    Very nice specimen of this hard to find date in Gem. If it has more luster than the image shows, and no small hits on face, and full corn ear(can't tell from image),

    then a pq 65. Probably not a 66 without more luster than shows.

    Wow, I guess I am too tuff on this series.

    My guesstimate was MS64.

    Dale knows this series. You need better than average luster to get one of these in a 6 holder. They'll allow a soft star or two, a lt. corn which isn't fully defined (or even flat, sometimes) and a minor hit on the V on the reverse or on Miss Liberty's face. For some reason, PCGS has been tougher on type in 6 than on most scarce dates I've seen, such as this one.

    Very nice MS65 and you also have a nice bonus!!! That is a nice cud between the "T" and "E" on the rev in "United"!!!!!!!!

    Also, take a look on the rev to the right of the "V" about k4.....is that a break,cud or what ????

    The only thing I don't like is what is going on at @ K3? Is that the holder or the rim?

    That's a die break, which has no effect on the grade unless you were looking for MS-70 or maybe 69.

    The looks like a solid MS-65. It could be a 66, but it looks a bit dull for grade in the photo. If it's got decent luster at all, it is an MS-66.

    65 or 66, except for that thing between T and E on the reverse, I'm not sure what that is, but I think it's going to drop the grade by a couple points.

    63 or 64.

    Thanks for the opinions. Believe it or not, this is actually in a PCGS MS-63 holder. I bought it raw and had it slabbed last year and was surprised when it came back 63. I was thinking of sending it in for a regrade for this quarter's freebie submission, but I wanted to see what other people thought first.

    If you'll sell that coin to me as an MS-63 because of the thing (die chip) between those two letters as an MS-63, I'm a ready buyer. That thing makes makes no difference in the grade.

    HINT: It is raised and is therefore mint-caused.

    Sorry -- I'm certainly not selling this as an MS-63. Yeah, the thing between the T and E is definitely raised and looks like a die chip to me.

    The only reason I can think of that they zapped you with an MS-63 is the color, which might be TOO subdued. I don't see any big marks or spots. From the picture there is not a doubt in my mind that the coin is an MS-64, but going from 63 to 64 does not get you very far financially. It would have to make 65 to make it worthwhile UNLESS you got a free grade coming, and don't have a need for it elsewhere.

    This coin would have to incredibly ugly for it to be in a 3 holder. Add to this the fact that all of the scarce date Unc. Liberty Nickels I've seen in MS 66 were overgraded, with one exception. That's right, the TPGs were much tougher on say, the 1903 in 6 than they were on the 1893, 1891, etc.

    Most MS 64s I've seen have problems that jump out at me; I don't need a glass to see them. I'd send it in for a regrade. If you want 'insurance,' first take it to someone who knows the series at a major show.

    I'll give you greysheet ask plus 10% sight unseen for this coin in MS 63. Bill Jones and I are on the same page.
    Lastly, PCGS makes mistakes. I sent a raw Walker to them, came back in a 5 holder. A year later, I had seen a number of 5s & mine looked better. I sent it back & it upgraded.

    Well, I sent it in for a regrade (quaterly freebie), and it still came back MS-63. image Guess I'll have to be content with a PQ 63 for now. Looking at it compared to my other 64's, it doesn't have as much luster which must be why PCGS doesn't like it as a 64. Though as everyone noted, it does have very nice mark-free surfaces and a good strike for the date. Oh well. Here's another picture I took today when I got the coin back:

    Nice coin, I have a No-Cents in 61 and yours shoulda' gone better than 63.

    Perfect example of why not to rely on the TPG's assessment exclusively. I love it as a 63, and would gladly buy it as a 64 (and then crack it out and put it in a Dansco anyway! image )

    Too many hits on the cheek to be higher than a 63. Somewhat soft strike in the hair details too. Nice coin either way. imagematteproof

    Yeah, it's a bummer it didn't upgrade. I do really like the coin so I'll probably keep it, but it's a shame because all the rest of my liberty nickels (save one) are MS-64. Someday when I go to a larger show, I'll try to show the coin around and get some in-hand opinions...
