Your favorite type coin

All dates, mint marks, rarities, value and varieties aside, what is the coin you most admire?

Me, I really like two-cent pieces. I love all the detail they have. They have a decent size to them, and I like the antiquity and history of them.

Can't answer just one. Capped bust (large) quarters. Reeded edge halves. Classic head large cents (talk about 'thrill of the hunt!').

Least fav -- Trade Dollar, hands down. Hideous coin.

I really like the Texas Commem. I know in the classic sense, this isn't a type coin.

    Type... Hmm? Standing Liberty Quarters!

Any type of coin is a type coin. My preference would be either Seated Liberty Half Dollar or Indian Cent.

I have to say the Chain Cent followed by the 1796 quarter. Both were major milestones in the history of the U.S. Mint and its coinage.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Not as it is generally defined. Check the "type coin" section of any major dealer web site and see if you find Walkers, or Peace Dollars, or IHCs in there. These are considered by most to be series coins.

    And Raw ones at that

I think he meant to say type OF coin. IN a way, russ and tjkillian are both right.

    anyway, I say peace dollar.

If sticking to Russ's definition.......Gobrecht Dollars. (unless those are patterns) in which case I say Draped bust dollars.

    Hands down . . . double dimes.

Bust halves are also pretty cool.

Don't really know. It all depends on which one I am looking at in my collection at the time. I don't want to insult any of my coins by saying one or another is a favorite. They may get mad at me.

A tough question, even though I've been working on a type set for most of 20 years. 20 cent, 3 cent and 2 cent coins are the ones that freak out the non-collectors who see my set. I've always considered the Barber Half the litmus test of a good 20th century type set (and still need a better one). No problem Seated Liberty Dollars are always tough ones for someone completing a matched Dansco 7070 type set .within th upper boundaries of the collector's budget

My favorite type coin that I have owned was a 1795 Flowing Hair half dollar in VG-10 with a plachet that was thin under the date.image

My favorite type coin currently in my type set is an 1837 Reeded Edge half dollar.
