    hey Gq

    that's really a keelboat, not a canoe.

barracuda, that design is taken from the Peace Medal's reverse. i'm uncertain if it was first used by Jefferson, but i believe it was, and then it was issued by succeeding presidents with their bust on the obvers. the big difference is the spirit in which it was given.

I am ready for a change in design, but these are not very attractive, IMO.

Anything w/o full steps is fine with me lol!!!!

Of the two, I agree with most that the keelboat is better....but not much of a choice! My suggestion would be a scene of Napoleon glumly signing over the territory so he could keep financing his fleet! (with Jefferson in the background smiling slyly, and rubbing his hands together - kinda like Rumsfield "advising" G-Dub).

    hey Dustin

i doubt that the signing was a glum occasion. perhaps the money was used to finance the French fleet. the major reason the French agreed to sell the land to the Americans was to prevent the British from gaining a further stronghold in the New World by both limiting British expansion and strenghtening the French relationship with their American ally.

image I like them. The first is the reverse used on the medals Jefferson issed to Lewis and Clark to hand out to the native americans they came in contact with. I think it's a great way to commemorate one of the greatest quests of discovery in our Nation's history. The next would be to eliminate the $1 bill and circulate the Sac exclusively.

Both of them beat the "trolly car" reverse that had been on the Jefferson nickel for the last 65 years. I vote thumbs up. image

    My five cents worth:

We can and should do much better.

Shaking Hands Design: Text at top too large & dominating. Take up more of the field with the hands.

Boat Design: For a coin as small as a nickel, the boat has way too much detail and is too small. Again, make it bigger to take up more of the field.

Just wait for the designations - FF = Full fingers, FFN = Full Fingernails, FP = Full Pole, FK = Full Keelboat, FSL + Full Sail Lines

Edited to Add: I didn't notice JBStevens thread where several people beat me to the punch. Damn this day job, it keeps me from adding my 2 cents.

Leave the Indian Peace Medal design where it belongs--on Indian Peace Medals. Both designs stink, are too busy for a small coin and typify the recent out put of the US Mint--pure crap in terms of design. (Next time I'll tell you how I really feel)

Is it me or does the handshake look like two people wearing Civil War outfits?
The boat looks like a Roman barge.

    Both designs suck.

Both designs are bland and unoriginal. They have the look of Franklin Mint products from the mid-1970's.

So-so. I agree with several other people, in that ANY change is a GOOD thing! The nickel design has been around for 60+ years. It is starting to get boring.

Change is good, BUT ,,, the handshake doesn't do it and the boat (any boat always makes people feel all fuzzy inside) needs a little more kick to it.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    I don't really like it.

I don't buy that, take a look at the Canadian 10¢ coin, smuch smaller than a nickel but the schooner design is detailed and works well.

They're okay, but I think the CCAC (or what ever they are these days) are full of cr a p for not changing the obverse to the image of Jeff that looks like the 1 dollar commem.

Perhaps, I am uninformed. Are these the ACTUAL reverses for the new nickel? If so, both are horrifically uninspired. A big image from me.

An image for your consideration. Some observations below.
    image

    1. The Canadian sailboat design is about shapes, not lines.

    2. It looks good small because it's an arrangement of big shapes, and the few lines used are clean and relatively straight.

    3. Buildings depicted with lines are ok too on small coins because buildings are rectilinear: the lines don't visually tangle like spaghetti. Plus, we already know what buildings look like....you can use as little as a square with a triangle on top, and the viewer can envision a house.

    4. The new Nickel boat design is a chicken soup of overlapping lines; we're not sure what the damn thing is supposed to look like because we don't encounter keelboats everyday on the way to work.

    5. The Viking dollar is a lot bigger than a nickel, and look at the relative lack of detail on the people. The figures on Lewis & Clark Nickel will be little pimples.

    6. Why did Lewis & Clark have to use such a sissy boat? image

    7. The heck with historical accuracy...let's use that cool Viking boat instead! image

I agree with an earlier post saying that we already have a commemorative coin program. That is where this stuff belongs. As for a
circulating nickel, I think the Jefferson/Monticello design has run its course, should be retired, & something totally new should be designed.

AND another thing- The boat looks like the rubber raft they put on the Missouri Quarter, only with a sail & canopy.

A closer look at hte Canadian dime. Like the Canadian 1, 5, and 25¢ coin the design has been the same since 1937 and is due for a redesign itself. Granted, before 1935-1937 Canada had some of the most boring looking coins in the world at the time (in my opinion).

The design for the 10¢ coin was originally slated to be on the 25¢ but works well on a small scale. As previously mentioned it's a lot of big shapes as opposed to lines.

US coins also have to deal with more words: United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, Liberty, Date, Denomination... and the caption for the commemoration on top of that.

There's a lot to be said about the KISS rule. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Any change right now is a big improvement. I think the designs are okay (yes they could be better); however, just the simple fact we have a modification in our coins in which are way over due for new design make me happy as a Lark!
