What is the black spot on reverse from ?

A carbon speck (often called a "flyspeck" or "copper spot") is a tiny, dark, or black concentration of corrosion that forms on the surface of copper and bronze coins.

    What Causes Them:

    • Organic Debris: They usually start when microscopic particles of organic matter—such as paper dust from coin albums, cardboard holders, or human saliva/finger oils from talking or handling—land on the coin.
    • Chemical Reaction: Atmospheric oxygen, humidity, and trace elements react with the trapped particle, creating a small mound of corrosion. (Note: Numismatists often debate the exact chemistry, noting that many spots are actually a form of sulfatization or copper sulfide/tarnish rather than pure carbon).

    I hope this answer helps.

I'll say Unc. as I tend to be an optimist on these, could be high grade due to originality.

I'm also going to say AU55. Nice from a detail standpoint but doesn't appear to have much luster left and in addition to the reverse spot there are two additional spots on the nose and T on the face which will prevent it from getting a bean. JMHO

The dark spots are minor and don't detract from this coin's appeal. Should get a bean imo. It would be the centerpiece of my early Lincoln collection. I mean, L@@k at that wheat!

Some great eyes in the group.
    AU55 BN was the result.
I had originally sent to NGC who slabbed as AU details cleaned but there was zero evidence of cleaning in my or several others opinions. I haven't really considered it for CAC but guess I could toss it in if I send some others at some point.

My first thought was 53 or 55, depending on how that carbon spot looked in person. I think PCGS is more forgiving about those on circulated copper versus uncirculated. It's a beauty, congrats on the grade.

I think it is a 58 that was kicked down for luster and the spots to 55.

My personal grade would be XF45 due to the spots and I do not see any luster evident in the TV photo, I fully expect that PCGS graded it AU50 or higher.

It’s likely from the same cause as the ones on the obverse, that you didn’t ask about.

I read the thread first so I know the grade now. My opinion based upon wear is an AU58 because it "feels" like an AU58 even though I don't see obvious wear patterns throughout. I think it also has better luster than some folks are giving it credit for having, but i isn't a luster bomb. I really like the overall eye appeal, but the spots really do pull the coin down. My guess is that the spots are enough of a distraction that CAC would not give this a sticker, but if it were my coin I would submit it if I had coins going in.

I still really like the coin.

I am a fan of bold strikes. I don't believe that the exceptionally bold wheat lines seen on this '14-D are fake. This coin is mint state. I said it once, I'll say it again: MS 62 BN. Deserving of a green bean.

Tough one. I think it's a just miss on the Unc, so I'll say AU58. Something about the overall look and "fabric". It has a nice natural look to it.
