Though 50 is the technical winning guess, this is a coin that I bought as a knowingly overgraded coin. I'd say that guesses of either 40 or 45 are actually "correct" , and I'm pretty this coin would sticker as an XF. It simply doesn't have enough obverse luster to be a true AU. If you wanted to be strictly technical, 40 would work, but I think the coin deserves a bump to 45 for being problem free and original without any significant appeal distractions or planchet problems. The production quality of these coins is so woefully poor, I've found that a decent way to graded these is to grade it as if it were a regular US issue coin, and then add two whole grades. IE 35 -> 45 , 53 -> 58, 60 -> 62. When you look at all of the APRs, you'll see what I mean.
@Rc5280 - The example last night was pretty appealing for a no grade, and I wouldn't be completely shocked to see it in an NGC holder as a 35/40 down the road. It has the details of a Choice XF, but I would imagine it would be netted somewhat for the clean surfaces and the hairlines. I never got to see it in hand, and I think it might have a small repair at 12:00, but overall It's really not all that bad for what's out there, and a problem free coin with the same details would cost 3x as much. I was expecting somewhere between 35-40, and I was planning to throw a dart at it if it stayed in that range, but 46k seemed like "all the money" to me, and I think the fact that it lacked a details reason and just said "Genuine" actually bolsters the desirability. Thin pool of buyers for details coin buyers at near 50k levels, and I'd have trouble cracking that one out. Regardless, the issue is exceedingly rare and most are tucked away for the long haul, so congrats to the new owner on securing one of the most high demand and elusive issues in pioneer.
