I like that this series offers one of the more affordable 19th century proofs, and in an odd denomination, too.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?7 -
OK, today is Sunday, February 1st (Eastern, Central and Mountain time, as of now). As noted above, @lordmarcovan asked me to fill in for him “turning the page” when it appears he may be absent.
The next coin in the PCGS Dansco 7070 Registry Set is the Capped Bust HALF Dime, dated from 1829 - 1837 (1837 also has the beginning of the Seated Liberty Half Dime, but that won’t count for today.)
Here’s a little tidbit. This coin was designed by Chief Engraver William Kneass (I erroneously thought that was pronounced “knee-ass”, but I read that it should be pronounced “niece”). As a kid, we always poked fun, so I know exactly what I would have called him, lol. We would have also made fun of his wife’s maiden name - Mary Honeyman.
Back to business. My mentor, @EastonCollection, talked me into starting a set of these “teeny-weeny” coins last year. Here are two of mine from this set.
Each of these two were upgraded with a plus from MS66 at PCGS via Reconsideration. The eye appeal of the two are as different as day and night - one with super attractive toning (in my opinion), and the other highly lustrous, almost blast white (I bought this latter coin from the Heritage sale of Bruce Sherman, owner of the Miami Marlins). Most “knowledgeable” collectors probably prefer the 1829. However, there’s a large minority of collectors who prefer the eye appeal of the 1830, even on old 19th century silver. I know this from spirited bidding! Interestingly, these two coins were upgraded in the SAME Reconsideration submission, meaning the same grader and finalizer approved the pluses, despite the difference in eye appeal!

@winesteven - I was under the weather last night, so thank you for “turning the page” to our next type.
I currently lack a problem-free Capped Bust half dime, though I do have a “holey” example in my corkboard collection. I’ll fetch some pics of the holey and one of my better past coins later.
I think the best problem-free example of this type that I’ve owned in the past was only in the Choice VF range.

@winesteven - Congrats on the upgrades and these 2 examples are gorgeous. As you know, the Capped Bust Half dimes series are not a very long set for a date set. When you think about the price of a great eye appealing example makes this set quite doable. The only one toughie is the 1837 small 5 variety. That requires some patience. Great job and stay the course. Best

Here is the only Capped Bust half dime I presently own, aside from an 1829 in my detecting finds album, which is also holed. (Yes, I did dig one once!)

While I would obviously never personally put a hole in any coin, I personally like lot of the 19th century (and earlier) holed stuff. @lordmarcovan that’s got a lot of great detail left and the surfaces look to be right up my alley as well.

This PCGS F12 Is the only problem-free example I’ve had in the last several years. But I sold it.
My best of all time was, as mentioned, likely no better than VF30-35, I reckon.

I personally would never put a hole in an old coin, either, but the ones that got holed 150-200 years ago can be a fun form of “budget” collecting. One looks for the same things one would in a mainstream collection: high grade (details), and eye appeal… except for the hole.
(I don’t let cleaning bother me on a holed coin either, because by that point, who cares, right? It’s already “ruined” by most people’s standards.)

The coin is slightly darker in hand and the photos are not in sharp focus but the only photos I currently have.

The 1829 Capped Bust half dime I dug while detecting an old churchyard in North Carolina is low grade and holed. I don't have any pictures of it handy, but it's not much to look at anyway. Still, it was exciting because it is the only Capped Bust coin of any denomination that I ever dug.
But if you want live action of my local detecting buddy and mentor Steve Smith (who used to go by @millennium on this site) popping an AU-details 1831 at one of my favorite hunting spots, go to about 4:45 in this video.

It is time for our next type: the Liberty Seated Half Dime Drapery (1837-59).
While I’ve owned some decent examples of this type in the past, I currently do not have one except in my “Holey” collection. And I can’t find any pics of my past highlights. So that just leaves me with the holey.
Look, somebody shot poor Lady Liberty in the head with a cannon!

I look forward to us getting into some types that I actually own a decent example of. For a lot of the types we've been covering lately, I've had to fall back on the holey collection since there are so many gaps in the type lineup of my primary (slabbed) collection.
My primary slabbed set, while never complete, used to have a much wider variety of types. I sacrificed a lot of pieces and abandoned the idea of "completeness" when I was working on getting the gold. Now that I've got all the gold, I hope to slowly go back and focus on the minor denominations again. (For instance, I don't even have a Flying Eagle cent, fer cryin' out loud! I've gotta fix that.)

This type covers three minor types.
No Drapery
With Drapery. This coin is a Proof which makes it a bit unusual. I'd love to assemble and 1858 Proof set, which was the first year the mint really got serious about issuing full sets. BUT that is super hard.
And for those who like white coins, an 1854 With Arrows.

Good morning, and welcome to February 3rd.
Today our type will be the Liberty Seated Half Dime Arrows (1853-55).
Again, I lack a problem-free example of this type in my current collection, so I'm falling back on my "holey" type set.
Since we have @winesteven to post the top-tier stuff, somebody has to post the bottom end, right?
Here goes. Hide your eyes if you're frightened of problem coins!
Not only does my holey collection have scary stuff, it also has crappy photographs. You can tell the stuff I shot with my phone. Maybe one day I will get decent photos of all the holeys, because... umm...
... just because. We know everybody wants to look at 'em, right? LOL
OK, enough of that.
Here at least is an acceptable example of the type that I used to own. Nothing earthshaking, but decent enough.
