What Did NGC Grade This 1807 Capped Bust Half **NGC Grade Posted In Thread**

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
What you think NGC graded this 1807 CBH Large stars 0-114? There is a fair amount of luster present. I got this one a while back.
image

And for those that are disappointed and wanted to see the "stman scan" since I needed to have a copy of the slab for my files.
Here ya go, sorry just the obverse. Basically what it looks like straight on. I just put it flat on the scanner glass.

That's a nice looking 07. I imagine there is a lot of surface flattness that is standard for the early busts, but it looks as though there may be some wear at that same level as well.

    I'd give it a 45 or a 50.

I really like 07, 08/07 and 08 for the bust series.

Hopefully, they gave you the AU grade it looks to deserve. I suspect, however, that they thumped you over the weak center of the obverse and gave it a grade in the VF 30 to XF 40 range.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I'll give it props for clean fields, but the color changes on the relief makes me think 50. I'd have to take a huge pic of it to really get a good look at it.

Hey stman, I love that coin. That coin is a 50-53 coin for sure. Not much rub on her at all and a much better than usual strike for an 07, those stars are great, clasp looks good and the left wing ain't too bad either. I sure as heck hope they didn't 45 you on this one.
    Nice coin.

I'd grade it 40 from your image, because the luster appears to stop at the inner star points, but that wasn't the question. You and I have talked privately about NGC's grading, so you understand that trying to outguess NGC makes me nervous. I'd guess they called it 50.

Anywhere from AU50 to 58 depending on the luster I can not see in image. Nice example for 1807 BTW--image

The answer is........ grade doesn't matter on a coin such as this. Gotta wait for another member as he gets upset when results are posted too soon.

I'm not anti-NGC like many of the members here. But how on earth can NGC think that coin is MS63? I know the strike on these can be very weak. However, anyone can see the wear on Liberty's cheek.

I think I see 5 points of wear and 2 points of original dirt, so I'll guess AU53. Can't see it lower than 50 or higher than 58.

Nice coin, truly wonderful scan image

I guess I should have put a image in that previous post, sorry. Actually, this one has a nice strike, especially for an 07.

I'd say it's a nice EF48 image (or Choice EF/AU from the old days) ... NGC probably graded it higher ... 53 or 55

Thanks for the opinions folks. And I must say they are exactly as I had expected. As many of us have mentioned in the past, this first subtype of the series 07-08 can be very tough to grade. Gotta go with luster. With this wear pattern it could be anywhere from XF through AU IMO. Luster does indeed entice the fields, but not heavy.

And since I'm not one to give my coins extra points for ownership...... I feel it's a strong XF but grade is not important to me.
I just thought this could be interesting, and perhaps helpful to some. Good luck trying to find one
like this for anywhere near XF money though. Had this been in an AU holder I probably couldn't have purchased it. This is a much tougher coin than the O-112 50/inverted 5 variety. If I were to sell this to a knowledgeable
collector of the series someday, I'd probably crack it out and say I grade it X amount of dollars, grade it what ya want.

OK, I'll shut up and since we all know NGC over grades every single coin by all the blanket statements we see in this thread and all the time on this board........ image

The coin shown in the NGC holder looks to be much darker than shown by the pictures provided at the start of the thread. Perhaps NGC deducted points for being such dark toning.

Sorry, wrong. If you had read what I wrote at the beginning, I scanned it and put it flat on the scanner. Is it impossible for you to accept that
NGC does get it right sometimes? image There is nothing too dark about the coin, and there is no reason whatsoever they netted it down.

If NGC only graded that coin a 40, PCGS will HAVE to grade the coin vf/30, no? imageimageimage

I love those grade predictions that automatically have PCGS grading a coin at least 5 points lower.

    Love this place. image

Nice coin by the way and I assume the luster is shot and that's why it only graded 40? Looks better, detail wise anyways, for the date.

Yes, but as you are aware I highly doubt it would sell for anywhere near 40 price. These go for multiples of sheet price. So no, I didn't "rip" it.image
As I mentioned earlier though.... had this been in an AU holder I wouldn't have been able to purchase it. Not an O-114 anyway.
