that's really a keelboat, not a canoe.
barracuda, that design is taken from the Peace Medal's reverse. i'm uncertain if it was first used by Jefferson, but i believe it was, and then it was issued by succeeding presidents with their bust on the obvers. the big difference is the spirit in which it was given.

And as rich as you are,
it's much better by far,
to be young at heart!
i doubt that the signing was a glum occasion. perhaps the money was used to finance the French fleet. the major reason the French agreed to sell the land to the Americans was to prevent the British from gaining a further stronghold in the New World by both limiting British expansion and strenghtening the French relationship with their American ally.

We can and should do much better.
Shaking Hands Design: Text at top too large & dominating. Take up more of the field with the hands.
Boat Design: For a coin as small as a nickel, the boat has way too much detail and is too small. Again, make it bigger to take up more of the field.

Edited to Add: I didn't notice JBStevens thread where several people beat me to the punch. Damn this day job, it keeps me from adding my 2 cents.

The boat looks like a Roman barge.
Both designs suck.

I don't buy that, take a look at the Canadian 10¢ coin, smuch smaller than a nickel but the schooner design is detailed and works well.
First POTD 9/19/05!!
1. The Canadian sailboat design is about shapes, not lines.
2. It looks good small because it's an arrangement of big shapes, and the few lines used are clean and relatively straight.
3. Buildings depicted with lines are ok too on small coins because buildings are rectilinear: the lines don't visually tangle like spaghetti. Plus, we already know what buildings look like....you can use as little as a square with a triangle on top, and the viewer can envision a house.
4. The new Nickel boat design is a chicken soup of overlapping lines; we're not sure what the damn thing is supposed to look like because we don't encounter keelboats everyday on the way to work.
5. The Viking dollar is a lot bigger than a nickel, and look at the relative lack of detail on the people. The figures on Lewis & Clark Nickel will be little pimples.
6. Why did Lewis & Clark have to use such a sissy boat?
7. The heck with historical accuracy...let's use that cool Viking boat instead!
I agree with an earlier post saying that we already have a commemorative coin program. That is where this stuff belongs. As for a
circulating nickel, I think the Jefferson/Monticello design has run its course, should be retired, & something totally new should be designed.
AND another thing- The boat looks like the rubber raft they put on the Missouri Quarter, only with a sail & canopy.
I don't like the one with the Golf clubs

A closer look at hte Canadian dime. Like the Canadian 1, 5, and 25¢ coin the design has been the same since 1937 and is due for a redesign itself. Granted, before 1935-1937 Canada had some of the most boring looking coins in the world at the time (in my opinion).
The design for the 10¢ coin was originally slated to be on the 25¢ but works well on a small scale. As previously mentioned it's a lot of big shapes as opposed to lines.
US coins also have to deal with more words: United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, Liberty, Date, Denomination... and the caption for the commemoration on top of that.
There's a lot to be said about the KISS rule. Keep It Simple, Stupid.
