Well........Dave gets the "crusty" Barber award for the day. I love that 05-O Barber half, and a tough date to boot.
Dogwood has a nice original 95-S, also a better date.
I'm finding myself attracted to the VF grades more and more lately. As the prices rise higher and higher on the Barber halves, the VF Barber's are looking better and better. I also like the look of a nice VF coin, plenty of grit and dirt and just enough detail too.
The 05-O is, IMHO, one of the most difficult dates to locate in the half series. Nice pick up, Dave.
Nice looking 95-S, Dogwood.
I guess I'm still a newbie, I didn't know there was a proper protocol on specific numeric postings. Is what was done a "cheat post" ? I don't think there was any malicous harm in that .
I wouldn't worry about it Fletcher. [ BTW: nice new dimes you're locating].
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I picked up the 05-O half on advice from Tyler. I saw the coin at a show in Seattle. It was raw, but it was clearly the real deal, and the dealer knew it. The dealer wanted $300, and was FIRM on his price – would not take a penny less. I passed on it initially, as I thought the price was WAY out of line.
I checked out the rest of the show, then swung by again at the end of the day, and again tried to deal with the guy. He was still not interested in negotiating. I was a bit annoyed to say the least, as most guys have some wiggle room. Not on this half dollar!
I grabbed his business card, and after discussing it with Tyler that night, I decided to call him back the next day. Luckily it was still available, so I coughed up the money. I had it graded by ANACS shortly thereafter. I LOVE that half, and I don’t regret purchasing it in the least.
Thanks Mr Child for pushing me over the top!
Dave
P.S. COOL 1895-s Dogwood!
Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
I need to post something so I thought I would share the one half in my set that got the most compliments. I can't express my appreciation enough for each of your contributions and the continuance of this thread.
PS Love Dave's 05o and Wow, a midgrade 95s! Toughie!

Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of The Complete Guide to Barber Halves? They seem to be out of print. If anyone has and extra copy, I'd be willing to buy it. Thanks to all.
A week and a half to Baltimore. I hope to find something good there.
I am also a little edgy as someone out bid me for a small size Everett, WA note and large size Washington, PA note in the Lyn Knight auction on Friday. I'll be really upset if someone offers me these notes hoping to turn a quick buck.
So I need to buy something good in Baltimore to make up for this travesty.
There is something really cool about finding a relatively common coin for a few bucks but with eye appeal that makes the find so enjoyeable. $13.00 paid, and I feel more satisfied than I have in a good while.
With all the crap that's currently out there in the upper circ grades, I'm enjoying the "totally original" lower grade Barber's more and more. Nice coins guys!

Bluelobster...yes, you already posted that great looking 1901 - BUT - from a different angle. What a nice looking coin...feel free to photograph it again with different lighting and repost the newer images !!!
I have always wondered why I didn't have images of certain coins when I knew there were images out there from different auction houses from whom I purchased the coins:
Here's the first of a few that you have not seen before: 1907-S pruchased raw from Heritage in the November, 2000 Santa Clara Auction. [ For those of you who are "Members" of Heritage, check out the vast array of truly beautiful halves that were sold raw during that auction; also, don't faint when you see the prices realized !!! ]
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Very nice half MFH, I have been looking at some Barbers on Heritage's site. I"ve never bought anything from them but one day I may pull the trigger, they seem to have some nice coins. One of the local dealers I buy from is up there looking at some halfs.
BTW does anyone think that 1901 half could go cameo ?I'm not sure, it was graded before PCGS gave some designations.
Response to tombr, re: "The Complete Guide to Barber Halves", by David Lawrence, 1991, ISBN 1-880731-05-03.
Try bookfinder.com...that's where I found my copy, brand new, for $25.00. It's been out of print for quite awhile. Amazon has one right now in the UK for $158.00--but if you're patient, you'll find one at bookfinder.com. Another suggestion is Kevin Flynn's "The Authoritative Reference on Barber Half Dollars", first edition 2005...usually available on Amazon or bookfinder. Flynn's book actually has a lot of data on all three Barbers: dimes, quarters, and halves but I like the book by Lawrence better.
To all the other Barber half collectors out there: Thanks for all the terrific posts and pictures...I'm very new to this hobby and have learned a ton just reading all the great comments...and conversing with some very courteous and extremely knowledgeable collectors...my collection is just starting but I'm really looking forward to the journey!
MFH and Barberman55--thanks for the welcome...you guys have got some really nice looking coins on display...thanks for sharing...I hope to be able to post some soon! Dave
Beeman: Nice 15-D. Just curious, what did JJ Teaparty grade that coin ?
I've bought alot of my Barbers from them over the years and they are a bit optomistic in their grading of raw coins. Don't get me wrong, they have nice material, and I enjoy working with them.
Edited:
Thanks, Beeman for letting us know what JJ Teaparty graded this coin. I knew they were a "bit optomistic" but the coin is clearly not an AU 58. I'd grade it AU 53, IMHO. Its still a very nice coin, regardless.
Always remember, grading is not a science...its an art.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Tyler: Very nice looking 07-S BeeMan: Good looking 15-D; like MFH would be interesed in what JJ Teaparty graded your coin...haven't bought from them yet but also curious about their grading
Craig and Glenn: Thanks for the welcome...and you are right Craig--these mid-grades are addictive...kind of like eating potato chips, once you've had one, you gotta have more!
Also have a question for the crowd: I have an 1892-O ANACS AU-50 and an 1893-O ANACS XF-45...the 92-O looks like it will grade out at AU-50 but for sure XF-45 (I think)...the 93-O in my opinion looks like a strong 45...will post some pics later so you can judge. My question is this: I want to cross them over to PCGS--should I crack them out and send them in raw or send them in the holders and go with a request of XF-45 minimum? Thanks. Will forward pics shortly.
Okay, here's the 1892-O...this is my first time posting pics so apologize if they are HUGE and blurry!
Here's the 1893-O...I didn't notice the tiny horizontal scratch across the cap until I took the photo--the light was really bouncing off it...
Back to my original question...I want to get these crossed over to PCGS but not sure if I should crack them out or send them in their holders. The 92-O I think will come back as an XF-45 (that's what I'm shooting for)...and I think the 93-O has a strong chance to also come back as an XF-45...any opinions out there?
Sometimes I guess there is too much of a good thing. Your images are so large that they portray two coins ruined by hairlines. Knowing how fussy ANACS can be on grading, I'm more than a bit surprised that they were not holdered in Net-Grade holders.
I'd send them into PCGS in their ANACS holders. The PCGS graders look much more favorably on ANACS graded coins, and with distain on NGC graded coins, IMHO.
Best of luck - and thanks for joining this Thread.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Boy those are some close ups Dave. I'd send them in the ANACS holders and ask them to cross at any grade. You are developing a good eye for XF45 material.
<< <i>Beeman: Nice 15-D. Just curious, what did JJ Teaparty grade that coin ?

dogwood, Mike, Craig, thanks for the sage advice and comments...you're right the closeups and lighting I used really highlights some of the imperfections that are generally not visible on first glance. i.e. I didn't notice the small scratch on the 1893-O until I took the photo--the light source was positioned at the top of the holder so the light reflected off that particular spot. I will give it a shot and send them in soon in their holders...fingers crossed! Thanks again! Dave
Just got this one 15 minutes ago. I know it's been cleaned but the price was right! I think this will be my last buy for a while. Been working on my Barbers for nearly two years. Forgot to say, that's the Micro O half. Just thought I'd make sure you knew. JT

Craig - There's got to be an XF 45 out there - somewhere - but if you locate one be prepared to pay $18,500 to $21,500 for one in XF 45. Amazing how a little too heavy a hand can cost so much !
Nice looking Micro O regardless, JT.
I think my Micro O is somewhere buried in this Thread. So is Peter Shireman's... check them out...or go onto the Registry for Barber Halves With Varieties.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Wow on the micro O. I will have to check Mike Flanagan's census study on micro O 's and see if this one was mentioned.
Very few exist from F to XF and I know of a few that have been in holders. This new one has obvious cleaning and would never be put into PCGS or NGC. Older ANACS would have certified it as genuine, but mark down from the technical grade to the net grade.
The finest micro-O half is the Eliasberg coin in PCGS MS 68 and currently in Dale Friend's registry set and imaged. My estimation is that it is worth in excess of $140K. The second finest is certified as PCGS MS 67 and is from the Queller collection auctioned by Stack's, but I don't know it's current whereabouts. The thrid finest in my opinion is the PCGS MS 65 in Steve Duckor's collection. There is an NGC 65 coin that was sold in the Hugon sale that I don't like as well as the Duckor coin. There are three PCGS MS 63 coins including mine and one in George Szatkowski's registry set. Not sure where the other is.
Sorry for carrying on so, but I do LOVE the micro O half. If I could just find one from 1898-O I'd really love it.
Thanks for the info JT and DR. Pete. I'd take a second out on the house for a PCGS XF45 Micro O in a heartbeat. The whole rarer then hen's teeth thing.
