t in the '09-O league', but then again, not many dates are. Very cool, man…

I picked up the 11-S from RCNH. I had them shoot me a quick image before one was posted on their website.
I also have an 11-D, in VF-20, but it's raw. I don't remember where I picked up my 11-D, but I do remember the coin having a nice original look to it. And of course......the 09-O is still on my want list.

There seems no end in sight to all the great coins we're collecting...

I can attest to the fact that the 11-D & 11-S quarters are extremely difficult to locate and the examples
which were just shown are absolutely outstanding. I have yet to find an unmolested 11-D quarter in AU.
I was fortunate enough to locate a 11-S in NGC 55 from a fellow board member - Ron Hedden.
{ Of course, this was after I located an 11-S PCGS MS 64 at DLRC }

Just picked up another decent half in a personal favorite date this evening on TeleTrade:

1898-P NGC AU 55 :

Update: 4/18/07. Received this coin today, Teletrade must have had an awful lot of lighting on when they imaged this coin. Its considerably darker than the images...almost a blue tint...its still a very nice coin - although I'm sure that PCGS would grade it AU 53 if they didn't bag it for questionable color. The luster is very strong and it has a decent strike. Its destined for the Dansco album anyway. Just thought I'd share this with everyone, without posting another post to this thread.

Dan - Whoops, my eyes must be going. That is indeed an "s", not a "d". Details, details....tough quarter none the less.

Mike - That is one choice 1898 AU55 half. Right in your sweet spot. Or wait, maybe it's an XF 1901-S quarter? Whatever it is, it's great!

Guess I better get to the eye doc soon. Been over a year. He needs to make another payment on his new silver BMW anyway.
