I am very happy to have landed this one; it is the second highest graded example on the pop report of a tough one (9 total graded).

    Very cool piece.

    The choice of Monte Irvin rather than Willie Mays makes me wonder if this dates to early 1951, before Mays joined the Giants in late May.

    A little later, the classic New York “big three” would almost certainly have been Mantle, Mays and Snider— which makes Irvin's presence here especially interesting.

    Hi David - I gave my hypothesis on your thread about lobby cards.

    After further thought and checking: as known - Mays was ROY in '51.

    Just a guess on my part, but Irvin instead of Mays may help date this piece. Mays had a strong rookie year in 1951, but then entered military service in May 1952 and missed all of 1953.

    During that period, Irvin was still the established Giants star, so choosing him alongside Mantle and Snider would make sense. Once Mays returned and exploded in 1954, I'd think he'd be the more obvious choice. Just a hypothesis.

    Or simply put? This photo came out in early 1951 before Mays would be considered for that spot?

    Very nice! I thought the player photos looked familiar: The photos are all from the 1969-70 Topps set but with different background colors. The exception is Pistol Pete - that image is from the 1971-72 Topps set.

    @1951WheatiesPremium awesome cups! Never seen these before. I see a John McEnroe in there too. He won his first of 7 Grand Slam titles at the 1979 US Open (around the time of these 1979-80 cups).

    Those cups are amazing and I remember those. Always weird that Kingman was the baseball guy.

    So I’m 1979 it launched with Bird, Magic, Haden, Maloney, Henderson and Campbell.

    The lineup adds stars like Dorsett, Kingman, McEnroe in 1980, and later guys like Mike Schmidt and George Brett; the lineup of athletes changes a little bit each year while stretching into the mid 1980’s.

    I'm gonna guess - Kingman who has 442 lifetime HR's - in '79 hit 48 HR's and had an OPS almost at 1.000; .288 BA but also had 131 SO's. 😵‍💫

    For real. DK was way before his time with all the power and all the Ks. He had a pretty great career while being on some historically horrible teams. Rumor was he was not a pleasant guy to have on your team though.

    Really nice cards!

    Had a flashback - Lemon took over the Yanks twice and took them to the WS both times - won in '78 and lost in '81; I was in school in NYC when Billy Martin got canned and Lemon had a great comeback - ending the season with a 1 game playoff with Boston where Bucky F'in Dent hit a homer to win the playoff. Of course Reggie predicted they would win it all! 🤩

    Parker was the coolest dude around. Just a shame it took so long to get him in the HoF. Shameful.

    That 74 may be my favorite photo on any card of his and he had some great images.

    Just got this Mickey Mantle scrapbook. Don't know exactly what I've got, but I love it. 49 pages and hundreds of pictures of Mantle and Mantle collectibles. Must have taken hours to put this all together. I think this came from Sports Collectors Digest from around 2009 or 2010.



    Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

    Awesome idea. I did the same over the last few years. Focusing on Limited run Tiffany, Glossy, etc sets from the 80’s. I see you got a glossy yourself. I picked up his Score glossy card.

    I really like the Fleer Glossy cards, and as ugly as 88 looks, Ive grown to kinda love it. Ive been looking for a glossy Edgar Martinez in a 10 for a while now. Cheers!
